S ummary : The presence of PVC plasticizers inhibits fungal attack on cotton yarn to various extents. Some plasticizers apparently prevent attack of yarn by inhibiting fungal growth whilst others are utilized in preference to cellulose. The fungal penetration of plastic coated cotton yarn was enhanced by incorporating susceptible plasticizers. Attempts to relate attack on coated yarn by fungi to tolerance of more anaerobic conditions were only partly successful.  相似文献

Consistent individual differences in animal performance drive individual fitness under variable environmental conditions and provide the framework through which natural selection can operate. Underlying this concept is the assumption that individuals will display consistent levels of performance in fitness-related traits and interest has focused on individual variation and broad sense repeatability in a range of behavioural and physiological traits. Despite playing a central role in maintenance and growth, and with considerable inter-individual variation documented, broad sense repeatability in rates of protein synthesis has not been assessed. In this study we show for the first time that juvenile flounder Platichthys flesus reared under controlled environmental conditions on the same plane of nutrition for 46 days maintain consistent whole-animal absolute rates of protein synthesis (As). By feeding meals containing 15N-labelled protein and using a stochastic end-point model, two non-terminal measures of protein synthesis were made 32 days apart (d14 and d46). As values (mass-corrected to a standard mass of 12 g) showed 2- to 3-fold variation between individuals on d14 and d46 but individuals showed similar As values on both days with a broad sense repeatability estimate of 0.684 indicating significant consistency in physiological performance under controlled experimental conditions. The use of non-terminal methodologies in studies of animal ecophysiology to make repeat measures of physiological performance enables known individuals to be tracked across changing conditions. Adopting this approach, repeat measures of protein synthesis under controlled conditions will allow individual ontogenetic changes in protein metabolism to be assessed to better understand the ageing process and to determine individual physiological adaptive capacity, and associated energetic costs of adaptation, to global environmental change.  相似文献

Transporters play a vital role in both the resistance mechanisms of existing drugs and effective targeting of their replacements. Melarsoprol and diamidine compounds similar to pentamidine and furamidine are primarily taken up by trypanosomes of the genus Trypanosoma brucei through the P2 aminopurine transporter. In standardized competition experiments with [3H]adenosine, P2 transporter inhibition constants (Ki) have been determined for a diverse dataset of adenosine analogs, diamidines, Food and Drug Administration-approved compounds and analogs thereof, and custom-designed trypanocidal compounds. Computational biology has been employed to investigate compound structure diversity in relation to P2 transporter interaction. These explorations have led to models for inhibition predictions of known and novel compounds to obtain information about the molecular basis for P2 transporter inhibition. A common pharmacophore for P2 transporter inhibition has been identified along with other key structural characteristics. Our model provides insight into P2 transporter interactions with known compounds and contributes to strategies for the design of novel antiparasitic compounds. This approach offers a quantitative and predictive tool for molecular recognition by specific transporters without the need for structural or even primary sequence information of the transport protein.  相似文献

Cell sorting has been used as a method for characterizing hemopoietic stem cells and progenitors. Fluorescent antibody-surface labels and changes in fluorescence polarization induced by in vitro stimulation with potential hemopoietic regulators were used. As detected by significant enrichment of CFU-S (pluripotent stem cells) in fluorescence-activated cell sorting, some CFU-S bear 'unique antigens' recognized by rabbit anti-human brain sera, human anti-human sperm sera, and 129 anti-F9 serum, but not A . TH anti-A . TL (Ia) ascites. Significant changes in fluorescence polarization induced by in vitro stimulation of mouse bone marrow with potential hemopoietic regulators were also observed; further, progenitors of human T-lymphocyte colonies were observed to exhibit a significantly decreased mean polarization value after short-term stimulation with PHA-LCM (phytohemagglutinin-stimulated leukocyte conditioned medium).  相似文献

The total nitrogen and L-hydroxyproline concentrations of two intra-abdominal and two subcutaneous sites of adipose tissue were measured in male and female Wistar rats. At 100 g body weight the nitrogen concentration of intra-abdominal adipose tissue was slightly lower than that of subcutaneous adipose tissue. As age advanced beyond sexual maturity, the nitrogen content of intra-abdominal adipose tissue was steadily reduced, whereas that of subcutaneous tissue did not change. The L-hydroxyproline concentration of intra-abdominal adipose tissue was also lower than in subcutaneous adipose tissue. In male rats it rose in most adipose tissue sites when sexual maturity was reached, then fell with advancing age. In female rats the pattern of change was less consistent, but the l-hydroxyproline content of intra-abdominal adipose tissue was reduced as age increased.  相似文献

Acridine Orange, at appropriate intermediate concentrations, causes a substantial broadening of the thermal transitions of Bacillus subtilis DNA and of dAT. Study of magnesium paracrystals has shown that the troponin binding region of tropomyosin is within about 30 Å of a dyad axis which lies close to Cys190 and Leu197. The region of α-tropomyosin between residues 197 and 217 has an exceptionally small number of negative charges, a significantly high concentration of uncharged polar groups, and a large hydrophobic surface. These features suggest that this is the main binding site for troponin T. A second weaker site for calcium-sensitive binding to troponin could exist on the opposite face of the symmetrical double helix.  相似文献
