The effects of interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1α) on chromium-51 absorption, tissue retention, and urinary excretion were studied
in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Ten rats were deprived of food for 12 h, injected intraperitoneally with mouse recombinant
IL-1α (1 Μg/kg of body weight in phosphate-buffered saline [PBS]) or control (0.1% bovine serum albumin [BSA] in PBS). Two
hours after dosing with the IL-1α, rats were fed 50 ΜL (200 ΜCi, 0.36 Μg Cr) of51CrCl3 by micropipet. Blood was collected from the tail at 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 h. Six hours after dosing with51CrCl3, rats were exsanguinated and blood and tissues were sampled. The IL-lα significantly decreased chromium-51 in blood, urine,
and some tissues compared to the control. The decreased absorption, retention, and urinary excretion of chromium-51 from51CrCl3 in this study may be due to IL-1α-mediated increases in the production of prostaglandins and/or decreased production of gastric

Burkholderia cepacia H111, which was isolated from a cystic fibrosis patient, effectively kills the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Depending on the medium used for growth of the bacterium two different killing modes were observed. On high-osmolarity medium the nematodes became paralysed and died within 24 h. Using filter assays we provide evidence that this killing mode involves the production of an extracellular toxin. On nematode growth medium killing occurs over the course of 2-3 days and involves the accumulation of bacteria in the intestinal lumen of C. elegans. We demonstrate that the cep quorum-sensing system of H111 is required for efficient killing of C. elegans under both killing conditions. Using the C. elegans phm-2 mutant that has a non-functional grinder evidence is provided that the cep system is required to enter the intestinal lumen but is dispensable for the colonization of the gut. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the type II secretion machinery is not essential for nematode killing. 相似文献

Background
Major population movements, social structure, and caste endogamy have influenced the genetic structure of Indian populations. An understanding of these influences is increasingly important as gene mapping and case-control studies are initiated in South Indian populations.Results
We report new data on 155 individuals from four Tamil caste populations of South India and perform comparative analyses with caste populations from the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh. Genetic differentiation among Tamil castes is low (RST = 0.96% for 45 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) markers), reflecting a largely common origin. Nonetheless, caste- and continent-specific patterns are evident. For 32 lineage-defining Y-chromosome SNPs, Tamil castes show higher affinity to Europeans than to eastern Asians, and genetic distance estimates to the Europeans are ordered by caste rank. For 32 lineage-defining mitochondrial SNPs and hypervariable sequence (HVS) 1, Tamil castes have higher affinity to eastern Asians than to Europeans. For 45 autosomal STRs, upper and middle rank castes show higher affinity to Europeans than do lower rank castes from either Tamil Nadu or Andhra Pradesh. Local between-caste variation (Tamil Nadu RST = 0.96%, Andhra Pradesh RST = 0.77%) exceeds the estimate of variation between these geographically separated groups (RST = 0.12%). Low, but statistically significant, correlations between caste rank distance and genetic distance are demonstrated for Tamil castes using Y-chromosome, mtDNA, and autosomal data.Conclusion
Genetic data from Y-chromosome, mtDNA, and autosomal STRs are in accord with historical accounts of northwest to southeast population movements in India. CD731 is a GPI-anchored cell surface protein with ecto-5'-nucleotidase enzyme activity that plays a crucial role in adenosine production. While the roles of adenosine receptors (AR) on osteoblasts and osteoclasts have been unveiled to some extent, the roles of CD73 and CD73-generated adenosine in bone tissue are largely unknown. To address this issue, we first analyzed the bone phenotype of CD73-deficient (cd73(-/-)) mice. The mutant male mice showed osteopenia, with significant decreases of osteoblastic markers. Levels of osteoclastic markers were, however, comparable to those of wild-type mice. A series of in vitro studies revealed that CD73 deficiency resulted in impairment in osteoblast differentiation but not in the number of osteoblast progenitors. In addition, over expression of CD73 on MC3T3-E1 cells resulted in enhanced osteoblastic differentiation. Moreover, MC3T3-E1 cells expressed adenosine A(2A) receptors (A(2A)AR) and A(2B) receptors (A(2B)AR) and expression of these receptors increased with osteoblastic differentiation. Enhanced expression of osteocalcin (OC) and bone sialoprotein (BSP) observed in MC3T3-E1 cells over expressing CD73 were suppressed by treatment with an A(2B)AR antagonist but not with an A(2A) AR antagonist. ABSTRACT There are many challenges facing natural resources programs in North American higher education today. Pressures exerted by a new generation of students, changing workplace requirements (including undergraduate core-knowledge requirements), and an increasingly specialized professoriate are great but not insurmountable. We discuss each of these issues and pose potential solutions to address each including adopting new pedagogical techniques for content delivery (e.g., adapting courses to be inclusive of new technologies), revising curriculum to meet the needs of a new suite of learners (e.g., developing curricula that allow structured flexibility of choices, designing a core curriculum that is a mix of single-discipline courses and courses that integrate across disciplines), and new strategies for faculty engagement in discipline-specific survey courses. By remaining deliberate and effective in our pursuit of quality higher education we have the opportunity to ensure we are delivering the best possible education to the future professionals of our disciplines. 相似文献

Nauplii and adults of the copepod Eurytemora affinis Poppe collectedfrom the Multiscale Experimental Ecosystem Research Center (MEERC)mesocosms and from the Choptank River (a subestuary of ChesapeakeBay) reduced ciliate and dinoflagellate microplankton densitiessignificantly during grazing experiments. Protozoan microplanktongenerally were consumed in proportion to their availability,although both adult copepod and naupliar clearance rates werehigher for larger prey ({small tilde}40µm). Ingestionof ciliate microplankton was confirmed by examining copepodgut fluorescence after brief (1 h) incubations with ciliateslabeled with a fluorescent vital stain (5-chloromethylfluoresceindiacetate). In addition, both adults and nauplii of E.affiniscleared protozoan microplankton at considerably higher ratesthan chlorophyll a. Naupliar clearance rates were generallyan order of magnitude lower than adult rates, but given naupliarabundances in copepod assemblages, they should contribute substantiallyto total grazing on protozoan microplankton. This study presents a methodology for using tracer indicators to measure the effects of disease-specific programs on national health systems. The methodology is then used to analyze the effects of Bangladesh’s Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination Program, a disease-specific program, on the health system. Using difference-in-differences models and secondary data from population-based household surveys, this study compares changes over time in the utilization rates of eight essential health services and incidences of catastrophic health expenditures between individuals and households, respectively, of lymphatic filariasis hyper-endemic districts (treatment districts) and of hypo- and non-endemic districts (control districts). Utilization of all health services increased from year 2000 to year 2014 for the entire population but more so for the population living in treatment districts. However, when the services were analyzed individually, the difference-in-differences between the two populations was insignificant. Disadvantaged populations (i.e., populations that lived in rural areas, belonged to lower wealth quintiles, or did not attend school) were less likely to access essential health services. After five years of program interventions, households in control districts had a lower incidence of catastrophic health expenditures at several thresholds measured using total household expenditures and total non-food expenditures as denominators. Using essential health service coverage rates as outcome measures, the Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination Program cannot be said to have strengthened or weakened the health system. We can also say that there is a positive association between the Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination Program’s interventions and lowered incidence of catastrophic health expenditures. 相似文献

After fasting 3 h, the pups were intubated with a single dose of 25 μCi51CrCl3 in either a cow's milk-based formula, an Fe-supplemented cow's milk-based formula, a soy-based formula, or human milk. hours later,51Cr was counted in five organs, thymus, blood, and total urine. Absorption of51Cr was low. At 6 h, percent51Cr in blood was <0.2% of the dose, and total51Cr excretion in urine was <1.8%. Fine scale spatial distributions of planktonic ciliates whichprey on dinoflagellates were investigated in a small estuary.The horizontal distributions of Favella sp., Balanion sp. andStrobilidium sp. were positively correlated with the patchydistribution of dinoflagellates. The vertical distribution ofFavella was positively corrdated with the distribution of dinoflagellates.Throughout the diel cycle, the vertical distribution of Faveilawas similar to the vertical distribution of dinoflagellates.We speculate that behavioral responses are responsible for theassociation of diliates with their prey in the water column.Vertically coincident ciliate and algal populations should respondsimilarly to turbulent mixing and water displacement causedby wind stress, bathymetry, or frontal convergences. This wouldresult in horizontal patches in which the ciliates and algaeremain associated. This fine scale spatial coupling betweenciliates and their prey should result in higher ciliate growthrates and greater impact of ciliate grazing on phytoplanktonpopulations than would be predicted from average ciliate oralgal densities. Coincident patches of algae and ciliates mayalso provide higher food concentrations for larger grazers whichcan use both resources.
