Summary The dynamic behavior of CO2 uptake in sunflower plants was measured in a computer controlled apparatus and identified systematically using spectral analysis.To obtain impulse responses of net CO2 uptake, power spectra were estimated by the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method. FFT was done by computing 512 separate data points sampled at one minute intervals. From examination of coherency, it was determined that dynamic behavior of CO2 uptake could be estimated by linear filtering based on impulse response as affected by the light in changes slower than 0.08 cycle min-1. This suggests that other dynamic phenomena in physiological ecology could be estimated effectively by using advanced system theory involving many algorithms. 相似文献

Arterial-venous magnesium differences were examined in mongrel dogs stressed with reversible and lethal hypovolemia. Increases in serum Mg with hemorrhage have long been known to occur in both humans and animals, yet, increased blood Mg levels have not been viewed as an indicator of the irreversible shock state. Saturation analysis of the binding of [3H]dexamethasone [( 3H]DEX) to ammonium sulfate precipitates (ASPs) confirmed the presence of a limited-capacity, high-affinity binder in human adipose tissue cytosols. Various non-radioactive steroids competed with [3H]DEX for binding to the ASPs in the following sequence: dexamethasone (DEX) approximately equal to triamcinolone acetonide (TA) greater than progesterone (P) much greater than estradiol (E2). The steroid specificity of the binder precipitated by AS was consistent with the specificities reported for glucocorticoid receptors in a number of systems. In order to investigate possible regional differences, glucocorticoid binding to ASPs derived from adipose tissues removed from two different sites in the same subject was quantitated. ASPs of human omental adipose tissue bound significantly more [3H]DEX than did similar preparations of subcutaneous adipose tissue from the abdominal wall (116 +/- 32 vs. 50 +/- 22 fmol/mg protein; mean +/- SD; p less than 0.02). The findings are consistent with reports from other laboratories suggesting that intra-abdominal fat is more responsive to glucocorticoids than is subcutaneous adipose tissue. 相似文献

Recently, tomatoes have been implicated as a primary vehicle in food-borne outbreaks of Salmonella enterica serovar Newport and other Salmonella serovars. Long-term intervention measures to reduce Salmonella prevalence on tomatoes remain elusive for growing and postharvest environments. A naturally occurring bacterium identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing as Paenibacillus alvei was isolated epiphytically from plants native to the Virginia Eastern Shore tomato-growing region. After initial antimicrobial activity screening against Salmonella and 10 other bacterial pathogens associated with the human food supply, strain TS-15 was further used to challenge an attenuated strain of S. Newport on inoculated fruits, leaves, and blossoms of tomato plants in an insect-screened high tunnel with a split-plot design. Survival of Salmonella after inoculation was measured for groups with and those without the antagonist at days 0, 1, 2, and 3 and either day 5 for blossoms or day 6 for fruits and leaves. Strain TS-15 exhibited broad-range antimicrobial activity against both major food-borne pathogens and major bacterial phytopathogens of tomato. After P. alvei strain TS-15 was applied onto the fruits, leaves, and blossoms of tomato plants, the concentration of S. Newport declined significantly (P ≤ 0.05) compared with controls. Astonishingly, >90% of the plants had no detectable levels of Salmonella by day 5 for blossoms. The naturally occurring antagonist strain TS-15 is highly effective in reducing the carriage of Salmonella Newport on whole tomato plants. The application of P. alvei strain TS-15 is a promising approach for reducing the risk of Salmonella contamination during tomato production. 相似文献
