Sexual conflict is a pervasive evolutionary force that can reduce female fitness. Experimental evolution studies in the laboratory might overestimate the importance of sexual conflict because the ecological conditions in such settings typically include only a single species. Here, we experimentally manipulated conspecific male density (high or low) and species composition (sympatric or allopatric) to investigate how ecological conditions affect female survival in a sexually dimorphic insect, the banded demoiselle (Calopteryx splendens). Female survival was strongly influenced by an interaction between male density and species composition. Specifically, at low conspecific male density, female survival increased in the presence of heterospecific males (C. virgo). Behavioral mating experiments showed that interspecific interference competition reduced conspecific male mating success with large females. These findings suggest that reproductive interference competition between con‐ and heterospecific males might indirectly facilitate female survival by reducing mating harassment from conspecific males. Hence, interspecific competitors can show contrasting effects on the two sexes thereby influencing sexual conflict dynamics. Our results call for incorporation of more ecological realism in sexual conflict research, particularly how local community context and reproductive interference competition between heterospecific males can affect female fitness. 相似文献

Summary Five new genetically determined Gc variants were observed by isoelectric focusing. Seven rare variants 1A4, 1C1, 1C3, 1C9, 1C11, 2A2, and 2A5 were also found in the material comprising Danish ans Swedish paternity cases. All the variants were further analysed by electrophoresis in agarose gel. Two of the new variants had double bands of which the anodal one was susceptible to neuraminidase treatment (Gc 1C13 and 1C14). The three other new variants appeared as a single band, which was unaffected by neuraminidase treatment (Gc 2A9, 2C5, and 2C6). An enclosure experiment was performed to test for direct predationeffects on fecundity and adult body size of the copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis in the field. By introducing a high densityof fish (15 underyearling roach, Rutilus rutilus, per 350litre enclosure) and documenting the short-term effects on traitsin a rapidly decreasing prey population, responses to changes inthe phytoplankton community were minimized. After 68 hours ofpredation, clutch size and frequency of females carrying eggs weresignificantly lower in fish enclosures. Female density was moreaffected than male density. Predation selected against large bodysize in both sexes but less so in females, leading to an increasedsexual size dimorphism. The results agree with predictions based onprey selectivity in fish. Predation risk should increase withclutch size and body size since these traits increase theconspicuousness of prey. The size of the highly visible egg-clutchmay be more important than body size. Female body size wasuncorrelated to clutch size, which may explain the weaker sizeeffect among females and the changed sexual sizedimorphism. 相似文献

Two peat cores from the Store Mosse mire in the central part of South Sweden have been analyzed for dry bulk density, carbon, and nitrogen They cover the development of the peat mound from the time of the conversion of the initial fen to an ombrotrophic bog at 5450 BP through three different bog stages, the Fuscum. the Rubellum-Fuscum and the Magellanicum bog stages, each one characterized by a specific macrofossil assemblage All N supplied to the bog surface is assumed to be contained in the organic matter At the beginning of the Magellanicum bog stage, 1000 BP, the nitrogen accumulation rate increased from an earlier value of ca 0.4 g m–2 yr–1 to 0.8 g m–2 yr–1 These accumulation rates for N have been used to establish time scales for the periods between the 14C-datings The estimated litter deposition rate in the hummocks is 120 g m–2 yr–1 in the two older bog stages and 270 g m–2 yr–1 in the Magellanicum bog stage The decay losses in the acrotelm increased, as a proportion of the addition, with time through each one of the bog stages The range of variation in the cores for the acrotelm decay losses was 25-80%. and the annual input of organic matter to the catotelm, 30-130 g m–2 These ranges are greater than those found among recent bog hummocks in NW Europe and North America The decay losses during 5000 yr in the catotelm may not have exceeded 20% of the original input The over-all net rate of accumulation of C was highest, ca 40 g m–2 yr–1, at the beginning of the Fuscum bog stage The changes in the macrofossil assemblages are all associated with rapid increases in the peat accumulation rate, but decreases in accumulation rate are not At the conversion from fen to bog the increased input of organic matter to the catotelm depended on expansion of Sphagnum fuscum which formed a decay resistant litter Later increases depended on rapid rises of the mean water table, resulting in shorter residence times and smaller decay losses from the acrotelm The periods of decreases in input of organic matter to the catotelm depended on longer residence times in the acrotelm when the water table fell relative to the bog surface However, comparisons with recent conditions suggest that the variation in mean water level relative to the surface may not have exceeded 10-15 cm 相似文献

The relative frequency of the common phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) mutation R408W and its associations with polymorphic RFLP, VNTR, and short-tandem-repeat (STR) sites in the PAH gene were examined in many European populations and one representative North American population of defined European descent. This mutation was found to cluster in two regions: in northwest Europe among Irish and Scottish peoples, and in eastern Europe, including the Commonwealth of Independent States. This allele was significantly less frequent in intervening populations. In eastern European populations, the R408W mutation is strongly associated with RFLP haplotype 2, the three-copy VNTR allele (VNTR 3), and the 240-bp STR allele. In northwestern European populations, it is strongly associated with RFLP haplotype 1, the VNTR allele containing eight repeats (VNTR 8), and the 244-bp STR allele. An examination of the linkage between the R408W mutation and highly polymorphic RFLP, VNTR, and STR haplotypes suggests that recurrence is the most likely mechanism to account for the two different major haplotype associations of R408W in Europe. 相似文献

Attraction of maleAgrotis segetum Dennis & Schiffermüller (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to sex pheromone traps in fields, which were treated with one or three pheromone
components was investigated. Small plots of 1/4ha size were treated with synthetic pheromone, released by 25 evenly dispersed
latex rubber tube dispensers. The dispensers were loaded with either 500 μg Z5-10:OAc (50 mg/ha), or 1000 μg Z7-12:OAc (100
mg/ha), or a 3-component mixture consisting of 500 μg Z5-10:OAc+1000 μg Z7-12:OAc+1000 μg Z9-14:OAc. Pheromone traps were
placed both within and outside of the treated area in a cross design, with an intertrap spacing of 15 m. Release rates from
disruption dispensers were measured in the laboratory after being exposed in the field. The release rates of the components
were estimated to be 0.44, 0.11, and 0.06 μg/h/dispenser for Z5-10:OAc, Z7-12:OAc and Z9-14:OAc, respectively. The highest
effect of disruption was achieved by the three-component blend, resulting in a significant suppression of trap catches extending
5 m outside of the treated area. The Z5-10:OAc treatment resulted in reduced trap catches inside the treated area, but the
effect did not extend outside. Z7-12:OAc alone did not result in any significant reduction in trap catch. The results indicate
that different mechanisms may explain the disruptive effect of the treatments and that the single pheromone components are

Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler, grown in drop culture, produced alternariol and alternariol monomethyl ether in late growth phase. Production was almost completely inhibited when the fungal cultures were exposed to white light (180 W/m2), although mycelial dry weight was not significantly affected. The fungus was most sensitive to light during the exponential growth phase. Twelve hours of light exposure was sufficient to decrease significantly the production of the secondary metabolites. The amphetamine-induced inhibition of brain noradrenaline (NA) containing neurons in the rat locus coeruleus (LC) was pharmacologically analyzed utilizing single unit recording techniques. The presynaptic α-receptor blocking agent yohimbine (10 mg/kg i.p., 30 min before) largely prevented the amphetamine-induced depression of LC units in contrast to prazosin (0.6 mg/kg i.p., 30 min) or phenoxybenzamine (20 mg/kg, 30 min) which both slow preference for postsynaptic α-receptors. The β-receptor blocking agent, propranolol (10 mg/kg, 30 min), as well as the peripherally but not centrally active α-receptor blocking drug phentolamine (10 mg/kg, i.p., 30 min), also did not block the amphetamine effect. The LC inhibition by amphetamine was blocked by pretreatment with reserpine (10 mg/kg, i.p., 5 h), which caused almost total depletion of brain catecholamines. However, unlike the amphetamine-induced inhibition of central dopamine (DA) neurons the NA cell inhibition was not blocked by pretreatment with a tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor (α-MT, 50 or 250 mg/kg i.p., 30 min). These results suggest that the amphetamine-induced inhibition of NA neurons in the LC is an indirect effect, mediated via activation of central α-receptors of presynaptic character. The lack of antagonism by α-MT indicate that the NA release by amphetamine, unlike its effect on brain DA, is not critically dependent on the rate of tyrosine hydroxylation. Thus the euphoriant action of amphetamine, which is blocked by α-MT, may be associated with release of DA rather than NA in brain. 相似文献
