Population growth and fitness are typically most sensitive to adult survival in long‐lived species, but variation in recruitment often explains most of the variation in fitness, as past selection has canalized adult survival. Estimating juvenile survival until age of independence has proven challenging, because marking individuals in this age class may directly affect survival. For Greater Sage‐grouse, uniquely marking juveniles in the first days of life likely results in adverse effects to survival, detection of juveniles is not perfect, and females adopt juveniles from other parents. These challenges are encountered by researchers studying avian and mammalian species with similar life histories, yet methods do not exist that explicitly estimate all these components of the recruitment process. We propose a novel data collection method and demographic model to simultaneously estimate rates of detection, survival, and adoption of juvenile individuals. Using multiple cameras to film the beginning of juvenile activity on specific days, we obtained counts of juveniles associated with marked females. Increases of juveniles to broods provided information that enabled us to estimate rates of adoption that can be applied at the population level. Losses from broods informed apparent survival. These losses could be attributed to death, or they could be chicks that were adopted by other females. We found evidence that apparent survival of juveniles was influenced by localized weather patterns when chicks were young. Similarly, we found that young chicks were more susceptible to the adverse effect of attending females being flushed by an observer. Both of these patterns diminished quickly as chicks aged. We provide the first‐ever estimates of interval‐specific adoption rates. Our results suggest that researchers should be cautious when designing studies to estimate juvenile survival. The abundance of benthic macroinvertebrate taxa and the relative abundance of zooplankton taxa were compared with the diet of bream, tench. perch and roach from two gravel pit lakes during May-July 1986 and 1987. Significant food preferences were demonstrated between species and between lakes. Chironomid pupae dominated the macroinvertebrate diet of perch, roach, ate predominantly either Spirogyra sp. (St Peters Lake) or Daphniu hyalina (Main Lake).
The Main Lake, bream fed largely upon chironomid larvae and the bivalve Sphuerium but in St Peters Lake they positively selected a variety of less abundant benthic invertebrate taxa. Bream switched from benthos to zooplankton in the Main Lake in 1986. Tench ate large numbers of Aselhs and showed positive selection of various macroinvertebrate prey in St Peters but ate D. hjulim in Main Lake. Tropic overlap for chironomids and other macroinvertebrate prey was demonstrated between perch, bream and tench, and potentially with wildfowl which used the gravel pits for breeding and wintering. 相似文献

Northern permafrost soils contain important carbon stocks. Here we report the long-term response of carbon stocks in high Arctic dwarf shrub tundra to short-term, low-level nutrient enrichment. Twenty years after experimental nitrogen addition, carbon stocks in vegetation and organic soil had almost halved. In contrast, where phosphorus was added with nitrogen, carbon storage increased by more than 50%. These responses were explained by changes in the depths of the moss and organic soil layers. Nitrogen apparently stimulated decomposition, reducing carbon stocks, whilst phosphorus and nitrogen co-stimulated moss productivity, increasing organic matter accumulation. The altered structure of moss and soil layers changed soil thermal regimes, which may further influence decomposition of soil carbon. If climate warming increases phosphorus availability, any increases in nitrogen enrichment from soil warming or expanding human activity in the Arctic may result in increased carbon sequestration. Where phosphorus is limiting in tundra areas, however, nitrogen enrichment may result in carbon loss. 相似文献

The sequence relationships of a range of cultivable and noncultivable human and animal rotaviruses were investigated by hybridization of rotavirus cDNA probes to genomic RNAs immobilized on diazobenzyloxymethyl paper. Under conditions of low stringency (34% base mismatch tolerated) most genome segments exhibited partial homology except for genes 4 and 5. In contrast, under more stringent conditions of hybridization in which no more than 8% base mismatch was tolerated, few segments exhibited homology. Generally the human and animal rotaviruses were found to possess distinct nucleic acid sequences that exhibit only a low order of sequence relatedness. These results are consistent with the notion that both cumulative changes in nucleic acid sequences and the interchange of segments may be involved in the evolution of distinct rotavirus strains. 相似文献

After 20 years'' experience throughout the Western world the effectiveness of screening newborns for congenital dislocation of the hip remains controversial. Is the clinical test for hip instability (the Ortolani or "jump" sing) reliable? Are other equally important physical signs frequently missed by inexperienced examiners? Do some dislocations develop after the newborn period when no abnormality was identifiable during the first week of life? In Vancouver, screening for this condition was initiated in 1964. In the 5-year period 1967-1971 an orthopedic surgeon screened all the infants in the newborn nursery of one hospital, while orthopedic residents screened all those at another hospital. Their rates of neonatal and late (after the first month of lfe) diagnosis of congenital hip abnormalities were, respectively, 6 and 0.3/100 lives births for the surgeon and 5 and 0.8/1000 for the residents. In contrast, at 20 hospitals that did not have regular screenign the average rates were 1.2 and 1.4. Systematic screening the early treatment have great potential for reducing the need for immobilization and surgical treatment of infants who congenital dislocation of the hip is missed in the first month of life. it may also prevent the arthritic sequelae that in adult life afflict many patients whose treatment was begun after the newborn period. 相似文献

The inactivation of glycosidases by 2-deoxy-2-fluoroglycosides has been shown previously to occur via the accumulation of a covalent 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl enzyme intermediate [Withers, S. G., & Street, I. P. (1988) J. Am. Chem. Soc. 110, 8551]. Further characterization of this process with Agrobacterium beta-glucosidase is described, and the range of glycosides engaging in this behavior is examined. Inactivation is shown to be accompanied by the release of a stoichiometric "burst" of aglycon, thereby providing a new class of active site titration agents for glycosidases. The rate of inactivation is shown to be very strongly dependent on the leaving group ability of the aglycon, the slowest inactivator studied (p-nitrophenyl2-deoxy-2-fluoro-beta-D-glucopyranoside) yielding only partial inactivation due to turnover of the intermediate becoming competitive with its formation. Such turnover of the intermediate is shown to be greatly accelerated by transglycosylation to a suitable glycoside bound in the aglycon site, resulting in the release of a disaccharide product which was isolated and characterized. The pH dependences of both the formation and the hydrolysis of the 2-deoxy-2-fluoroglycosyl-enzyme closely resemble those of each step for normal catalysis, indicating that the same catalytic groups are involved in both processes. A model system for the partial "steady-state" inactivation observed previously [Withers, S. G., Rupitz, K., & Street, I. P. (1988) J. Biol. 1. Each of five triorganotin and five triorganolead compounds was shown to perturb mithochondrial functions in three different ways. One is dependent and two are independent of Cl- in the medium. 2. Structure-activity relationships for the three interactions are described, and compounds suitable as tools for the separate study of each process are defined. 3. In a Cl- -containing medium trimethyltin, triethyltin, trimethyl-lead, triethyl-lead and tri-n-propyl-lead all produce the same maximum rate of ATP hydrolysis and O2 uptake; this rate is much less than that produced by uncoupling agents such as 2,4-dinitrophenol. 4. Increase in ATP hydrolysis and O2 uptake are measures on energy ultilization when triogranotin and triorganolead compounds bring about an exchange of external C1- for intramitochondrial OH- ions. Possible rate-limiting steps in this process are discussed. 5. In a C1- -containing medium ATP synthesis linked to the oxidation of beta-hydroxybutyrate or reduced cytochrone c is less inhibited by triethyltin or triethyl-lead than is ATP synthesis linked to the oxidation of succinate, pyruvate or L-glutamate. 6. The inhibition of ATP synthesis linked to the oxidation of both beta-hydroxybutyrate and reduced cytochrome c consists of two processes: one is a limited uncoupling and is C1- -dependent and the other is a C1- -independent inhibition of the energy-conservation system. 7. AIMS: To study the relationships between serum IGF-1, IGFBP-3 and IGFBP-2 and interleukin (IL)-1beta and IL-6 in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). METHODS: Thirty-seven patients (18 males, 19 females, aged 8.8-26.1 years) with IBD (Crohn's disease, CD, n = 17, and ulcerative colitis, UC, n = 20) were studied. Patients were in relapse or remission according to established criteria. Serum IGF-1, IGFBP-3, IGFBP-2, IL-1beta and IL-6 levels were determined in patients and 15 healthy controls (aged 8.2-19.0 years). RESULTS: IGF-1 levels were lower in patients with CD in relapse compared with controls (p < 0.05). IGFBP-2 levels were higher in CD in relapse compared with other groups (all p < 0.05). In CD and UC patients (n = 37), IGF-1 levels were inversely correlated with the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP). IGFBP-2 levels correlated positively with ESR and IL-1beta. IL-6 levels correlated positively with ESR and CRP. IL-1beta levels were elevated in CD in relapse compared to controls (p < 0.05) and were higher in UC in relapse than in other groups (all p < 0.05). In combined CD/UC patients in relapse (n = 20), IL-1beta levels were higher (p < 0.05) in patients with recto-sigmoiditis (n = 5) than in other patients. CONCLUSIONS: IGF-1, IGFBP-2 levels were related to IL levels, disease activity and anatomical distribution, consistent with active inflammation modifying the IGF-IGFBP system, possibly relevant to disturbance of growth. 相似文献

Changes in protein stability can be achieved by making substitutions that increase or decrease the available conformations of the unfolded protein without altering the conformational freedom of the folded protein. Matthews and coworkers (1987) proposed that proline to alanine (P --> A) substitution would achieve this type of entropic destabilization. By comparing the Ramachandran area associated with alanine and proline residues, Matthews et al. estimated the unfolding entropy change resulting from P --> A substitution to be 4.8 cal mol(-1) K(-1). Although such an entropy difference would produce a substantial free energy change, accurately resolving such free energy changes into entropic and enthalpic components has been difficult. Here, we attempt to quantify the unfolding entropy change produced by P --> A substitution by amplifying the effect through multiple substitutions, and by decreasing the uncertainty in determining the unfolding entropy. Variants of a repeat protein, the Drosophila Notch ankyrin domain, were constructed with a varying number of P --> A substitutions at structurally conserved positions. Unfolding entropy values of the variants were determined from free energy measurements taken over a common temperature range using chemical denaturation. Our findings confirm the prediction that increasing the number of proline residues present in similar local environments increases the unfolding entropy. The average value of this increase in unfolding entropy is 7.7 +/- 4.2 cal mol(-1) K(-1), which is within error of the value estimated by Matthews et al. (1987). 相似文献
