Flocks of starlings exhibit a remarkable ability to maintain cohesion as a group in highly uncertain environments and with limited, noisy information. Recent work demonstrated that individual starlings within large flocks respond to a fixed number of nearest neighbors, but until now it was not understood why this number is seven. We analyze robustness to uncertainty of consensus in empirical data from multiple starling flocks and show that the flock interaction networks with six or seven neighbors optimize the trade-off between group cohesion and individual effort. We can distinguish these numbers of neighbors from fewer or greater numbers using our systems-theoretic approach to measuring robustness of interaction networks as a function of the network structure, i.e., who is sensing whom. The metric quantifies the disagreement within the network due to disturbances and noise during consensus behavior and can be evaluated over a parameterized family of hypothesized sensing strategies (here the parameter is number of neighbors). We use this approach to further show that for the range of flocks studied the optimal number of neighbors does not depend on the number of birds within a flock; rather, it depends on the shape, notably the thickness, of the flock. The results suggest that robustness to uncertainty may have been a factor in the evolution of flocking for starlings. More generally, our results elucidate the role of the interaction network on uncertainty management in collective behavior, and motivate the application of our approach to other biological networks.  相似文献

Amines, diamines and polyamines inhibit the erythropoietin-stimulated incorporation of 59Fe into newly-synthesized heme by fetal mouse liver cells in short-term culture. As assessed by cellular retention of lactic dehydrogenase, most of these compounds affect the viability of the cells very little at concentrations that substantially inhibit heme synthesis. In the families of amines tested, compounds of chain length greater than five carbons are more effective inhibitors the longer the chain, and monoamines are more inhibitory than diamines. The naturally-occurring polyamines spermine and spermidine are among the most potent amine inhibitors tested.  相似文献

1. 1. The objective of this paper is to investigate the indoor environment from the viewpoint of interaction between physical environment and the human responses. The field survey has been conducted over 1 year.

ColEl DNA replication is initiated by RNA II and inhibited by RNA I. Control of the replication occurs through the interaction between RNA I and RNA II. Therefore, RNases involved in the metabolism of RNA I and RNA II are expected to play a key role in the control of the ColEl plasmid replication. A 41-kilodalton macrophage capping protein (MCP) has been isolated which is capable of forming complexes with actin monomers in addition to capping the barbed ends of actin filaments (Southwick & DiNubile, 1986). The protein is calcium activated in a fully reversible manner. Using kinetic assays, we determined a capping constant, defined here as a modified Kd, of 1 nM and a Kd of 3-4 microM for MCP-actin monomer complex formation. MCP weakly nucleates actin polymerization: more than 0.5 microM MCP is necessary to shorten the lag period, and 1 microM MCP at an actin/MCP ratio of 10 reduces the average length of actin filaments to about 200 molecules per filament. We determined that the actin nucleus that survives MCP inactivation contains a minimum number of five actin molecules. These experiments also make a point with respect to the interpretation of the prolongation of the lag period. We directly demonstrate that in the presence of an actin binding protein a prolongation of the lag period can be associated with increased nucleation, contrary to the usual interpretation in the literature that it indicates no or decreased nucleation by the actin binding protein.  相似文献

The potassium-stimulated, calcium-dependent release of endogenous GABA and glutamic acid was suppressed by pentobarbital. The ouabain and veratridinestimulated fluxes of the amino acids, calcium-independent processes, were not suppressed by pentobarbital. Release of GABA and glutamic acid was not suppressed by pentobarbital in the presence of the calcium ionophore A23187. Of eight barbiturates studied at equimolar concentrations six were found to inhibit GABA release. Thiopental was the most potent, and phenobarbital and secobarbital were inactive.  相似文献
