Different species in a given site or population of a given species in different sites may fluctuate in synchrony if they are
affected similarly by factors such as spatially autocorrelated climate, predation, or by dispersal between populations of
one species. We used county wise time series of hunting bag records of four Norwegian tetraonid species covering 24 years
to examine patterns of interspecific and intraspecific synchrony. We estimated synchrony at three spatial scales; national,
regional (consisting of counties with similar climate), and county level. Ecologically related species with overlapping distributions
exhibited strong synchrony across Norway, but there was much variation between the different regions and counties. Regions
with a long coastline to both the North Sea and the Norwegian Ocean exhibited an overall stronger synchrony than those consisting
of more continental areas. Intraspecific synchrony was generally low across all counties, but stronger synchrony between counties
within regions defined by climatic conditions. Synchrony was negatively related to distance between populations in three of
four species. Only the synchrony in willow ptarmigan showed a clear negative relationship with distance, while the other species
had both strong positive and negative correlations at short distances. Strong interspecific synchrony between some species
pairs within regions and weak intraspecific synchrony across counties within regions suggest a stronger synchronizing effect
from environmental factors such as weather or predation and less effect from dispersal. Our results suggest that the complete
tetraonid community is structured by environmental factors affecting the different species similarly and causes widespread
interspecific synchrony. Local factors affecting the population dynamics nevertheless frequently forces neighbouring populations

Many fungi growing on plant biomass produce proteins currently classified as glycoside hydrolase family 61 (GH61), some of which are known to act synergistically with cellulases. In this study we show that PcGH61D, the gene product of an open reading frame in the genome of Phanerochaete chrysosporium, is an enzyme that cleaves cellulose using a metal-dependent oxidative mechanism that leads to generation of aldonic acids. The activity of this enzyme and its beneficial effect on the efficiency of classical cellulases are stimulated by the presence of electron donors. Experiments with reduced cellulose confirmed the oxidative nature of the reaction catalyzed by PcGH61D and indicated that the enzyme may be capable of penetrating into the substrate. Considering the abundance of GH61-encoding genes in fungi and genes encoding their functional bacterial homologues currently classified as carbohydrate binding modules family 33 (CBM33), this enzyme activity is likely to turn out as a major determinant of microbial biomass-degrading efficiency. 相似文献

Square arrays are prominent structures in plasma membranes of brain, muscle, and kidneys with an unknown function. So far, the analysis of these arrays has been restricted to freeze fracture preparations, which have shown square arrays to contain the water channel Aquaporin-4 (AQP4). Using Blue-Native PAGE immunoblots, we provide evidence that higher-order AQP4 complexes correspond to square arrays, with the AQP4 isoform M23 playing a dominant role. Our data are consistent with the idea that square arrays consist of aggregates of AQP4 tetramers complexed with multiples of dimers. By comparison, Aquaporin-1 and Aquaporin-9 form tetramers, but not higher-order complexes. AQP4 square arrays are stable under several biochemical purification steps. Analyzing the internal composition of the higher-order complexes by 2D gels, we demonstrate that the square arrays in addition to M23 also invariably contain AQP4, M1, and a novel AQP4 isoform that we call Mz. The visualization AQP4 square arrays by a rapid, biochemical assay provides new insight in the molecular organization of square arrays and gives further proof of the heterogeneity of AQP4 square arrays in vivo. 相似文献

The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether variation of human head size results in different outcome regarding intracranial responses following a direct impact. Finite Element models representing different head sizes and with various element mesh densities were created. Frontal impacts towards padded surfaces as well as inertial loads were analyzed. The variation in intracranial stresses and intracranial pressures for different sizes of the geometry and for various element meshes were investigated. A significant correlation was found between experiment and simulation with regard to intracranial pressure characteristics. The maximal effective stresses in the brain increased more than a fourfold, from 3.6kPa for the smallest head size to 16.3kPa for the largest head size using the same acceleration impulse. When simulating a frontal impact towards a padding, the head injury criterion (HIC) value varies from the highest level of 2433 at a head mass of 2.34kg to the lowest level of 1376 at a head mass of 5.98kg, contradicting the increase in maximal intracranial stresses with head size. The conclusion is that the size dependence of the intracranial stresses associated with injury, is not predicted by the HIC. It is suggested that variations in head size should be considered when developing new head injury criteria. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to provide data on the morphology of the gastrointestinal tract of Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae). It was found to consist of a long oesophagus, a two-chambered stomach, a small intestine measuring only 5.22body length, two rudimentary caeca and a short colon, typical of carnivorous birds. The stomach comprised a glandular proventriculus and a muscular gizzard that frequently contained grit. An acidic pH was recorded in both chambers. Ultrastructural studies of the small intestinal mucosal membrane revealed epithelial cells with elongated, irregular microvilli and high affinity for toluidine blue, absorptive intestinal epithelial cells and goblet cells. Numerous large lymphocyte-like cells were observed close to the brush border of the epithelium, and empty spaces on the epithelial surface reflected normal cell loss in the small intestine. The rudimentary caeca and colon provide relatively little volume and time for symbiotic bacteria to aid the digestion of crustacean chitin. 相似文献

Processing of lignocellulosic materials to fuels such as methane and bioethanol may involve several processing steps including pretreatment, saccharification, fermentation, and anaerobic digestion. The amounts of substrate used in these processes are usually based on dry matter content, and the processes themselves typically lead to a change in dry matter content. Thus, it is of great importance to be able to measure dry matter accurately. Dry matter content is commonly determined by measuring loss of water during oven drying. We have used Karl Fischer (KF) titration to measure the water content in a wide range of biomass fractions and have compared these data to results obtained by oven drying. This revealed considerable differences for all tested materials. For lignocellulosic materials, oven drying tends to overestimate dry matter content for untreated material. On the other hand, oven drying generally underestimates dry matter content in pretreated materials due to loss of organic volatiles. These differences have major consequences for the calculation of mass balances and yields in bioprocessing. The KF method gives more accurate water determination than oven drying due to the unique selectivity of the analysis. The method is suitable for the analysis of lignocellulosic biomasses and is particularly useful for determination of water content in pretreated materials, where oven drying usually underestimates the dry matter content due to loss of volatiles. 相似文献

Summary Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg) are determined by atomic absorption flame spectrometry in isolated cardiac mitochondria from mice receiving subcutaneous injections of DL-isoproterenol HC1 (ISO), and in mitochondria of untreated controls. In the controls, mitochondria were isolated in the presence or absence of ruthenium red. On the absence of ruthenium red in the isolation medium, mitochondrial Ca levels increase by about 300%, while levels of Mg remain unchanged. Focal myocardial necrosis following a single ISO-injection is shown by electron microscopy. Ca and Mg levels are largely unaffected by a single dose of ISO until 24 h after the injection. A slight increase in Ca occurs in the 48 h samples. When multiple injections of ISO are given every 12th hour for 48 h, 72 h and 96 h, respectively, endogenous Ca and Mg increase significantly. Changes in phytoplankton community composition potentially affect the entire marine food web. Because of seasonal cycles and inter-annual variations in species composition, long-term monitoring, covering many sequential years, is required to establish a baseline study and to reveal long-term trends. The current study describes the phytoplankton biomass variations and species composition in relation to hydrographic and meteorological conditions in the Raunefjord, western Norway, over a 6-year period from 2001 to 2006. The extent of inflow or upwelling in the fjord varied from year to year and resulted in pronounced differences in water column stability. The annual phytoplankton community succession showed some repeated seasonal patterns, but also high variability between years. Two to four diatom blooms were observed per year, and the spring blooms occurring before water column stratification in March were dominated by Skeletonema marinoi and Chaetoceros socialis, and other Chaetoceros and Thalassiosira spp. Blooms of the haptophytes Phaeocystis pouchetii and Emiliania huxleyi were irregular and in some years totally absent. Although E. huxleyi was present all year round it appeared in bloom concentrations only in 2003, when the summer was warm and the water column characterized by high surface temperatures and pronounced stratification. The annual average abundance of both diatoms and flagellates increased during the six years. Despite the high variation from year to year, our investigation provides valuable knowledge about annual phytoplankton community patterns in the region, and can be used as a reference to detect possible future changes. 相似文献
