In lettuce, Lactuca sativa short chain fatty acids (C6 - C9) vary in their effectiveness as inhibitors of germination according to temperature; the higher the temperature, the greater the inhibition. A linear relationship exists between temperature and the dose causing half-maximal germination. Nonanoic (C9) acid is the most effective.  相似文献

This paper reviews the experience of the Workmen''s Compensation Board of Ontario in identifying cases of cancer that could be attributed to occupational hazards. Worker''s claims for compensation are allowed if there is reasonable medical evidence that their cancer was caused by exposure to risk factors associated with their occupation. Details of the types of cancer associated with specific carcinogens or fields of employment are discussed. About 50% of the cases were related to exposure in particular industrial operations that functioned for relatively brief periods. The number of deaths from cancer identified as being caused by occupational factors is compared with the total for cancer from all causes in Ontario during the period 1971 through 1975. Although all workers eligible for compensation may not have been identified, the data suggest that less than 1% of cancer is presently caused by occupational factors.  相似文献

Through a systematic reduction of peptide structure, a series of 25 tripeptide and 5 dipeptide amide and alcohol analogs of enkephalin were synthesized and assayed in vitro on the stimulated guinea pig ileum. Tyr-Pro-Phe-NH2, Tyr-D-Ala-Phe-NH2, Tyr-D-Ala-Phe-ol and Tyr-D-Phe-Phe-NH2 had 20-25% the potency of Met-enkephalin. Four aromatic alkylamides of the dipeptide Tyr-D-Ala were made with benzylamine, phenethylamine, phenylpropylamine and phenylbutylamine. All had full naloxone reversible enkephalin-like activity in the ileum assay. Tyr-D-Ala-phenylpropylamide has about 80% the potency of Met-enkephalin in vitro, and is equipotent with Tyr-D-Ala-Gly-Phe-Met-NH2 in producing analgesia in mice after intraventricular administration. Tyr-D-Phe-NH2 is the smallest peptide to show full intrinsic enkephalin-like activity in vitro, although its potency is very low.  相似文献

Sodium dodecyl sulphate/polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis was used to characterize human leucocyte interferon (HuIFN-alpha) under reducing and non-reducing conditions. Under non-reducing conditions HuIFN-alpha possesses two size forms, but under reducing conditions (r-HuIFN-alpha) only one is observed. The apparent molecular weight of this one form varies with the concentration of 2-mercaptoethanol used. When r-HuIFN-alpha is permitted to reoxidize the bimodal configuration of HuIFN-alpha is restored. The size heterogeneity of native HuIFN-alpha can be eliminated by mild treatment with NaIO4 [HuIFN-alpha/IO4; Stewart II, Lin, Wiranowska-Stewart & Cantell (1977) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 74, 4200-4204]. The size of the HuIFN-alpha/IO4 increases after treatment with 2-mercaptoethanol (r-HuIFN-alpha/IO4) and the apparent molecular weight of this component also varies with the concentration of 2-mercaptoethanol used. In the case of r-HuIFN-alpha the single peak observed apparently originates from both the higher- and lower-molecular-weight components.  相似文献

Methods are described for the systematic construction of genetic models of schizophrenia with one, two, and four loci. All models are constrained to fit the following three parameters: (1) frequency of schizophrenia in the general population = 0.9%; (2) frequency of schizophrenia in the sibs of schizophrenics = 8%; and (3) frequency of "schizophrenic spectrum" in the sibs of schizophrenics = 15%. In addition, a fourth parameter, the frequency of the allele predisposing to schizophrenia, is freely variable. The problems of correcting for ascertainment bias, and of comparing and testing these genetic models, are discussed.  相似文献

Spectrophotometric measurements of metarhodopsin II appearance are made on five different kinds of rhodopsin preparations. Although the preparations differ greatly in their rhodopsin: phospholipid ratio, the meta II kinetics in all of them are strikingly similar in certain respects. Meta II appearance kinetics in all of the preparations are best described by two and only two exponentials. The ratio of these two rates is always about 5. The fast fraction: slow fraction ratio depends upon temperature. These fractions are reversibly convertible in the dark, and are interconverted on a time-scale which is long compared to the meta II appearance rate. It is shown that the kinetics of the earlier step in the bleaching sequence, viz., lumi- meta I, is also described by double exponentials. Again the ratio of rates is ca. 5 and the fast-slow fractions correspond to those found in the meta I meta II step. It is proposed that these facts support an hypothesis for the existence of two conformeric states of rhodopsin which are in thermal equilibrium. Thermodynamic parameters associated with this proposed equilibrium are presented.  相似文献

A convenient and reliable method for culturing cotton embryos is needed to obtain interspecific hybrids of this genus. C.A. Beasley and I.P. Ting (Amer. J. Bot. 60, 130, 1973) developed a phytohormone-supplemented medium (BTP) upon which the growth of ovules was similar that of in situ ovules. This medium was examined for in-ovulo embryo culture. Although good ovule growth occurred on BTP no embryos developed to maturity. However, when the medium was supplemented with NH 4 + , more than 50% of the ovules produced mature embryos, and many of these germinated precociously after 8–10 weeks of culture. After germination seedlings were established on a separate medium designed to give balanced root and shoot growth. Subsequently young plants could be transferred to pots for greenhouse culture.  相似文献

The fungicide benomyl and its commercial preparations Fundazol 50WP and Benlate 50WP and the benomyl metabolite methyl-2-benzimidazole carbamate and its commercial preparation MBC 50WP were tested for mutagenicity in in vitro spot tests, in microsomal plate assay, in liquid-culture treatments, or in rodent host-mediated assay. The base-pair substitution Salmonella typhimurium mutant hisG46 and the hisG46-bearing uvrB excision-repair-deficient mutants TA100, TA1530, TA1535 or TA1950 were used as test organisms. Complete genotypic information of these mutants is given in Ames et al. [2]. Captain 50WP, streptozotocin (SZN), N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), 2-aminopurine and N-acetylaminofluorene were used as positive control compounds. In nonoverlay spot tests Benlate 50WP was not mutagenic over a dose range of 50-5000 microgram/spot in hisG46 and TA1535. In overlay spot tests 50 or 100 microgram/spot Benomyl, MBC, Fundazol 50WP, Benlate 50WP and MBC 50WP were tested in hisG46, TA1530 or TA1950. Only a non-commercial MBC sample at 100 microgram/spot showed weak mutagenic activity in hisG46. In microsomal activation plate assay MBC, benomyl, Fundazol 50WP and Benlate 50WP were tested in TA100 over a dose range of 50-2000 microgram/plate. None of the compounds showed mutagenicity. In a 20-h liquid-culture treatment 10, 100, 1000 and 10 000 microgram/ml Fundazol 50WP were not mutagenic in TA 30. In 1-h liquid-culture treatments benomyl, Benlate 50WP or Fundazol 50WP failed to induce mutations in hisG46, TA100 or TA1950 over a dose range of 0.25-1000 microgram/ml. Appropriate positive controls were mutagenic in each experiment. The consistently negative results in this study with commercial MBC and benomyl preparations are contrary to positive results reported earlier with similar methods and similar commercial preparations. Possible reasons to explain the different results are presented. The alkylating agents SZN and MNNG induced fewer mutations in TA1530 and TA1950 uvrB excision-repair-deficient strains than in the hisG46 excision-proficient strain, indicating that with these mutagens excision-repair is also a mutation-prone process. In rodent host-mediated assays with Fundazol 50WP in mice 3 consecutive subcutaneous hourly doses of 500 mg/kg in hisG46 and TA1950 and in rats or mice an oral dose of 4000 mg/kg in TA1950 were not mutagenic. The positive control SZN was mutagenic.  相似文献
