Sulfur cycling in grassland and parkland soils   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0  
A conceptual diagram of the S cycle in grassland soils is presented as a framework for discussing S cycling process studies. Changes in the mineralization of S and in the redistribution of35S-labeled sulfate among soil organic matter fractions were investigated during incubation of cropped and uncropped soils.Little mineralization or net immobilization of sulfur occurred in closed system incubations where the soils were left undisturbed throughout the incubations. Significantly more S was mineralized in open system incubations where the soils were leached periodically. Net mineralization was significantly greater in cropped soils compared with uncropped soils. The distribution of35S was significantly affected by the addition of various substrates (sulfate, cellulose or a combination of both) and by the presence of plants. Under conditions of high solution sulfate, the majority of35S incorporated was observed in the HI-reducible S fraction. When the solution sulfate concentrations were lower, there was a reduction in the proportion of35S incorporated into the HI-reducible S fraction. Sex cell contact in Chlamydomonas is due to complementary sex-specific glycoproteins (mating-type substances, MTSs). Their interaction causes an instantaneous but labile flagella agglutination between sexually different gametes. The dynamic nature of this contact permits partner exchange between agglutinated gametes and accounts for the transitoriness of the contact, flagella adhesion being terminated upon ensuing pairing. This paper describes molecular events that underlie the adhesion potential of differentiated (+) gametes. In the contact-establishing interaction with its receptors on the (?) flagella, the agglutinin of differentiated (+) gametes is inactivated. Compensating for this inactivation, the adhesion potential of gametes in agglutination is sustained by continuous replenishment of the inactivated MTS by newly synthesized units. If this glycoprotein neosynthesis is blocked by tunicamycin (TUM), the adhesiveness of differentiated (+) gametes ceases. It is postulated that this complex interaction with incapacitation and neosynthesis forms the basis of the dynamic nature of the flagella contact and eventually accounts for its termination at pairing.  相似文献

The equilibrium structure of models of differential selection in the sexes is investigated. It is shown that opposing additive selection leads to stable polymorphic equilibria for only a restricted set of selection intensities, and that for weak selection the selection intensities must be of approximately the same magnitude in the sexes. General models of opposing directional selection, with arbitrary dominance, are investigated by considering simultaneously the stability properties of the trivial equilibria and the curve along which multiple roots appear. Numerical calculations lead us to infer that the average degree of dominance determines the equilibrium characteristics of models of opposing selection. It appears that if the favored alleles are, on the average, recessive, there may be multiple polymorphic equilibria, whereas only a single polymorphic equilibrium can occur when the favored alleles are, on the average, dominant. The principle that the average degree of dominance controls equilibrium behavior is then extended to models allowing directional selection in one sex with overdominance in the other sex, by showing that polymorphism is maintained if and only if the average fitness in heterozygotes exceeds one.  相似文献

A quantitative statistical analysis has confirmed the high degree of homology between human luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone and human chorionic gonadotropin beta subunit sequences, and has demonstrated much higher and extensive homology between follicle stimulating hormone and the others than was previously thought. Three “variable” zones have been detected in these sequences and these are likely to contain many of the residues responsible for the determination of receptor interaction specificity. For luteinizing hormone, comparison of sequences from different species has reduced the range of these residues to positions 1 to 6, 11, 14, 39 to 53, 75, 94, 97, 101, 104 and 108.  相似文献

We have previously reported the isolation and characterization of UAA suppressors from a haploid strain of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae containing the ψ+ non-Mendelian determinant which increases the efficiency of action of certain suppressors (Ono et al., 1979). Most of the suppressors caused the insertion of either tyrosine or serine. In contrast, the pattern of suppression of nutritional markers suggested that the rare suppressor, SUP26, inserted in an amino acid other than tyrosine or serine. In this investigation we report the characterization of additional suppressors, similar to SUP26, that were isolated on a medium lacking uracil and containing canavanine; this medium is expected to exclude serine-inserting suppressors because they do not suppress the ura4-1 marker, and to exclude tyrosine-inserting suppressors because they suppress the can1-100 marker. The total of 155 revertants similar to the SUP26 suppressor were analyzed genetically and these could be assigned to one or another of the six distinct loci SUP26, SUP27, SUP28, SUP29, SUP32 and SUP33. The SUP26, SUP27 and SUP29 loci mapped on chromosomes XII, IV and X, respectively. The detailed map position of the SUP29 suppressor suggests that it may be allelic to the SUP30 suppressor reported by Hawthorne &; Mortimer (1968). These six suppressors had the same pattern of suppression of UAA nutritional markers and all of them had a similar low efficiency of action on the iso-1-cytochrome c mutation cyc1-72. The efficiency of each of these suppressors was increased by a chromosomal allo-suppressor, sal. Each of the six suppressors caused the insertion of leucine in iso-1-cytochrome c at the UAA site of the cyc1-72 mutation. It is suggested that the gene products of these suppressors are redundant forms of the same leucine transfer RNA.  相似文献
