River damming has created fragmented landscapes in parts of the Amazon basin. The resulting decrease in forest area could directly affect amphibian species if large areas of habitat are required to guarantee the presence of specific types of breeding sites. Here, we describe the anuran assemblages on islands created by damming of the Tocantins River twenty years ago in the eastern Amazon basin. We surveyed 10 undisturbed islands varying in size from 3 to 2140 ha and located at distances of up to 6.7 km from the margin of the reservoir. We identified 32 frog species, of which 15, 14, and 3 have aquatic, semiaquatic, and terrestrial development, respectively. The number of frog species increased significantly with island area but was not affected by island distance from the margin. Species with aquatic or semiaquatic development tended to be absent from the smaller islands, regardless of the degree of isolation from the mainland. These findings emphasize the need to preserve specific microhabitats on smaller land‐bridge islands to maintain amphibian diversity in reservoir environments.  相似文献

In southeast Amazon, Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) flaviscutellata is the incriminated vector of Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis, a causative agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). The optimal methods for surveying Lu. flaviscutellata were investigated in the Bragança region, northeast Pará State, Brazil, selected for the presence of Le. amazonensis. The performances of modified Disney traps and CDC light traps were compared in four ecotopes within and around four village transects during the wet and dry seasons. The physiological age of female sand flies was estimated and natural infection by flagellates was evaluated by dissection. Disney traps were better for detecting the presence of Lu. flaviscutellata, while CDC traps performed well for detecting Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) antunesi, suspected vector of Leishmania lindenbergi. The former was more abundant during the wet season, when female flies were naturally infected with Le. amazonensis. These findings identified the environments of local transmission. In order to improve surveys of Lu. flaviscutellata as part of integrated epidemiological surveillance of CL, our recommendations include focusing vector surveys with Disney traps on forest fragments where people work, during the seasonal peak of the vector. Further field studies are required to make model‐based predictions of seasonal variations in the vectorial capacity of vector populations.  相似文献

Global extinction drivers, including habitat disturbance and climate change, are thought to affect larger species more than smaller species. However, it is unclear if such drivers interact to affect assemblage body size distributions. We asked how these two key global change drivers differentially affect the interspecific size distributions of ants, one of the most abundant and ubiquitous animal groups on earth. We also asked whether there is evidence of synergistic interactions and whether effects are related to species’ trophic roles. We generated a global dataset on ant body size from 333 local ant assemblages collected by the authors across a broad range of climates and in disturbed and undisturbed habitats. We used head length (range: 0.22–4.55 mm) as a surrogate of body size and classified species to trophic groups. We used generalized linear models to test whether body size distributions changed with climate and disturbance, independent of species richness. Our analysis yielded three key results: 1) climate and disturbance showed independent associations with body size; 2) assemblages included more small species in warmer climates and fewer large species in wet climates; and 3) both the largest and smallest species were absent from disturbed ecosystems, with predators most affected in both cases. Our results indicate that temperature, precipitation and disturbance have differing effects on the body size distributions of local communities, with no evidence of synergistic interactions. Further, both large and small predators may be vulnerable to global change, particularly through habitat disturbance.  相似文献

Aim

To evaluate the extent to which ant species richness in Neotropical savannas varies with macrogeographic variables, and to identify the potential climatic drivers of such variation.

Location

The Cerrado savanna biome of central Brazil, in a region spanning ca. 20° of latitude and 18°of longitude.

Methods

Standardized sampling of the arboreal and ground‐dwelling faunas was performed in 29 well‐preserved savanna sites using pitfall traps. Species were classified according to their habitat affinities: open‐savanna specialists, forest‐associated species or habitat generalists. We used generalized linear models to evaluate the importance of geographic (latitude, longitude and elevation) and climatic (mean temperature and three metrics of rainfall) variables as predictors of species richness.

Results

The total number of species recorded at each site varied more than twofold (from 59 to 144), and latitude was the best geographic correlate of overall species richness. However, contrary to the expected pattern, more species were found at higher than lower latitudes. This reversed latitudinal pattern of diversity occurred for both the arboreal and ground‐dwelling faunas, and for the habitat generalists and forest specialists. The savanna specialists showed a mid‐latitudinal peak in diversity. Overall, there was a significant positive association between rainfall and species richness, but the strength of this relationship varied with ant habitat affinity.

Main conclusions

The Cerrado ant fauna shows a reverse latitudinal gradient in species diversity, and this can be explained by increasing rainfall during the warmest months of the year (and therefore in plant productivity) with increasing latitude. The sensitivity of Cerrado ant diversity to declining rainfall contrasts with the high resilience to aridity of the Australian savanna ant fauna, and this reflects the contrasting evolutionary histories of these faunas. Our findings highlight the importance of historical processes as drivers of intercontinental contrasts in macroecological patterns.  相似文献

Background aims. Acute liver failure (ALF), although rare, remains a rapidly progressive and frequently fatal condition. Acetaminophen (APAP) poisoning induces a massive hepatic necrosis and often leads to death as a result of cerebral edema. Cell-based therapies are currently being investigated for liver injuries. We evaluated the therapeutic potential of transplantation of bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMC) in a mouse model of acute liver injury. Methods. ALF was induced in C57Bl/6 mice submitted to an alcoholic diet followed by fasting and injection of APAP. Mice were transplanted with 10(7) BMC obtained from enhanced green fluorescent protein (GFP) transgenic mice. Results. BMC transplantation caused a significant reduction in APAP-induced mortality. However, no significant differences in serum aminotransferase concentrations, extension of liver necrosis, number of inflammatory cells and levels of cytokines in the liver were found when BMC- and saline-injected groups were compared. Moreover, recruitment of transplanted cells to the liver was very low and no donor-derived hepatocytes were observed. Mice submitted to BMC therapy had some protection against disruption of the blood-brain barrier, despite their hyperammonemia, and serum metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 activity similar to the saline-injected group. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α concentrations were decreased in the serum of BMC-treated mice. This reduction was associated with an early increase in interleukin (IL)-10 mRNA expression in the spleen and bone marrow after BMC treatment. Conclusions. BMC transplantation protects mice submitted to high doses of APAP and is a potential candidate for ALF treatment, probably via an immunomodulatory effect on TNF-α production.  相似文献

The present work aimed to investigate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and wound healing potential of ethyl acetate fraction from Bauhinia ungulata L. (FABU) on in vitro and in vivo models. Wound healing assay using human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cell line was employed to evaluate the ability of FABU in modulating cell migration. In addition, a surgical wound model in C57BL/6 mice was used to study the healing potential of FABU incorporated into gel carbomer 940 (Carbopol®). Evaluation of lipid peroxidation, inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediator gene expression, rate of wound closure, and histological analysis were done. FABU significantly reduced the gap area in in vitro wound healing assay, 24 h after treatment. In the animal model, FABU at 0.5% topically applied once-daily for 5 days to the surgical wounds significantly reduced the lesion area. Moreover, it significantly decreased the levels of lipid peroxidation in the lesions and decreased the relative gene expression levels of IL-1β and TNF-α in the injured region. In conclusion, our study suggests that Bauhinia ungulata can effectively promote the wound healing, probably by regulating the inflammatory environment during the early stages of the process.

The possible effects of altered nuclear complement size on the poiypeptide composition and photochemical activity of chloroplasts in haploid, diploid, and tetraploid cells, of Ricinus communis L. have been evaluated. The electron transport capacity in isolated chloroplasts decreases with the increase in nuclear genome size. Both Photosystem II (DCPIP reduction) and Photosystem 1 oxygen uptake (TMPD to methyl viologen) activities were lower in plastid preparations from tetraploid individuals than in diploid and haploid cell preparations. Photosynthetic O2-evolution and CO2-fixation rates in leaf tissue from euploid individuals were also found to decrease with the increase in size of the nuclear genome. Specific activity levels of RuBP-carboxylase were observed to increase with ploidy. Electrophoretic examination of the poiypeptide composition of thylakoid membranes from haploid, diploid, and tetraploid celis revealed no difference in the relative proportions of the constituent polypeptides of these membranes. The regulation of chloroplast development and the basis for altered plastid function in the presence of altered nuclear genome size are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Cyanobacteria promote marine biofouling with significant impacts. A qualitative proteomic analysis, by LC-MS/MS, of planktonic and biofilm cells from two cyanobacteria was performed. Biofilms were formed on glass and perspex at two relevant hydrodynamic conditions for marine environments (average shear rates of 4?s?1 and 40?s?1). For both strains and surfaces, biofilm development was higher at 4?s?1. Biofilm development of Nodosilinea sp. LEGE 06145 was substantially higher than Nodosilinea sp. LEGE 06119, but no significant differences were found between surfaces. Overall, 377 and 301 different proteins were identified for Nodosilinea sp. LEGE 06145 and Nodosilinea sp. LEGE 06119. Differences in protein composition were more noticeable in biofilms formed under different hydrodynamic conditions than in those formed on different surfaces. Ribosomal and photosynthetic proteins were identified in most conditions. The characterization performed gives new insights into how shear rate and surface affect the planktonic to biofilm transition, from a structural and proteomics perspective.  相似文献
