Background  

Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the most common infections worldwide and is associated with gastric cancer and peptic ulcer. Bacterial virulence factors such as CagA have been shown to increase the risk of both diseases. Studies have suggested a causal role for CagA EPIYA polymorphisms in gastric carcinogenesis, and it has been shown to be geographically diverse. We studied associations between H. pylori CagA EPIYA patterns and gastric cancer and duodenal ulcer, in an ethnically admixed Western population from Brazil. CagA EPIYA was determined by PCR and confirmed by sequencing. A total of 436 patients were included, being 188 with gastric cancer, 112 with duodenal ulcer and 136 with gastritis.  相似文献

Background

Motion sickness is characterized by subjective symptoms that include dizziness and nausea. Studies have shown that subjective symptoms of motion sickness are preceded by differences in standing body sway between those who experience the symptoms and those who are not. Boxers often report dizziness and nausea immediately after bouts. We predicted that pre-bout standing body sway would differ between boxers who experienced post-bout motion sickness and those who did not.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We collected data on standing body sway before bouts. During measurement of body sway participants performed two visual tasks. In addition, we varied stance width (the distance between the heels). Postural testing was conducted separately before and after participants'' regular warm-up routines. After bouts, we collected self-reports of motion sickness incidence and symptoms. Results revealed that standing body sway was greater after warm-up than before warm-up, and that wider stance width was associated with reduced sway. Eight of 15 amateur boxers reported motion sickness after a bout. Two statistically significant interactions revealed that standing body sway before bouts differed between participants who reported post-bout motion sickness and those who did not.

Conclusions/Significance

The results suggest that susceptibility to motion sickness in boxers may be manifested in characteristic patterns of body sway. It may be possible to use pre-bout data on postural sway to predict susceptibility to post-bout motion sickness.  相似文献

Summary Growing and resting cells of the yeast Trigonopsis variabilis (DSM 70714) can be used for the enantioselective reduction of the organosilicon compound acetyldimethylphenylsilane (1) to give optically active (R)-(1-hydroxyethyl)dimethylphenylsilane [(R)-2] in good yields. The enantiomeric purity of the isolated product was determined to be 62–86% ee depending on the substrate concentration used. Both substrate and product caused an inhibition of the reaction at concentrations higher than 0.35 and 0.5 g/l, respectively. Besides, higher substrate and product concentrations led to increased formation of the by-product 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-1,3-diphenyldisiloxane. Considering the limiting substrate and product concentrations, it was possible to use the same biomass at least 5 times without significant loss of enzyme activity. 3-Methyl-3-phenyl-2-butanone (5) and acetyldimethylphenylgermane (7), which represent carbon and germanium analogues of 1, were also found to be accepted as substrates by Trigonopsis variabilis (DSM 70714). The reduction rates of the silicon (1) and germanium compound (7) were much higher than the transformation rate of the corresponding carbon analogue 5.  相似文献

A novel approach to support the inspection of greenhouse crops is based on the measurement of volatile organic compounds emitted by unhealthy plants.This approach has attracted some serious interest over the last decade. In pursuit of this interest, we performed several experiments at the laboratory-scale to pinpoint marker volatiles that can be used to indicate certain health problems. In addition to these laboratory experiments, pilot and model studies were performed in order to verify the validity of these marker volatiles under real-world conditions. Under high levels of radiation (70-100 µW/m2 =175 mV/m), seeds of Brassicaceae Lepidium sativum (cress d’Alinois) never germinated. In fact, the first step of seeds’ germination ‒ e.g. imbibitions of germinal cells ‒ could not occur under radiation, while inside the humid compost such imbibitions occurred and roots slightly developed. When removed from the electromagnetic field, seeds germinated normally. The radiation was, thus, most likely the cause of the non-occurrence of the seeds’ imbibitions and germination.  相似文献
