Even in the current era of growing technology, the concentration of heavy metals present in drinking water is still not within the recommended limits as set by the regulatory authorities in different countries of the world. Drinking water contaminated with heavy metals namely; arsenic, cadmium, nickel, mercury, chromium, zinc, and lead is becoming a major health concern for public and health care professionals. Occupational exposure to heavy metals is known to occur by the utilization of these metals in various industrial processes and/or contents including color pigments and alloys. However, the predominant source resulting in measurable human exposure to heavy metals is the consumption of contaminated drinking water and the resulting health issues may include cardiovascular disorders, neuronal damage, renal injuries, and risk of cancer and diabetes. The general mechanism involved in heavy metal‐induced toxicity is recognized to be the production of reactive oxygen species resulting oxidative damage and health related adverse effects. Thus utilization of heavy metal‐contaminated water is resulting in high morbidity and mortality rates all over the world. Thereby, feeling the need to raise the concerns about contribution of different heavy metals in various health related issues, this article has discussed the global contamination of drinking water with heavy metals to assess the health hazards associated with consumption of heavy metal‐contaminated water. A relationship between exposure limits and ultimate responses produced as well as the major organs affected have been reviewed. Acute and chronic poisoning symptoms and mechanisms responsible for such toxicities have also been discussed.  相似文献

The present study investigated the role of sugar beet extract (SBE) as a bio-stimulant to ameliorate the adverse effects of drought on seed germination and growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Different concentrations of SBE (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50%) were used for priming the wheat seeds. The experiment was conducted in laboratory (PEG-8000 was used to create water stress) as well as under natural environmental conditions (using soil with 100 and 60% field capacity). Significant ameliorating effects of seed priming with SBE were recorded on different germination attributes, i.e., time to 50% emergence (E50), germination index (GI), mean emergence time (MET), germination percentage (G%), coefficient of uniformity of emergence (CUE) and germination energy (GE) under water stress. Without priming, the plants exhibited symptoms of water stress like decreased biomass, reduction in photosynthetic pigments, e.g., chlorophyll, carotenoids. Seed pre-conditioning with SBE improved the plant growth, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidants’ activities and nutrient homeostasis of plants facing water deficit and grown under well-watered conditions. The maximum increase in biomass, content of chlorophyll, carotenoids and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) was 13.4, 8.5, 11.9, 7.6, 13.6, 42.0, 19.8%, respectively, with SBE seed priming under water stress. In conclusion, SBE seed priming effectively reduced the negativities of water stress on seed germination which resulted in better plant growth in terms of enhanced biomass, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant defense mechanism and better nutrient homeostasis. Overall, the findings suggest that seed pre-conditioning with SBE as a bio-stimulant will be helpful for better crop stand establishment under low field capacity, especially in semi-arid and arid agricultural fields.  相似文献

This study investigated dream narratives as reflections of the emotional and psychological states of earthquake survivors. Dreams and dreams imagery have reportedly been affected by the emotional and psychological trauma that the dreamer goes through. Dream narratives and dream content ratings used in earlier studies were utilized in this study. Narratives and content ratings were obtained from a sample of 27 volunteer survivors of the October 8, 2005 earthquake in Pakistan (Azad Kashmir area) and 27 volunteer controls from similar demographics. Three independent raters judged the dream narratives and dream content ratings. The judges rating were highly congruent (86.05). Findings revealed that the survivor group had more vivid, unpleasant, horrifying, and hostile dreams compared with the control group. However, there were no significant gender differences. The data suggest that a closer study of dreams can be used to understand the underlying trauma for effective interventions. Levels of Mo, As, Se, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb were determined in a vegetable commonly consumed in Pakistan. Samples were collected from three different sites (Ratokala, Phularwan, and Mailowal) supplied with three different water sources. Mo and Pb in water and Mo and As in C. sativum were higher than the suggested standards at the international level. Lower bioconcentration factor and pollution load index were seen at Site-I than at other sites. A positive association was found between the rhizosphere metals and those of the vegetable at all three sites. Enrichment factor at three sites ranged from 0.28 to 10.39. The highest value of daily intake of metals was found for Fe (0.245 mg/kg/day) and of the health risk index for As (70.41) at the wastewater inundated site. It is inferred that uptake of Mo, As, Cu, Ni, and Pb through C. sativum represents a high health danger to the individuals using this vegetable.  相似文献

Accumulation of different metals and metalloids was assessed in two vegetables radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and spinach (Spinacea oleracea L.) irrigated with domestic wastewater in the peri-urban areas of Khushab City, Pakistan. In general, the metal and metalloid concentrations in radish and spinach were higher at site-II treated with sewage water than those found at site-I treated with canal water. In case of radish at both sites the levels of metals (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Mo, Cd, and Pb) were below the permissible level except those of Mn, Ni, Mo, Cd, and Pb. At both sites, the transfer factor ranged from 0.047–228.3 mg kg?1 with Cr having the highest transfer factor. The metal pollution index in soil was in the following order: As > Fe > Ni > Zn > Cd > Mo > Se > Co > Pb > Mn > Cr > Cu, respectively. While in case of spinach at both sites, the concentrations of metals and metalloids in vegetable samples irrigated with canal and sewage water were observed below the permissible level except Mn, Ni, Zn, Mo, and Pb. At both sites, the transfer factor ranged from 0.038–245.4 mg kg?1 with Cr having the highest transfer factor. The metal pollution index in soil was in the following order: Cd > Ni > Co > Se > Mn > Zn > Mo > Pb > Fe > Cr > As > Cu, respectively.  相似文献

People dwelling in different cities of the Potohar region, Pakistan, are mostly dependent on surface water for drinking and domestic use. In an attempt to make available potable, safe water, filtration plants were constructed along with dams in the Potohar region. Water samples from these filtration plants were collected and analyzed for total and faecal coliform bacteria as well as for total viable count. Results showed that bacterial indicators of faecal contamination were numerous and significantly greater than World Health Organization recommended guidelines. Accordingly, antibacterial activity of methanolic and aqueous extracts of different parts of Solanum surrattense were assessed in vitro against waterborne pathogens. Fruits exhibited more antibacterial activities at incubation at 37°C than shoots and roots, which showed lowest Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and zones of inhibition. These results suggest that plants offer a great potential for purification of drinking water that needs to be explored further because fruit extract of the aforementioned plant can be of practical use against waterborne pathogens.  相似文献

Variegin is a 32‐amino acid long thrombin inhibitory peptide isolated from the salivary gland extract of tropical bont tick Amblyomma variegatum. It was identified to be O‐glycosylated on its Thr‐14 side chain, and this glycosylated form was 14‐fold more potent than that of its non‐glycosylated form. However, as the identity of this glycosylation remained elusive, the mechanistic details underlying its functional impact are not yet known. In this report, we synthesized four different O‐glycosylated analogs of variegin bearing physiologically relevant sugars on its Thr‐14. Functional characterization of these analogs by enzyme inhibitory kinetics and surface plasmon resonance methods showed that all the synthesized glycopeptides are strong thrombin inhibitors. Structural studies by macromolecular docking identified that the sugar moiety of these peptides can potentially mediate favorable interactions with amino acids at the base of thrombin's autolysis loop. This report, for the first time, describes the impact of differential glycosylation on the function of a thrombin inhibitory peptide and tries to provide structural insights into the relevance of peptide glycosylation in thrombin inhibition. Peptoids, oligomers of N-substituted glycine, have been valuable targets for study and diverse application as peptidomimetics and as nanomaterials. Their conformational heterogeneity has made the study of peptoid structures using high-resolution analyses challenging, limiting our understanding of the physiochemical features that mediate peptoid folding. Here, we introduce a new method for the study of peptoid structure that relies on the environmentally sensitive fluorescence properties of 4-N,N-dimethylamino-1,8-naphthalimide (4-DMN). We have prepared a 4-DMN-functionalized primary amine that is compatible with the traditional submonomer peptoid synthesis methods and incorporated it sequence-specifically into 11 of 13 new peptoids. When included as a peptoid side chain modification, the fluorescence emission intensity of 4-DMN correlates with predictions of the fluorophore's local polarity within a putative structure. 4-DMN fluorescence is maximized when the fluorophore is placed in the middle of the hydrophobic face of an amphiphilic helical peptoid. When the fluorophore is placed near the peptoid terminus or on a polar face of an amphiphilic sequence, 4-DMN fluorescence is diminished. Disruption of the peptoid secondary structure or amphiphilicity also modulates 4-DMN fluorescence. The peptoids' helical secondary structures are moderately disrupted by inclusion of a 4-DMN-modified side chain as evaluated by changes in the peptoids' CD spectral features. This new method for peptoid structure evaluation should be a valuable complement to existing peptoid structural analysis tools.  相似文献

More than one third of the world’s population living in tropical and subtropical areas of the world is at risk of dengue infections and as many as 100 million people are yearly infected. This disease has reemerged during the past 20 years in the form of an epidemic. Dengue is caused by one of four related serotypes of dengue virus and often leads to severe forms of the disease, resulting commonly from secondary infections. Dengue virus is a mosquito borne virus, belongs to the family Flaviviridae and consists of a single stranded positive sense RNA genome. Like other RNA viruses it escapes defense mechanisms and neutralization attempts by mutations, which make it more resistant and adaptable to its environment. Antiviral strategies and vaccine development is thus impaired and hence to date there is no licensed vaccine available for dengue virus. Here we discuss various efforts made towards the identification of potential vaccine targets for dengue as well as various strategies employed by research groups/pharmaceutical companies towards the development of a successful dengue vaccine.  相似文献
