The ant‐plant Humboldtia brunonis secretes extrafloral nectar (EFN) despite the lack of antiherbivore protection from most ants. EFN was richer in composition than phloem sap and honeydew from untended Hemiptera on the plant, suggesting that EFN could potentially distract ants from honeydew, since ants rarely tended Hemiptera on this plant. 相似文献

Heterotrophic carbon utilizing microbes were acclimatized in the laboratory by inoculating sludge collected from the waste
discharge pond of a small-scale rural abattoir in India in a nutrient solution intermittently fed with glucose and ammonium
chloride. Cultures of 10 well-developed isolates were selected and grown in a basal medium containing glucose and ammonium
chloride. Culture supernatants were periodically analyzed for ammonium nitrogen (NH4
+-N) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Polyphasic taxonomic study of the most active nitrifier (S18) was done. Half saturation
concentration (K
s), maximum rate of substrate utilization (k), yield coefficient (Y) and decay coefficient (K
d) were determined from the Lineweaver–Burk plot using the modified Monod equation. S18 was able to remove 97 ± 2% of (NH4
+-N) and 88 ± 3% of COD. Molecular phylogenetic study supported by physiological and biochemical characteristics assigned S18
as Achromobacter xylosoxidans. Nitrification activity of A. xylosoxidans was demonstrated for the first time, while interestingly, the distinctive anaerobic denitrification property was preserved
in S18. K
s values were determined as 232.13 ± 1.5 mg/l for COD reduction and 2.131 ± 1.9 mg/l for NH4
+-N utilization. Yield coefficients obtained were 0.4423 ± 0.1134 mg of MLVSS/mg of COD and 0.2461 ± 0.0793 mg of MLVSS/mg
of NH4
+-N while the decay coefficients were 0.0627 ± 0.0013 per day and 0.0514 ± 0.0008 per day, respectively. After a contact period of 24 h, 650 ± 5 mg/l solids were produced when the initial concentration of COD and NH4

Testosterone is commonly known for its role in the regulation of reproductive physiology in men. Epidemiologic studies suggest that endogenous testosterone levels may be implicated in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum total testosterone (TT) levels and lipid profile as well as fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels in male patients ranging from 40 to 70 years old with angiographically proven CVDs from Nadia and Murshidabad district of West Bengal, India. These data were compared with the normal men with no CVD history. We observed a significantly low serum TT levels in CVD patient group compared to the normal group. Among CVD patients, a significant (p < 0.05) negative association was found between serum TT and total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein and very low density lipoprotein, whereas a significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) was found between serum TT and high density lipoprotein. We also observed a highly significant negative correlation between TT and FBG levels in CVD patient group. Thus, in these two densely populated district of West Bengal with poor socio-economic condition, low levels of serum TT in elderly men is associated with CVD that appear together with an atherogenic lipid milieu that may be involved in the pathogenesis of CVD. Results further indicate that low serum TT might have a role in the development of hyperglycemia as evidenced from high FBG level in elderly men. 相似文献

A stoichiometric model of metabolism was developed to describe the balance of metabolic reactions during steady-state growth of Escherichia coli on glucose (or metabolic intermediates) and mineral salts. The model incorporates 153 reversible and 147 irreversible reactions and 289 metabolites from several metabolic data bases for the biosynthesis of the macromolecular precursors, coenzymes, and prosthetic groups necessary for synthesis of all cellular macromolecules. Correlations describing how the cellular composition changes with growth rate were developed from experimental data and were used to calculate the drain of precursors to macromolecules, coenzymes, and prosthetic groups from the metabolic network for the synthesis of those macromolecules at a specific growth rate. Energy requirements for macromolecular polymerization and proofreading, transport of metabolites, and maintenance of transmembrane gradients were included in the model rather than a lumped maintenance energy term. The underdetermined set of equations was solved using the Simplex algorithm, employing realistic objective functions and constraints; the drain of precursors, coenzymes, and prosthetic groups and the energy requirements for the synthesis of macromolecules served as the primary set of constraints. The model accurately predicted experimentally determined metabolic fluxes for aerobic growth on acetate or acetate plus glucose. In addition, the model predicted the genetic and metabolic regulation that must occur for growth under different conditions, such as the opening of the glyoxylate shunt during growth on acetate and the branching of the tricarboxylic acid cycle under anaerobic growth. Il y a prédominance du sexe femelle chez le parasite. Le superparasitisme ne para?t avoir que peu d'action sur le taux sexuel.
Quand plus de trois parasites se partagent un seul h?te, la longévité de l'adulte et la fécondité du parasite sont réduits.
De tels individus sont mauvais voiliers et inactifs dans leur comportement.

The effects of cell entrapment on the growth rate and metabolic activity of major groups of bacteria (betaproteobacteria and gammaproteobacteria) in biological municipal wastewater treatment were investigated. Three different cell entrapment media (alginate, carrageenan and polyvinyl alcohol) and three cell-to-matrix ratios (0.1%, 0.2% and 0.6%, w v−1) were examined. Representative species of betaproteobacteria were Alcaligenes faecalis and Comamonas testosteroni whereas Pseudomonas putida was a gammaproteobacteria species studied. Free (non-entrapped) cells were included in the study for comparative purpose. Results indicated that the entrapment, type of entrapment media, and cell-to-matrix ratio had significant effects on the growth and metabolic activity of major groups of bacteria in wastewater treatment. Polyvinyl alcohol entrapped cells had the highest specific growth and specific substrate utilization rates. Increase of cell-to-matrix ratio (from 0.1% to 0.2% or 0.6%) did not improve the specific growth and specific substrate utilization rates. The relative performances provided by different entrapment media of the three species studied were quite consistent. This study showed that the suitable choices of entrapment media and cell-to-matrix ratio are important but similar for major groups of bacteria in wastewater treatment. 相似文献

Energy-coupled transporters in the outer membrane of Escherichia coli and other Gram-negative bacteria allow the entry of scarce substrates, toxic proteins, and bacterial viruses (phages) into the cells. The required energy is derived from the proton-motive force of the cytoplasmic membrane, which is coupled to the outer membrane via the ExbB-ExbD-TonB protein complex. Knowledge of the structure of this complex is required to elucidate the mechanisms of energy harvesting in the cytoplasmic membrane and energy transfer to the outer membrane transporters. Here we solubilized an ExbB oligomer and an ExbB-ExbD subcomplex from the cytoplasmic membrane with the detergent undecyl maltoside. Using laser-induced liquid bead ion desorption mass spectrometry (LILBID-MS), we determined at moderate desorption laser energies the oligomeric structure of ExbB to be mainly hexameric (ExbB(6)), with minor amounts of trimeric (ExbB(3)), dimeric (ExbB(2)), and monomeric (ExbB(1)) oligomers. Under the same conditions ExbB-ExbD formed a subcomplex consisting of ExbB(6)ExbD(1), with a minor amount of ExbB(5)ExbD(1). At higher desorption laser intensities, ExbB(1) and ExbD(1) and traces of ExbB(3)ExbD(1), ExbB(2)ExbD(1), ExbB(1)ExbD(1), ExbB(3), and ExbB(2) were observed. Since the ExbB(6) complex and the ExbB(6)ExbD(1) complex remained stable during solubilization and subsequent chromatographic purification on nickel-nitrilotriacetate agarose, Strep-Tactin, and Superdex 200, and during native blue gel electrophoresis, we concluded that ExbB(6) and ExbB(6)ExbD(1) are subcomplexes on which the final complex including TonB is assembled. 相似文献
