In primate populations, endoparasite species richness and prevalence are associated with host traits such as reproductive and social status, age, sex, host population density, and environmental factors such as humidity. We analyzed the species richness and prevalence of intestinal parasites in two sympatric primate populations, one of Alouatta palliata and one of Ateles geoffroyi, found in a tropical dry forest in Costa Rica. We identified three species of intestinal parasites (Controrchis sp., Trypanoxyuris sp., and Strongyloides sp.) in these two primate species. We did not find any differences in species richness between the primate species. However, the prevalences of Controrchis sp. and Trypanoxyuris sp. were higher in Alouatta palliata. Similarly, males and lactating females of Alouatta palliata showed higher Controrchis sp. prevalences. We did not observe any differences in parasite richness and prevalence between seasons. Infectious diseases in endangered primate populations must be considered in conservation strategies, especially when defining protected areas. 相似文献
Magnetic polarity stratigraphies from ODP Leg 177 ‘high resolution’ sites indicate Brunhes sedimentation rates in the 12–25 cm/kyr range, with a trend of decreasing sedimentation rates with increasing age. Magnetite is the principal remanence-carrying mineral. Downcore alteration of magnetite and authigenic growth of iron sulfides introduces a high coercivity diagenetic remanence carrier (pyrrhotite). The change in pore water sulfate with depth in the sediment tends to be in step with the decrease in magnetization intensity, indicating the link between sulfate reduction and magnetite dissolution. Shipboard pass-through magnetometer data are generally very noisy due to a combination of weak magnetization intensities, drilling-related core deformation, and the influence of authigenic iron sulfides. Post-cruise progressive demagnetization of discrete samples aids the magnetostratigraphic interpretation, as these measurements are less influenced by low magnetization intensities and drilling-related deformation. The magnetostratigraphic interpretations provide much-needed calibration for biostratigraphic events in the high latitude southern oceans. Apart from the ODP Hole 745B (Kerguelen Plateau), published Plio-Pleistocene magnetostratigraphies from ODP sites in the Southern Ocean are poorly constrained. Tropical dry forests (TDFs) are highly endangered tropical ecosystems being replaced by a complex mosaic of patches of different successional stages, agricultural fields and pasturelands. In this context, it is urgent to understand how taxa playing critical ecosystem roles respond to habitat modification. Because Phyllostomid bats provide important ecosystem services (e.g. facilitate gene flow among plant populations and promote forest regeneration), in this study we aimed to identify potential patterns on their response to TDF transformation in sites representing four different successional stages (initial, early, intermediate and late) in three Neotropical regions: México, Venezuela and Brazil. We evaluated bat occurrence at the species, ensemble (abundance) and assemblage level (species richness and composition, guild composition). We also evaluated how bat occurrence was modulated by the marked seasonality of TDFs. In general, we found high seasonal and regional specificities in phyllostomid occurrence, driven by specificities at species and guild levels. For example, highest frugivore abundance occurred in the early stage of the moistest TDF, while highest nectarivore abundance occurred in the same stage of the driest TDF. The high regional specificity of phyllostomid responses could arise from: (1) the distinctive environmental conditions of each region, (2) the specific behavior and ecological requirements of the regional bat species, (3) the composition, structure and phenological patterns of plant assemblages in the different stages, and (4) the regional landscape composition and configuration. We conclude that, in tropical seasonal environments, it is imperative to perform long-term studies considering seasonal variations in environmental conditions and plant phenology, as well as the role of landscape attributes. This approach will allow us to identify potential patterns in bat responses to habitat modification, which constitute an invaluable tool for not only bat biodiversity conservation but also for the conservation of the key ecological processes they provide. 相似文献
We compared phenological patterns of tree species of the family Bombacaceae in three seasonal forests in Mexico and Costa Rica whose dry seasons vary in duration and intensity. The objectives were to (1) determine intraspecific variation in phenology between sites in different geographic locations with different precipitation regimes, (2) compare interspecific phenological patterns within sites during one year, and (3) document seasonal pollinator use of floral resources at one site in relation to the flowering phenology of these species. To determine the sequence of phenological events in trees of the family Bombacaceae across three study sites, phenology of marked individuals was recorded every 2 wk from September 2000 through August 2001 for six species. To estimate the importance of bombacaceous species in the diet of nectarivorous bats, pollen samples were collected from the bodies or feces of bats once every 2 wk during flowering. Our study suggests that phenological patterns of the Bombacaceae family in Neotropical dry forests are mainly constrained by phylogenetic membership and adaptive selective pressures associated with competition for pollinators. Abiotic factors related to precipitation and soil water content appear to be regulating leaf flushing and abscission, but the principal causes of flowering are related to ultimate factors associated with competition for pollinators. Although tropical wet forests are generally more diverse than dry forests for many faunal groups, few studies have compared bat diversity among dry forests. I compared ground level phyllostomid bat community structure between two tropical dry forests with different precipitation regimes. Parque National Palo Verde in northwestern Costa Rica represents one of the wettest tropical dry forests (rainfall 1.5 m/yr), whereas the Chamela‐Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve on the Pacific coast of central Mexico represents one of the driest (750 mm/yr). Mist net sampling was conducted at the two study sites to compare changes in ground level phyllostomid bat community structure between regions and seasons. Palo Verde was more diverse than Chamela and phyllostomid species showed low similarity between sites (Classic Jaccard = 0.263). The distinct phyllostomid communities observed at these two dry forest sites demonstrates that variants of tropical dry forest can be sufficiently different in structure and composition to affect phyllostomid communities. At both dry forest sites, abundance of the two most common foraging guilds (frugivores and nectarivores) differed between seasons, with greatest numbers of individuals captured coinciding with highest chiropterophilic resource abundance. 相似文献
Nine human tumor cell lines derived from both epithelial and mesenchymal tumors exhibited either an anchorage-independent growth non-tumorigenic phenotype or an anchorage-independent tumorigenic phenotype. Transformed epithelial cell lines with the non-tumorigenic phenotype could be converted to a progressively growing tumor phenotype following treatment with either methylmethane sulfonate (MMS) or N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). In contrast, sarcoma derived cell lines with a non-tumorigenic phenotype could be converted to a progressively growing tumor phenotype only with MNNG. SV40 immortalized HET-1A non-tumorigenic phenotype cells could be converted to a progressively growing tumorigenic phenotype, infrequently, when treated with MNNG, but not MMS. Progressively growing tumors produced by either MMS or MNNG treated non-tumorigenic phenotypes exhibited metastatic potential in nude mice. Chemically treated HET-1A cells acquired the ability to produce tumor in mice but the tumor did not exhibit metastatic potential. In contrast, populations of tumorigenic cells were not rendered more biologically aggressive after treatment with either MMS or MNNG; i.e., the latency period for tumor development was not accelerated and the tumors did not exhibit metastatic potential. These results suggest that the biological effects of MMS and MNNG on non-tumorigenic, tumorigenic and immortalized cell lines are phenotype specific.Abbreviations AIG

The ability of acrylonitrile to induce cytotoxicity, sister-chromatid exchanges and DNA single-strand breaks was studied in cultured human bronchial epithelial cells. The toxic effect as determined by cloning efficiency was observed at a dose of 600 micrograms/ml but not at doses of both 150 and 300 micrograms/ml. The frequency of sister-chromatid exchange in untreated cells was 3.7 +/- 1.3 per cell. In contrast, cells treated with acrylonitrile at 150 and 300 micrograms/ml exhibited 6.6 +/- 1.3 and 10.7 +/- 1.7 sister-chromatid exchanges per metaphase, respectively. DNA single-strand breaks were induced by acrylonitrile at dose levels of 200 and 500 micrograms/ml. The genotoxic effects on human bronchial epithelial cells that were directly exposed to acrylonitrile are of interest in relation to evidence for the higher lung cancer incidence of acrylonitrile workers in epidemiological studies. 相似文献
A survey has been made of the properties of corn mitochondria in swelling and contraction. The mitochondria swell spontaneously in KCl but not in sucrose. Aged mitochondria will swell rapidly in sucrose if treated with citrate or EDTA. Swelling does not impair oxidative phosphorylation if bovine serum albumin is present.
Contraction can be maintained or initiated with ATP + Mg or an oxidizable substrate, contraction being more rapid with the substrate. Magnesium is not required for substrate powered contraction. Contraction powered by ATP is accompanied by the release of phosphate. Oligomycin inhibits both ATP-powered contraction and the release of phosphate. However, it does not affect substrate-powered contraction. Substrate powered contraction is inhibited by electron-transport inhibitors. The uncoupler, carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenyl hydrazone, accelerates swelling and inhibits both ATP-and substrate-powered contraction. However, the concentrations required are well in excess of those required to produce uncoupling and to accelerate adenosine triphosphatase; the concentrations required inhibit respiration in a phosphorylating medium.
Phosphate is a very effective inhibitor of succinate-powered contraction. Neither oligomycin nor Mg affects the phosphate inhibition. Phosphate is less inhibitory with the ATP-powered contraction.
The results are discussed in terms of a hypothesis that contraction is associated with a nonphosphorylated high energy intermediate of oxidative phosphorylation.
Summary The amino acid requirements of strain L-M mouse cells grown in a chemically defined medium (2×Eagle) containing only the 13
essential amino acids (EAA) were investigated. Medium and acid hydrolysate samples were analyzed for amino acid content by
the method of ion exchange chromatography. The extent of utilization of the EAA differed;e.g. after 120 hr of cell growth without medium change, glutamine was exhausted from the medium; methionine, leucine, isoleucine,
cystine, arginine, and valine were depleted 60 to 80%; other EAA were used to lesser extents. Although the EAA were used in
excess of their requirements for protein synthesis, a correlation could generally be made between utilization and protein
amino acid composition.
Glutamine appeared to be, a growth-limiting factor. Use of U-14C-labeled glutamine indicated that over one-half of the metabolized glutamine was converted to carbon dioxide, 17% to cell
material, and 15% was extracted from the amino acid pools.
Nonessential amino acids (NEAA), viz. alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, proline, and serine, were released into
the medium during growth, and some were reutilized. Exogenous provision of these did not improve cell growth. In contrast
to the other NEAA, only serine showed net utilization when provided exogenously. When glutamic acid largely replaced the glutamine
in the medium, it exerted a sparing effect on the glutamine requirement for protein synthesis. Suggestions are given for the
improvement of Eagle medium for cell growth.
