Placental nutrient provision has evolved in multiple lineages of squamate reptiles and although possible structural specializations for placentotrophy have been described in a variety of species, neither the pathways nor the mechanisms of placental transfer are known. Lizards of the Australian genus Pseudemoia are placentotrophic and have elaborate placental structures that are thought to enhance nutrient transfer. The chorioallantoic placenta, which occupies the embryonic hemisphere of the egg, is regionally diversified into a large area with low epithelial height and a smaller placentome with cuboidal or columnar epithelia. Both regions are underlain by an extensive vascular bed. The abembryonic hemisphere of the egg is covered by an omphaloplacenta, which is similar to the placentome in having cuboidal or columnar epithelia but with a different embryonic vascular supply. We tested the hypothesis that embryonic epithelial cells of the placentome and the omphaloplacenta of Pseudemoia entrecasteauxii are each capable of endocytosis. Embryos (stages 33-39) with intact extraembryonic membranes were surgically removed from the uterus and incubated in a solution containing fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran (77,000 MW). The fluorescent label was detected in the cytoplasm of scattered populations of epithelial cells in both placental regions of all embryonic stages. We conclude that both the placentome and the omphaloplacenta of P. entrecasteauxii are sites of histotrophic nutrient transport. However, there are histological and cytological differences in the embryonic epithelia of these two placental regions. The histological differences reflect differences in the evolutionary precursors of each tissue. The cytological differences likely portray different functional specializations. 相似文献

Unique among primates, the colobine monkeys have adapted to a predominantly leaf-eating diet by evolving a foregut that utilizes bacterial fermentation to breakdown and absorb nutrients from such a food source. It has been hypothesized that pancreatic ribonuclease (pRNase) has been recruited to perform a role as a digestive enzyme in foregut fermenters, such as artiodactyl ruminants and the colobines. We present molecular analyses of 23 pRNase gene sequences generated from 8 primate taxa, including 2 African and 2 Asian colobine species. The pRNase gene is single copy in all noncolobine primate species assayed but has duplicated more than once in both the African and Asian colobine monkeys. Phylogenetic reconstructions show that the pRNase-coding and noncoding regions are under different evolutionary constraints, with high levels of concerted evolution among gene duplicates occurring predominantly in the noncoding regions. Our data suggest that 2 functionally distinct pRNases have been selected for in the colobine monkeys, with one group adapting to the role of a digestive enzyme by evolving at an increased rate with loss of positive charge, namely arginine residues. Conclusions relating our data to general hypotheses of evolution following gene duplication are discussed. 相似文献

To provide tools for breeders to control the steroidal glycoalkaloid (SGA) pathway in potato, we have investigated the steroidal alkaloid glycosyltransferase (Sgt) gene family. The committed step in the SGA pathway is the glycosylation of solanidine by either UDP-glucose or UDP-galactose leading to α-chaconine or α-solanine, respectively. The Sgt2 gene was identified by deduced protein sequence homology to the previously identified Sgt1 gene. SGT1 has glucosyltransferase activity in vitro, but in vivo serves as the UDP-galactose:solanidine galactosyltransferase. Two alleles of the Sgt2 gene were isolated and its function was established with antisense transgenic lines and in vitro assays of recombinant protein. In tubers of transgenic potato (Solanum tuberosum) cvs. Lenape and Desirée expressing an antisense Sgt2 gene construct, accumulation of α-solanine was increased and α-chaconine was reduced. Studies with recombinant SGT2 protein purified from yeast show that SGT2 glycosylation activity is highly specific for UDP-glucose as a sugar donor. Intergenerational effects arise when parents' actions influence the reproduction and survival of their offspring and possibly later descendants. Models suggest that intergenerational effects have important implications for both population dynamical patterns and the evolution of life-history traits. However, these will depend on the nature and duration of intergenerational effects. Here we show that manipulating parental food environments of soil mites produced intergenerational effects that were still detectable in the life histories of descendents three generations later. Intergenerational effects varied in different environments and from one generation to the next. In low-food environments, variation in egg size altered a trade-off between age and size at maturity and had little effect on the size of eggs produced in subsequent generations. Consequently, intergenerational effects decreased over time. In contrast, in high-food environments, variation in egg size predominantly influenced a trade-off between fecundity and adult survival and generated increasing variation in egg size. As a result, the persistence and significance of intergenerational effects varied between high- and low-food environments. Context-dependent intergenerational effects can therefore have complex but important effects on population dynamics. 相似文献
