A critical comparison of methyl and ethyl esters production from soybean and rice bran oil in the presence of microwaves

Transesterification of vegetable oils (from soybeans and rice bran) into methyl and ethyl esters using a batch microwave system was investigated in this study. A critical comparison between the two alcohols was performed in terms of yields, quality, and reaction kinetics. Parameters tested were temperature (60, 70 and 80 °C) and time (5, 10, 15 and 20 min). At all tested conditions, more than 96% conversion rates were obtained for both ethanol and methanol. Use of microwave technology to assist the transesterification process resulted in faster reaction times and reduced catalyst requirement (about ten-fold decrease). Methanol required lower alcohol:oil ratios than normally used in conventional heating, whereas ethanol required higher molar ratios. All esters produced using this method met ASTM biodiesel quality specifications. Methanol performed better in terms of performance and costs, while ethanol may have some environmental and safety benefits.     

Debating dussehra and reinterpreting rebellion in bastar district, central india

This article unpacks the history of a 'tribal' region in Central India to show that the current appearance of 'two-dimensionality' or stark opposition between the people and the state is a product of colonial and post-colonial policies rather than a pre-colonial relic. It challenges the idea of 'coercive subordination' as an adequate explanation for kingship in this area, as argued by the late Alfred Gell. Instead, this article uses the same phenomena, annual Dussehra rituals and successive rebellions, to argue for a more dialectical concept of hegemony. It also takes issue with culturalist interpretations of rule, arguing instead for a historically nuanced political economy.     

A PMMA microcapillary quantum dot linked immunosorbent assay (QLISA)

The development of a simple and inexpensive quantum dot based immunoassay for detecting myeloperoxidase (MPO) in stool samples is reported (QLISA). The method developed utilizes readily available polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microcapillaries as substrates for performing the sandwich assay. High power (80 mW) and low power (10 mW) UV-LEDs were tested for their efficiency in maximizing detection sensitivity in a waveguide illumination or a side illumination mode. The results obtained indicate that both waveguide and side illumination modes can be employed for detecting MPO down to 15 ng/mL, however the high power LED in a side illumination mode improves sensitivity and simplifies the data acquisition process. The protocol and sensor robustness was evaluated with animal stool samples spiked with MPO and the results indicate that the sensitivity of detection is not compromised when used in stool samples. The effect of the ionic strength of the environment on the fluorescence stability of quantum dots was evaluated and found to affect the assay only if long imaging times are employed. Replacing the buffer with glycerol during imaging increased the fluorescence intensity of quantum dots while significantly minimized the loss in intensity even after 2 h.     

Iopamidol myelography-induced seizures

Iopamidol, a water-soluble contrast agent, has been rarely associated with seizures. We describe a case of generalized tonic-clonic seizure after cervical myelography with iopamidol in a previously healthy young man. In patients presenting with seizures, a history of recent myelography should be considered as an etiology. Iopamidol myelography may be associated with a risk of seizures. Clinicians need to be aware of this complication and inform their patients about such risk.     

Antileishmanial phenylpropanoids from Alpinia galanga (Linn.) Willd

Hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts (100 microg/ml) of Alpinia galanga rhizomes exhibited significant activity in vitro against promastigotes of L. donovani. Twelve compounds namely, methyleugenol (1), p-coumaryl diacetate (2), 1'-acetoxychavicol acetate (3), 1'-acetoxyeugenol acetate (4), trans-p-acetoxycinnamyl alcohol (5), trans-3,4-dimethoxycinnamyl alcohol (6), p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (7), p-hydroxycinnamaldehyde (8), trans-p-coumaryl alcohol (9), galangin (10), trans-p-coumaric acid (11) and galanganol B (12) were isolated from these extracts. Of these, compounds 2, 3, 4 and 5 were found most active in vitro against promastigotes of L. donovani with IC50 values of 39.3, 32.9, 18.9 and 79.9 microM respectively. This is the first report of antileishmanial activity of the extracts and isolated constituents of A. galanga.     

Interaction of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate with human serum albumin: fluorescence, fourier transform infrared, circular dichroism, and docking studies

(-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the major constituent of green tea has been reported to prevent many diseases by virtue of its antioxidant properties. The binding of EGCG with human serum albumin (HSA) has been investigated for the first time by using fluorescence, circular dichroism (CD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and protein-ligand docking. We observed a quenching of fluorescence of HSA in the presence of EGCG. The binding parameters were determined by a Scatchard plot and the results were found to be consistent with those obtained from a modified Stern-Volmer equation. From the thermodynamic parameters calculated according to the van't Hoff equation, the enthalpy change deltaH degrees and entropy change deltaS degrees were found to be -22.59 and 16.23 J/mol K, respectively. These values suggest that apart from an initial hydrophobic association, the complex is held together by van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding. Data obtained by fluorescence spectroscopy, CD, and FTIR experiments along with the docking studies suggest that EGCG binds to residues located in subdomains IIa and IIIa of HSA. Specific interactions are observed with residues Trp 214, Arg 218, Gln 221, Asn 295 and Asp 451. We have also looked at changes in the accessible surface area of the interacting residues on binding EGCG for a better understanding of the interaction.     

Phylogenetic analysis of the tenascin gene family: evidence of origin early in the chordate lineage

Background  

Tenascins are a family of glycoproteins found primarily in the extracellular matrix of embryos where they help to regulate cell proliferation, adhesion and migration. In order to learn more about their origins and relationships to each other, as well as to clarify the nomenclature used to describe them, the tenascin genes of the urochordate Ciona intestinalis, the pufferfish Tetraodon nigroviridis and Takifugu rubripes and the frog Xenopus tropicalis were identified and their gene organization and predicted protein products compared with the previously characterized tenascins of amniotes.
