The dynamics of the nutrient pools and their stoichiometry as well as their control by ecosystem metabolism (benthic and planktonic) and benthic–pelagic exchanges (sedimentation rates and sediment waterfluxes) were examined in the Mediterranean littoral (Blanes Bay, NE Spain). Dissolved organic nitrogen comprised about half of the nitrogen present in the water column and the carbon pool was dominated by the inorganic pool (95% of the carbon present in the water column). The dissolved and particulate organic pools were deficient in P relative to C and N, indicating a rapid recycling of P from organic matter. The pelagic compartment was heterotrophic, supported by significant allochthonous inputs of land material, which also contributed greatly to the sedimentary inputs (37% of total sedimenting carbon). In contrast, the benthic compartment was autotrophic, with the excess net benthic community production balancing the deficit in pelagic community production, leading to metabolic equilibrium at the station studied. Sedimentary inputs of nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon exceeded the benthic release, indicating that the benthic compartment acted as a sink for nutrients, consistent with its autotrophic nature. Carbon inputs to the benthic compartment also exceeded requirements, due to the allochthonous subsidies to the system, so that the benthic compartment stored or exported organic carbon. We explore the distinctive characteristics of Mexico’s society, politics and history that impacted the establishment of genetics in Mexico, as a new disciplinary field that began in the early 20th century and was consolidated and institutionalized in the second half. We identify about three stages in the institutionalization of genetics in Mexico. The first stage can be characterized by Edmundo Taboada, who was the leader of a research program initiated during the Cárdenas government (1934–1940), which was primarily directed towards improving the condition of small Mexican farmers. Taboada is the first Mexican post-graduate investigator in phytotechnology and phytopathology, trained at Cornell University and the University of Minnesota, in 1932 and 1933, respectively. He was the first investigator to teach plant genetics at the National School of Agriculture and wrote the first textbook of general genetics, Genetics Notes, in 1938. Taboada’s most important single genetics contribution was the production of “stabilized” corn varieties. The extensive exile of Spanish intellectuals to Mexico, after the end of Spain’s Civil War (1936–1939), had a major influence in Mexican science and characterizes the second stage. The three main personalities contributing to Mexican genetics are Federico Bonet de Marco and Bibiano Fernández Osorio Tafall, at the National School of Biological Sciences, and José Luis de la Loma y Oteyza, at the Chapingo Agriculture School. The main contribution of the Spanish exiles to the introduction of genetics in Mexico concerned teaching. They introduced in several universities genetics as a distinctive discipline within the biology curriculum and wrote genetics text books and manuals. The third stage is identified with Alfonso León de Garay, who founded the Genetics and Radiobiology Program in 1960 within the National Commission of Nuclear Energy, which had been founded in 1956. The Genetics and Radiobiology Program rapidly became a disciplinary program, for it embraced research, teaching, and training of academics and technicians. The Mexican Genetics Society, created by de Garay in 1966, and the development of strains and cultures for genetics research were important activities. One of de Garay’s key requirements was the compulsory training of the Program’s scientists for at least one or two years in the best universities of the United States and Europe. De Garay’s role in the development of Mexican genetics was fundamental. His broad vision encompassed the practice of genetics in all its manifestations.  相似文献

The effect of surface electrochemical polarization on the growth of cells of Pseudomonas fluorescens (ATCC 17552) on gold electrodes has been examined. Potentials positive or negative to the potential of zero charge (PZC) of gold were applied, and these resulted in changes in cell morphology, size at cell division, time to division, and biofilm structure. At -0.2 V (Ag/AgCl-3 M NaCl), cells elongated at a rate of up to 0.19 microm min(-1), rendering daughter cells that reached up to 3.8 microm immediately after division. The doubling time for the entire population, estimated from the increment in the fraction of surface covered by bacteria, was 82 +/- 7 min. Eight-hour-old biofilms at -0.2 V were composed of large cells distributed in expanded mushroom-like microcolonies that protruded several micrometers in the solution. A different behavior was observed under positive polarization. At an applied potential of 0.5 V, the doubling time of the population was 103 +/- 8 min, cells elongated at a lower rate (up to 0.08 microm min(-1)), rendering shorter daughters (2.5 +/- 0.5 microm) after division, although the duplication times were virtually the same at all potentials. Biofilms grown under this positive potential were composed of short cells distributed in a large number of compact microcolonies. These were flatter than those grown at -0.2 V or at the PZC and were pyramidal in shape. Polarization effects on cell growth and biofilm structure resembled those previously reported as produced by changes in the nutritional level of the culture medium.  相似文献

We have recently demonstrated the cardioprotective effects of a non-alcoholic extract of Argentinian red wine (RWE) on ischemia-reperfusion injury. The aim of the present study was to assess the relative contribution of four phenolic fractions separated from RWE by liquid/liquid extraction with solvents of decreasing hydrophobicity, to the myocardial protection achieved by the original extract. Isovolumic perfused rat hearts treated with each fraction 10 min before ischemia and the first 10 min of reperfusion were submitted to a 20-min global ischemic period followed by 30 min of reperfusion. The treatment with the fraction rich in polymeric proanthocyanidins (fraction IV = aqueous residue) significantly improved the postischemic recovery of left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP) and +dP/dt (max) (111 +/- 5% and 117 +/- 6% vs 61 +/- 4%, 62 +/- 5% , respectively, detected in control hearts) and abolished the increase of left ventricular end diastolic pressure (LVEDP) (8 +/- 2 mmHg vs 42 +/- 4 mmHg in untreated hearts). However, the fraction rich in anthocyanins (III: butanol) elicited a cardioprotective action weaker than the original extract. On the other hand, the representative of either resveratrol or flavan-3-ols and flavonols (fractions I and II) failed to induce this type of response. LDH release and TBARS concentration were significantly lowered after treatment with fraction IV alone. These data show that the fraction rich in polymeric proanthocyanidins exerts a protective effect against myocardial alterations derived from ischemia and reperfusion comparable to the original RWE. This beneficial effect can be correlated to the ability of that fraction to attenuate the degree of lipid peroxidation.  相似文献

An experimental model has been developed to give students hands-on experience with the fundamental laws of hemodynamics. The proposed experimental setup is of simple construction but permits the precise measurements of physical variables involved in the experience. The model consists in a series of experiments where different basic phenomena are quantitatively investigated, such as the pressure drop in a long straight vessel and in an obstructed vessel, the transition from laminar to turbulent flow, the association of vessels in vascular networks, or the generation of a critical stenosis. Through these experiments, students acquire a direct appreciation of the importance of the parameters involved in the relationship between pressure and flow rate, thus facilitating the comprehension of more complex problems in hemodynamics.  相似文献
