The cerebral cortex utilizes spatiotemporal continuity in the world to help build invariant representations. In vision, these
might be representations of objects. The temporal continuity typical of objects has been used in an associative learning rule
with a short-term memory trace to help build invariant object representations. In this paper, we show that spatial continuity
can also provide a basis for helping a system to self-organize invariant representations. We introduce a new learning paradigm
“continuous transformation learning” which operates by mapping spatially similar input patterns to the same postsynaptic neurons
in a competitive learning system. As the inputs move through the space of possible continuous transforms (e.g. translation,
rotation, etc.), the active synapses are modified onto the set of postsynaptic neurons. Because other transforms of the same
stimulus overlap with previously learned exemplars, a common set of postsynaptic neurons is activated by the new transforms,
and learning of the new active inputs onto the same postsynaptic neurons is facilitated. We demonstrate that a hierarchical
model of cortical processing in the ventral visual system can be trained with continuous transform learning, and highlight
differences in the learning of invariant representations to those achieved by trace learning. 相似文献

The Mercury Islands tusked weta, Motuweta isolata (Orthoptera: Anostostomatidae), survived only on 13 ha Ahu or Middle Island, a mammal-free island in the Mercury Group, New Zealand. Between 2000 and 2009, 567 individuals were translocated in nine releases to six nearby islands from which mammals had been removed. These translocations occurred to reduce the chance of accidental extinction of the Middle Island population of only a few hundred adults and to contribute to the restoration of the other islands. All translocated insects originated from the captive-bred progeny of one male and two females collected from Middle Island between 1998 and 2001. Their establishment on Double and Red Mercury Islands, after their releases in 2000 and 2001 respectively, was confirmed by searching plots, and by using footprint tracking tunnels on Red Mercury Island between 2008 and 2012. Tracking tunnels provided better data and proved more cost effective than searching plots for detecting large tusked weta. Tracking tunnels demonstrated that the population on Red Mercury expanded outwards from the release sites by 50–100 m each year between 2009 and 2012. These weta are now estimated to be present over more than half the Island. Tusked weta have also survived on Stanley, Korapuki and Ohinau Islands after releases in 2007, but they remain within 100 m of the release sites. No confirmed progeny of the weta released on Cuvier Island in 2008 and 2011 were detected. No tusked weta were detected on Middle Island using tracking tunnels on eight occasions between 2009 and 2012, suggesting this species is likely to be locally extinct. We report here on direct evidence for the intensive consumption of marine foods by anatomically modern humans at approximately 12,000 years ago. We undertook isotopic analysis of bone collagen from three humans, dating to the late Palaeolithic, from the site of Kendrick's Cave in North Wales, UK. The isotopic measurements of their bone collagen indicated that ca. 30% of their dietary protein was from marine sources, which we interpret as likely being high trophic level marine organisms such as marine mammals. This indicates that towards the end of the Pleistocene modern humans were pursuing a hunting strategy that incorporated both marine and terrestrial mammals. This is the first occurrence of the intensive use of marine resources, specifically marine mammals, that becomes even more pronounced in the subsequent Mesolithic period. 相似文献

As a part of the goal to determine the total sequence of Rhodospirillum rubrum ribulosebisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, the cyanogen bromide fragments were fractionated and sequenced (or partially sequenced). Twelve of the anticipated 14 peptides were obtained in highly purified form. The other two peptides were located, respectively, within a trytophanyl cleavage product (which overlapped with four CNBr fragments) and within an active-site peptide characterized earlier (which overlapped with three CNBr fragments). These overlaps coupled with amino and carboxyl terminal sequence information of the intact subunit and the availability of the sequence of the corresponding enzyme from higher plants permitted alignment of all fragments. Eight CNBr peptides were sequenced completely; four of the CNBr peptides consisted of more than 80 residues and were only partially sequenced as permitted by direct Edman degradation. Of the approximate 475 residues per subunit, 339 were placed in sequence. The lack of extensive conservation of primary structure between R. rubrum and higher plant carboxylases permits the tentative identifications of those regions likely to be functionally important. 相似文献

Unheated spores of nonproteolytic Clostridium botulinum were able to lead to growth in sterile deoxygenated turnip, spring green, helda bean, broccoli, or potato juice, although the probability of growth was low and the time to growth was longer than the time to growth in culture media. With all five vegetable juices tested, the probability of growth increased when spores were inoculated into the juice and then heated for 2 min in a water bath at 80 degrees C. The probability of growth was greater in bean or broccoli juice than in culture media following 10 min of heat treatment in these media. Growth was prevented by heat treatment of spores in vegetable juices or culture media at 80 degrees C for 100 min. We show for the first time that adding heat-treated vegetable juice to culture media can increase the number of heat-damaged spores of C. botulinum that can lead to colony formation. 相似文献

Rat-derived Pneumocystis carinii contains a major antigen complex of 45–55 kDa. The fusion protein of a cDNA encoding the 3′ portion of the 55 kDa antigen, which had previously been shown to be recognized by serum antibodies of exposed subjects, was investigated for its ability to stimulate a cellular immune response. Rats exposed to P. carinii via the environment exhibited a vigorous proliferative response to the antigen whereas unexposed rats did not. The full-length cDNA for a 55 kDa antigen was cloned and found to contain a 1245 bp open reading frame capable of encoding a 414-amino-acid peptide. The gene encoding this protein contained a single 39 bp intron and transcribed a 1.45 kb RNA message. The cloning and characterization of the 55 kDa antigen gene will allow production of the specific immunological reagents necessary to characterize this molecule and study its role in the biology and pathogenesis of P. carinii. 相似文献
