There were about three-year cycles in the populations of arctic foxes, and the breeding productivities of brent geese and curlew sandpipers on the Taimyr Peninsula, Russia, The populations of arctic foxes and lemmings changed in synchrony. The breeding productivities of the birds tended to be good when the arctic foxes were increasing in numbers and poor when the arctic foxes were decreasing. There was a negative relationship between arctic fox numbers (or occupied lairs) and the breeding productivity of brent geese in the following year. Although there was evidence of wide-spread synchrony In the lemming cycle across the Taimyr Peninsula, some localities showed differences, However, such sites would still have been influenced by the general pattern of fox abundance in the typical tundra zone of the Taimyr Peninsula, where most of the arctic foxes breed and from which extensive movements of foxes occur after a decline in lemming numbers. The results support a prey-switching hypothesis (also known as the alternative prey hypothesis) whereby arctic foxes, and other predators, feed largely on lemmings when these are abundant or increasing, but switch to birds when the lemming population is small or declining. The relationships between arctic foxes, lemmings and brent geese may be further influenced by snowny owls which create fox-exclusion zones around their nests, thus providing safe nesting areas for the geese.  相似文献

Dehydration and hyperthermia may impair gastricemptying (GE) during exercise; the effect of these alterations onintestinal water flux (WF) is unknown. Thus the purpose of this studywas to determine the effect of hypohydration (~2.7% body weight) on GE and WF of a water placebo (WP) during cycling exercise (85 min, 65%maximal oxygen uptake) in a cool environment (22°C) and to alsocompare GE and WF of three carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions (CES)while the subjects were hypohydrated. GE and WF were determined simultaneously by a nasogastric tube placed in the gastric antrum andvia a multilumen tube that spanned the duodenum and the first 25 cm ofjejunum. Hypohydration was attained 12-16 h before experiments bylow-intensity exercise in a hot (45°C), humid (relative humidity 50%) environment. Seven healthy subjects (age 26.7 ± 1.7 yr,maximal oxygen uptake 55.9 ± 8.2 ml · kg1 · min1)ingested either WP or a 6% (330 mosmol), 8% (400 mosmol), or a 9%(590 mosmol) CES the morning following hypohydration. For comparison,subjects ingested WP after a euhydration protocol. Solutions (~2.0liters total) were ingested as a large bolus (4.6 ml/kg body wt) 5 minbefore exercise and as small serial feedings (2.3 ml/kg body wt) every10 min of exercise. Average GE rates were not different amongconditions (P > 0.05). Mean(±SE) values for WF were also similar(P > 0.05) for the euhydration (15.3 ± 1.7 ml · cm1 · h1)and hypohydration (18.3 ± 2.6 ml · cm1 · h1)experiments. During exercise after hypohydration, waterabsorption was greater (P < 0.05)with ingestion of WP (18.3 ± 2.6) and the 6% CES (16.5 ± 3.7),compared with the 8% CES (6.9 ± 1.5) and the 9% CES (1.8 ± 1.7). Mean values for final core temperature (38.6 ± 0.1°C),heart rate (152 ± 1 beats/min), and change in plasma volume(5.7 ± 0.7%) were similar among experimental trials. Weconclude that 1) hypohydration to~3% body weight does not impair GE or fluid absorption duringmoderate exercise when ingesting WP, and2) hyperosmolality (>400 mosmol)reduced WF in the proximal intestine.

The sphingomyelin derivative ceramide is a signaling molecule implicated in numerous physiological events. Recently published reports indicate that ceramide levels are elevated in insulin-responsive tissues of diabetic animals and that agents which trigger ceramide production inhibit insulin signaling. In the present series of studies, the short-chain ceramide analog C2-ceramide inhibited insulin-stimulated glucose transport by ~50% in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, with similar reductions in hormone-stimulated translocation of the insulin-responsive glucose transporter (GLUT4) and insulin-responsive aminopeptidase. C2-ceramide also inhibited phosphorylation and activation of Akt, a molecule proposed to mediate multiple insulin-stimulated metabolic events. C2-ceramide, at concentrations which antagonized activation of both glucose uptake and Akt, had no effect on the tyrosine phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1) or the amounts of p85 protein and phosphatidylinositol kinase activity that immunoprecipitated with anti-IRS-1 or antiphosphotyrosine antibodies. Moreover, C2-ceramide also inhibited stimulation of Akt by platelet-derived growth factor, an event that is IRS-1 independent. C2-ceramide did not inhibit insulin-stimulated phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase or pp70 S6-kinase, and it actually stimulated phosphorylation of the latter in the absence of insulin. Various pharmacological agents, including the immunosuppressant rapamycin, the protein synthesis inhibitor cycloheximide, and several protein kinase C inhibitors, were without effect on ceramide’s inhibition of Akt. These studies demonstrate ceramide’s capacity to inhibit activation of Akt and imply that this is a mechanism of antagonism of insulin-dependent physiological events, such as the peripheral activation of glucose transport and the suppression of apoptosis.  相似文献

Background

Carbon credits are an increasingly prevalent market-based mechanism used to subsidize household water treatment technologies (HWT). This involves generating credits through the reduction of carbon emissions from boiling water by providing a technology that reduces greenhouse gas emissions linked to climate change. Proponents claim this process delivers health and environmental benefits by providing clean drinking water and reducing greenhouse gases. Selling carbon credits associated with HWT projects requires rigorous monitoring to ensure households are using the HWT and achieving the desired benefits of the device. Critics have suggested that the technologies provide neither the benefits of clean water nor reduced emissions. This study explores the perspectives of carbon credit and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) experts on HWT carbon credit projects.

Methods

Thirteen semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with key informants from the WASH and carbon credit development sectors. The interviews explored perceptions of the two groups with respect to the procedures applied in the Gold Standard methodology for trading Voluntary Emission Reduction (VER) credits.

Results

Agreement among the WASH and carbon credit experts existed for the concept of suppressed demand and parameters in the baseline water boiling test. Key differences, however, existed. WASH experts’ responses highlighted a focus on objectively verifiable data for monitoring carbon projects while carbon credit experts called for contextualizing observed data with the need for flexibility and balancing financial viability with quality assurance.

Conclusions

Carbon credit projects have the potential to become an important financing mechanism for clean energy in low- and middle-income countries. Based on this research we recommend that more effort be placed on building consensus on the underlying assumptions for obtaining carbon credits from HWT projects, as well as the approved methods for monitoring correct and consistent use of the HWT technologies in order to support public health impacts.  相似文献

Understanding the genetic architecture of evolutionary change remains a long-standing goal in biology. In vertebrates, skeletal evolution has contributed greatly to adaptation in body form and function in response to changing ecological variables like diet and predation. Here we use genome-wide linkage mapping in threespine stickleback fish to investigate the genetic architecture of evolved changes in many armor and trophic traits. We identify >100 quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling the pattern of serially repeating skeletal elements, including gill rakers, teeth, branchial bones, jaws, median fin spines, and vertebrae. We use this large collection of QTL to address long-standing questions about the anatomical specificity, genetic dominance, and genomic clustering of loci controlling skeletal differences in evolving populations. We find that most QTL (76%) that influence serially repeating skeletal elements have anatomically regional effects. In addition, most QTL (71%) have at least partially additive effects, regardless of whether the QTL controls evolved loss or gain of skeletal elements. Finally, many QTL with high LOD scores cluster on chromosomes 4, 20, and 21. These results identify a modular system that can control highly specific aspects of skeletal form. Because of the general additivity and genomic clustering of major QTL, concerted changes in both protective armor and trophic traits may occur when sticklebacks inherit either marine or freshwater alleles at linked or possible “supergene” regions of the stickleback genome. Further study of these regions will help identify the molecular basis of both modular and coordinated changes in the vertebrate skeleton.  相似文献

The breeding biology and cone size selection of crossbills was studied mainly during 1995 to 2002 at Abernethy Forest, Scotland, an ancient native Scots pine Pinus sylvestris wood, where only a single crossbill species, the Scottish crossbill Loxia scotica, was assumed to occur and to be adapted to feed on seeds in Scots pine cones. However, three crossbill species (common Loxia curvirostra, Scottish and parrot crossbills Loxia pytyopsittacus) nested in some years, with the parrot crossbill being the most abundant. Most nests were in old large pines, with the three crossbill species not differing in their use of tree size or stand density for nesting. The mean clutch and brood sizes were 3.8 and 2.9, and their mean survivals were 86 and 74%, respectively, with no significant differences among species. The timing of breeding differed between species, with parrot crossbills breeding earliest (median date 21 March, including second attempts) and common crossbills breeding last (median date 21 April), probably in response to the differing accessibility of Scots pine seeds to these species. The difference in the time of breeding may reduce mixed mating. Crossbills foraged preferentially on trees with small cones when the cones were closed. Small cones had thinner scales than large cones, suggesting that the preference for small cones was related to higher feeding rates on these cones when cones are closed. Such a preference was also found for captive crossbills with the Scottish crossbill showing a more pronounced preference for smaller cones than the larger‐billed parrot crossbill. However, crossbills selected larger cones within trees and trees with larger cones once the cones opened in April. Such a shift occurred presumably because variation in scale thickness has little impact on seed accessibility once cones open, and larger cones have larger and more seeds. The greater ability of parrot crossbills to exploit seeds in closed Scots pine cones allowed parrot crossbills to start breeding earlier and to have young when seeds were most accessible. Only after the cones opened were the smaller‐billed common crossbills able to easily access seeds and to start breeding. The time of breeding of Scottish crossbills was intermediate between common and parrot crossbills, and they probably had an intermediate ability to exploit Scots pine cones. The reason why there were few Scottish crossbills nesting in Abernethy Forest remains a puzzle, considering that native pine wood is assumed to be the ancestral habitat to which the Scottish crossbill is adapted. The breeding season for all crossbills ended in June, when most of the seed from a given cone cohort was shed. This is when starved broods were found, not associated with bad weather.  相似文献

Cyanobacteria have a tremendous activity to adapt to environmental changes of their growth conditions. In this study, Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 was used as a model organism to focus on the alternatives of cyanobacterial energy metabolism. Glucose oxidation in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 was studied by inactivation of slr1843, encoding glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), the first enzyme of the oxidative pentose phosphate pathway (OPPP). The resulting zwf strain was not capable of glucose supported heterotrophic growth. Growth under autotrophy and under mixotrophy was similar to that of the wild-type strain, even though oxygen evolution and uptake rates of the mutant were decreased in the presence of glucose. The organic acids citrate and succinate supported photoheterotrophic growth of both WT and zwf. Proteome analysis of soluble and membrane fractions allowed identification of four growth condition-dependent proteins, pentose-5-phosphate 3-epimerase (slr1622), inorganic pyrophosphatase (sll0807), hypothetical protein (slr2032) and ammonium/methylammonium permease (sll0108) revealing details of maintenance of the cellular carbon/nitrogen/phosphate balance under different modes of growth.  相似文献
