Interspecific niche differentiation has attracted much more attention than intraspecific niche differentiation. If the intraspecific competition of invasive species is greater than the interspecific competition, it should reduce the invasive abilities of invasive species. Thus, it is important to understand how invasive species avoid or reduce the intraspecific competition. Phyllostachys edulis in southern China is more competitive than many trees. After it invades a community, it can displace other trees. In the current study, we tested whether the different aged bamboo plants (aged two to eight in two-yr increments) exhibited spatial segregation (spatial niche differentiation). The study was performed in the Ecological Station of Dagang Mountain (114°30′~114°45′E, 27°30′~27°50′N), about 200 km east from Nanchang City, Jiangxi province, China. We recorded the planar coordinates of all the plants with diameter at breast height (DBH) ?3 cm. We used the conditional probability (type-specific probability) surface to show the spatial niche differentiation. We also compared the DBH of four aged groups of bamboo plants. We used the Shapiro–Wilk test to test the normality of DBHs of each age group. If DBHs did not follow the Normal distribution, we used the Weibull function to fit these data. Then we used the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test to test whether any two aged groups of DBHs came from the same population. At the end, we used the generalized additive models (GAMs) and a local regression model (LOESS) to explore whether there is a correlation between DBHs and the corresponding planar coordinates. We found that there was significant spatial segregation in four aged groups based on the statistical test. Bamboo plants may reduce their intraspecific competition by spatial niche differentiation. We found that the DBHs approximated the Weibull distribution, and there were very weak relationships between the DBHs and the spatial locations. We concluded that different aged bamboo plants exhibited spatial segregation and may reduce their intraspecific competition by spatial niche differentiation.  相似文献

NNMT (nicotinamide N-methyltransferase, E.C. 2.1.1.1) catalyses the N-methylation of nicotinamide to 1-methylnicotinamide. NNMT expression is significantly elevated in a number of cancers, and we have previously demonstrated that NNMT expression is significantly increased in the brains of patients who have died of Parkinson's disease. To investigate the cellular effects of NNMT overexpression, we overexpressed NNMT in the SH-SY5Y cell line, a tumour-derived human dopaminergic neuroblastoma cell line with no endogenous expression of NNMT. NNMT expression significantly decreased SH-SY5Y cell death, which correlated with increased intracellular ATP content, ATP/ADP ratio and Complex I activity, and a reduction in the degradation of the NDUFS3 [NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) iron-sulfur protein 3] subunit of Complex I. These effects were replicated by incubation of SH-SY5Y cells with 1-methylnicotinamide, suggesting that 1-methylnicotinamide mediates the cellular effects of NNMT. Both NNMT expression and 1-methylnicotinamide protected SH-SY5Y cells from the toxicity of the Complex I inhibitors MPP+ (1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion) and rotenone by reversing their effects upon ATP synthesis, the ATP/ADP ratio, Complex I activity and the NDUFS3 subunit. The results of the present study raise the possibility that the increase in NNMT expression that we observed in vivo may be a stress response of the cell to the underlying pathogenic process. Furthermore, the results of the present study also raise the possibility of using inhibitors of NNMT for the treatment of cancer.  相似文献

The wall of an expanding plant cell consists primarily of cellulose microfibrils embedded in a matrix of hemicellulosic and pectic polysaccharides along with small amounts of structural and enzymatic proteins. Matrix polysaccharides are synthesized in the Golgi and exported to the cell wall by exocytosis, where they intercalate among cellulose microfibrils, which are made at the plasma membrane and directly deposited into the cell wall. Involvement of Golgi glucan synthesis in auxin-induced cell expansion has long been recognized; however, only recently have the genes corresponding to glucan synthases been identified. Biochemical purification was unsuccessful because of the labile nature and very low abundance of these enzymes. Mutational genetics also proved fruitless. Expression of candidate genes identified through gene expression profiling or comparative genomics in heterologous systems followed by functional characterization has been relatively successful. Several genes from the cellulose synthase-like (Csl) family have been found to be involved in the synthesis of various hemicellulosic glycans. The usefulness of this approach, however, is limited to those enzymes that probably do not form complexes consisting of unrelated proteins. Nonconventional approaches will continue to incrementally unravel the mechanisms of Golgi polysaccharide biosynthesis.  相似文献

Neospora caninum is now recognized as a major cause of abortion in cattle worldwide, but there is no report of N. caninum infection in cattle in India. Serum samples from 427 dairy cattle and 32 dairy water buffaloes from 7 organized dairy farms located in Punjab, India, were tested for N. caninum antibodies using a commercial monoclonal antibody-based competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Antibodies to N. caninum were found in 35 of 427 cattle from 6 of the 7 farms; 9.6% of cows, 5.1% of heifers, and 5.0% of calves were seropositive, suggesting postnatal transmission of N. caninum on the farm. Antibodies to N. caninum were found in 16 of 32 buffaloes tested from 2 dairy farms. In total, 64 cattle and 16 buffalo sera already tested by ELISA were also evaluated by an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) to verify ELISA results. Of the 64 cattle samples, 29 sera were negative by both tests and of the 35 ELISA-positive sera, 12 had IFAT titers of 1:100 or higher (1 had IFAT titer of 100, 2 had IFAT titer of 200, and 9 had IFAT titers of 400 or higher). Of the 16 buffalo sera positive by ELISA, 1 had an IFAT titer of 1:400. Thus, antibodies to N. caninum were demonstrated in cattle sera by 2 serologic methods. To our knowledge this is the first report of N. caninum infection in cattle and buffaloes in India.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to determine the effect of ivermectin administration on cell mediated (CMI) and humoral immunity (HI) of rabbits. CMI against dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) and sheep red blood cells (SRBC) in rabbits was determined by delayed-type hypersensitivity and macrophage engulfment assay (MEA), respectively; whereas, HI to Pasteurella multocida B2 vaccine and SRBC was determined by indirect haemagglutination assay (IHA) and Jerne hemolytic plaque formation assay (JHPFA), respectively. The rabbits were divided into four major groups (A through D) each subdivided into four sub-groups (1 through 4). Rabbits of group A served as vehicle control while those of groups B, C and D were treated with ivermectin at the dose rates of 200 microg/kg, 400 microg/kg and 600 microg/kg b.w., respectively. Cellular immunity was determined in sub-groups 1 and 2 through DNCB and MEA, respectively while HI was determined in sub-groups 3 and 4 through IHA and JHPFA, respectively. The skin sensitivity to DNCB at 24 and 48 h and macrophage engulfment of SRBC were highest (P>0.05) in rabbits administered with 600 microg/kg b.w. The highest geometric mean titers (14.00+/-0.31) and number of plaque forming units (1860+/-0.75) were found in rabbits that received ivermectin at a dose of 600 microg/kg b.w. followed, in order by the groups that received 400 microg/kg, 200 microg/kg b.w. and controls. Leukocyte counts were significantly higher in ivermectin-treated groups (C and D) than group A (vehicle control) and B (ivermectin at the rate of 200 microg/kg). A graded dose immune response suggested an immunopotentiating effect of ivermectin at higher doses.  相似文献

Introduction

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is characterized by high morbidity and mortality. Lung computed tomography parameters, individually or as part of a composite index, may provide more prognostic information than pulmonary function tests alone.

Aim

To investigate the prognostic value of emphysema score and pulmonary artery measurements compared with lung function parameters in COPD and construct a prognostic index using a contingent staging approach.

Material-Methods

Predictors of mortality were assessed in COPD outpatients whose lung computed tomography, spirometry, lung volumes and gas transfer data were collected prospectively in a clinical database. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard analysis models with bootstrap techniques were used.

Results

169 patients were included (59.8% male, 61.1 years old; Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second % predicted: 40.5±19.2). 20.1% died; mean survival was 115.4 months. Age (HR = 1.098, 95% Cl = 1.04–1.252) and emphysema score (HR = 1.034, 95% CI = 1.007–1.07) were the only independent predictors of mortality. Pulmonary artery dimensions were not associated with survival. An emphysema score of 55% was chosen as the optimal threshold and 30% and 65% as suboptimals. Where emphysema score was between 30% and 65% (intermediate risk) the optimal lung volume threshold, a functional residual capacity of 210% predicted, was applied. This contingent staging approach separated patients with an intermediate risk based on emphysema score alone into high risk (Functional Residual Capacity ≥210% predicted) or low risk (Functional Residual Capacity <210% predicted). This approach was more discriminatory for survival (HR = 3.123; 95% CI = 1.094–10.412) than either individual component alone.

Conclusion

Although to an extent limited by the small sample size, this preliminary study indicates that the composite Emphysema score-Functional Residual Capacity index might provide a better separation of high and low risk patients with COPD, than other individual predictors alone.  相似文献

In the context of ethno botanical importance with no phytochemical investigations, Mussaenda roxburghii have been investigated to explore it's phytoconstituents and studies of their antibiofilm activity. Four compounds have been isolated from the aerial parts of this plant and were characterized as 2α,3β,19α,23‐tetrahydroxyurs‐12‐en‐28‐oic acid ( 1 ), β‐sitosterol glucoside ( 4 ), lupeol palmitate ( 5 ), and myoinositol ( 6 ). All these compounds were tested for antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Compound 1 exhibited three times more antibiofilm activity with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) at 0.74 mm compared to that of streptomycin. Molecular docking studies exhibited a very high binding affinity of 1 with P. aeruginosa quorum sensing proteins and motility associated proteins viz. LasR and PilB, PilY1, PilT, respectively. Compound 1 was also found to be non‐cytotoxic against sheep RBC and murine peritoneal macrophages at selected sub‐MIC doses.  相似文献
