Methods of thin-layer, gas-liquid, and liquid chromatography were applied to the study of the effect of various concentrations of aluminum and iron salts on the contents of phospholipids, cholesterol, and fatty acids in the aquatic invertebrate Hydropsyche contubernalis L. (Trichoptera). It was found that the effect of the metals under study on lipid contents in living organisms depended on the composition of the aqueous medium and concentrations of the metals. Aluminum and iron altered the value of the cholesterol-to-phospholipid molar ratio. Cell cultures of Panax ginseng and Catharanthus roseus producing secondary metabolites were preserved in liquid nitrogen or under mineral oil for six months. The growth behaviour and the ability of the cultures to produce ginsenosides or indole alkaloids were measured after a recovery period and compared with cultures maintained by frequent subcultivation during the same period. Neither growth kinetics nor the degree of vacuolization during growth were affected by the long term preservation. Aim To investigate the general pattern of changes in species richness and diversity of vascular plants due to environmental contamination and associated habitat changes imposed by point polluters, and identify the sources of variation in the response of plant communities to industrial pollution. Location Global. Methods We collected species richness and diversity data from 86 studies that were conducted around 60 atmospheric point polluters worldwide and reported in 95 papers (published in 1953–2007). We used meta‐analysis to search for a general effect and to compare between polluter types and plant groups, and linear regression to describe the latitudinal gradient and to quantify relationships between pollution and effect size. Results Although the species richness of vascular plants generally decreased with pollution, the effects were not uniform across the studies. Polluters that cause soil acidification imposed a stronger detrimental effect on plant diversity than industries whose emissions increased soil pH. An overall adverse effect was primarily due to the contribution of non‐ferrous smelters and aluminium plants; the effects of other SO2‐emitting industries were less detrimental, albeit negative, and the effects of chemical plants, fertilizer factories and cement industries did not differ from zero. Longevity of the pollution impact only made a slight contribution to the detected variation, while adverse effects increased with increase in pollution load. Main conclusions This study is the first demonstration of geographical variation in the responses of plant communities to aerial emissions: adverse effects increased from high to low latitudes, and this pattern was explained primarily by increases in both the diversity of original (undisturbed) communities and mean summer temperatures. The latter result suggests that under a future warmer climate the existing pollution loads may become more harmful. Model calculations indicate that a detectable depauperation of plant communities is unlikely if the polluter emits < 1500 t of SO2 annually.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers from 17 Finnish populations of six taxa in the Carex flava complex were examined. Special attention was given to taxa claimed to be endemic to Fennoscandia. The meiotic counts for C. flava n = 30, C. viridula var. viridula n = 35 and var. pulchella n = 35 are in accordance with previous reports. The counts for C. jemtlandica n = 34, C. bergrothii n = 35, and C. kotilaini n = 34 are new. The hybrid C. flava × kotilaini reveals severely disturbed meiosis with many uni- and multivalents. The results are briefly discussed in relation to morphological data. Carex jemtlandica should evidently be included in C. lepidocarpa. Carex bergrothii and C. kotilaini belong to the polymorphic C. viridula , but the latter probably consitute a specific cytotype.  相似文献

A new method of preparing smears of alcohol-fixed cytologic material by using methacrylate embedding medium to make the cells adhere on plain glass slides is presented. After centrifugation, the cytologic material was mixed with Lowicryl K4M embedding medium and smeared on slides. The polymerization process was achieved by exposing the slides to ultraviolet light. The morphology in such smears was similar to that of specimens prepared by the filter technique. The methacrylate method does not have the most common disadvantages of the filter technique--the development of air bubbles over time and the visually disturbing presence of the filter.  相似文献

An alternative microbiological method for the production of malate from fumarate is presented. The yeast Dipodascus magnusii was used for this bioconversion. The optimum cell growth temperature was 28°C and the working volume 120 ml. The highest level of fumarase activity during bioconversion was achieved at a pH of 7.5 and a temperature of 37°C. These conditions were determined as optimal. Using sodium fumarate (1M), the maximum specific productivity of malic acid obtained was 1.72 g/(gDCW × h) for intact cells. In the case of ammonium fumarate, it was 2.25 g/(gDCW × h).  相似文献

During 1977-8 we measured blood pressure in 561 old people (83% of those aged 85 or more living in Tampere) and analysed their five year survival according to their blood pressure group. The subjects were divided into six groups on the basis of their blood pressures (from <120 to >200 mm Hg systolic, from <70 to >110 diastolic). The greatest mortality was observed in those in the lowest systolic and lowest diastolic groups. Mortality was least in subjects with systolic pressures of 160 mm Hg or more and diastolic pressures of 90 mm Hg or more.The most essential finding in this series of the very old was an increased mortality in the lowest blood pressure groups.  相似文献
