Mapping biological diversity is a high priority for conservation research, management and policy development, but few studies
have provided diversity data at high spatial resolution from remote sensing. We used airborne imaging spectroscopy to map
woody vascular plant species richness in lowland tropical forest ecosystems in Hawai’i. Hyperspectral signatures spanning
the 400–2,500 nm wavelength range acquired by the NASA Airborne Visible and Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) were analyzed
at 17 forest sites with species richness values ranging from 1 to 17 species per 0.1–0.3 ha. Spatial variation (range) in
the shape of the AVIRIS spectra (derivative reflectance) in wavelength regions associated with upper-canopy pigments, water,
and nitrogen content were well correlated with species richness across field sites. An analysis of leaf chlorophyll, water,
and nitrogen content within and across species suggested that increasing spectral diversity was linked to increasing species
richness by way of increasing biochemical diversity. A linear regression analysis showed that species richness was predicted
by a combination of four biochemically-distinct wavelength observations centered at 530, 720, 1,201, and 1,523 nm (r
2 = 0.85, p < 0.01). This relationship was used to map species richness at approximately 0.1 ha resolution in lowland forest reserves
throughout the study region. Future remote sensing studies of biodiversity will benefit from explicitly connecting chemical
and physical properties of the organisms to remotely sensed data. 相似文献

Background
In 2006, the Médecins sans Frontières nutritional program in the region of Maradi (Niger) included 68,001 children 6–59 months of age with either moderate or severe malnutrition, according to the NCHS reference (weight-for-height<80% of the NCHS median, and/or mid-upper arm circumference<110 mm for children taller than 65 cm and/or presence of bipedal edema). Our objective was to identify baseline risk factors for death among children diagnosed with severe malnutrition using the newly introduced WHO growth standards. As the release of WHO growth standards changed the definition of severe malnutrition, which now includes many children formerly identified as moderately malnourished with the NCHS reference, studying this new category of children is crucial.Methodology
Program monitoring data were collected from the medical records of all children admitted in the program. Data included age, sex, height, weight, MUAC, clinical signs on admission including edema, and type of discharge (recovery, death, and default/loss to follow up). Additional data included results of a malaria rapid diagnostic test due to Plasmodium falciparum (Paracheck®) and whether the child was a resident of the region of Maradi or came from bordering Nigeria to seek treatment. Multivariate logistic regression was performed on a subset of 27,687 children meeting the new WHO growth standards criteria for severe malnutrition (weight-for-height<−3 Z score, mid-upper arm circumference<110 mm for children taller than 65 cm or presence of bipedal edema). We explored two different models: one with only basic anthropometric data and a second model that included perfunctory clinical signs.Principal Findings
In the first model including only weight, height, sex and presence of edema, the risk factors retained were the weight/height1.84 ratio (OR: 5,774; 95% CI: [2,284; 14,594]) and presence of edema (7.51 [5.12; 11.0]). A second model, taking into account supplementary data from perfunctory clinical examination, identified other risk factors for death: apathy (9.71 [6.92; 13.6]), pallor (2.25 [1.25; 4.05]), anorexia (1.89 [1.35; 2.66]), fever>38.5°C (1.83 [1.25; 2.69]), and age below 1 year (1.42 [1.01; 1.99]).Conclusions
Although clinicians will continue to perform screening using clinical signs and anthropometry, these risk indicators may provide additional criteria for the assessment of absolute and relative risk of death. Better appraisal of the child''s risk of death may help orientate the child towards either hospitalization or ambulatory care. As the transition from the NCHS growth reference to the WHO standards will increase the number of children classified as severely malnourished, further studies should explore means to identify children at highest risk of death within this group using simple and standardized indicators. 相似文献104.

Scheffersomyces (formerly Pichia) stipitis NRRL Y-7124 was mutagenized using UV-C irradiation to produce yeast strains for anaerobic conversion of lignocellulosic sugars to ethanol. UV-C irradiation potentially produces large numbers of random mutations broadly and uniformly over the whole genome to generate unique strains. Wild-type cultures of S. stipitis NRRL Y-7124 were subjected to UV-C (234 nm) irradiation targeted at approximately 40% cell survival. When surviving cells were selected in sufficient numbers via automated plating strategies and cultured anaerobically on xylose medium for 5 months at 28°C, five novel mutagenized S. stipitis strains were obtained. Variable number tandem repeat analysis revealed that mutations had occurred in the genome, which may have produced genes that allowed the anaerobic utilization of xylose. The mutagenized strains were capable of growing anaerobically on xylose/glucose substrate with higher ethanol production during 250- to 500-h growth than a Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast strain that is the standard for industrial fuel ethanol production. The S. stipitis strains resulting from this intense multigene mutagenesis strategy have potential application in industrial fuel ethanol production from lignocellulosic hydrolysates. 相似文献

Fatty acids have distinct cellular effects related to inflammation and insulin sensitivity. Dietary saturated fat activates toll-like receptor 4, which in turn can lead to chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and adipose tissue macrophage infiltration. Conversely, n3 fatty acids are generally antiinflammatory and promote insulin sensitivity, in part via peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ. Ossabaw swine are a useful biomedical model of obesity. We fed Ossabaw pigs either a low-fat control diet or a diet containing high-fat palm oil with or without additional n3 fatty acids for 30 wk to investigate the effect of saturated fats and n3 fatty acids on obesity-linked inflammatory markers. The diet did not influence the inflammatory markers C-reactive protein, TNFα, IL6, or IL12. In addition, n3 fatty acids attenuated the increase in inflammatory adipose tissue CD16–CD14+ macrophages induced by high palm oil. High-fat diets with and without n3 fatty acids both induced hyperglycemia without hyperinsulinemia. The high-fat only group but not the high-fat group with n3 fatty acids showed reduced insulin sensitivity in response to insulin challenge. This effect was not mediated by decreased phosphorylation of protein kinase B. Therefore, in obese Ossabaw swine, n3 fatty acids partially attenuate insulin resistance but only marginally change inflammatory status and macrophage phenotype in adipose tissue.Abbreviations: AMPKα, AMP-activated protein kinase α, CRP, C-reactive protein, DHA, docosahexanoic acid, EPA, eicosapentanoic acid, HFP, high-fat palm-oil diet, HFPn3, high-fat palm-oil diet supplemented with n3 fatty acids, HOMA-IR, homeostasis model of assessment–, insulin resistance, LFC, low-fat control diet, PKB, protein kinase B, PUFA, polyunsaturated fatty acidsObesity is accompanied by chronic inflammation in adipose tissue; increased circulating concentrations of TNFα, IL6, and C-reactive protein (CRP); and decreased concentrations of adiponectin.2 This chronic inflammation links obesity and the development of insulin resistance.39 Dietary saturated fatty acids promote obesity in part through the induction of inflammation via activation of toll-like receptor 4 (the innate immune receptor for LPS).28 The absence of functional tlr4 in mice reduces circulating proinflammatory cytokine concentrations and decreases macrophage infiltration into adipose tissue during high-fat diet-induced obesity.8,28,32 Furthermore, in 3T3 L1 mouse adipocytes, palmitate activates NFκB, protein kinase C, and mitogen-activated protein kinase, all of which increase the production of inflammatory cytokines.1For people who consume a diet high in saturated fat, a major determinant of health is the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids (that is, n6:n3) that is consumed.5,6 Unlike saturated fatty acids, the n3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA) exert predominantly antiinflammatory effects, as is evident in that DHA antagonizes NFκB activation by palmitate in 3T3 L1 adipocytes.1 In mice, EPA prevents or reverses hyperinsulinemia, hyperglycemia, and increased circulating monocyte chemotatic protein 116 and decreases infiltration of adipose tissue with macrophages.30 Moreover, n3 PUFA alleviate the decline in serum adiponectin that is associated with obesity,12,15,30 and EPA decreases serum CRP in diabetic patients.26Physiologic differences between rodents and humans underscore the need for comparative models in biomedical research, and the pig is emerging rapidly as a model for studies of energy metabolism and obesity. Like humans, pigs are natural omnivores, rely on apolipoprotein B100 to shuttle cholesterol in the LDL fraction, and have minimal brown fat retention postnatally. Furthermore, adipose depots in pigs are of sufficient size that multiple assays can be done on adipocytes or stromal vascular cells without pooling across depots or animals. Although Ossabaw swine have been used as models for metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease, and steatohepatisis,11,20,24 little is known about adipose inflammation in these animals. Consequently, we sought to characterize obesity-linked inflammatory markers in the adipose tissue of this novel model and to test the hypothesis that adding n3 PUFA to a diet high in saturated fat attenuates chronic inflammation, protects against diet-induced insulin resistance, and alters phenotypic changes in adipose tissue macrophages. 相似文献

MOTIVATION: In protein chemistry, proteomics and biopharmaceutical development, there is a desire to know not only where a protein is cleaved by a protease, but also the susceptibility of its cleavage sites. The current tools for proteolytic cleavage prediction have often relied purely on regular expressions, or involve models that do not represent biological data well. RESULTS: A novel methodology for characterizing proteolytic cleavage site activities has been developed, which incorporates two fundamental features: activity class prediction and the use of an amino acid similarity matrix for (non-parametric) neural learning. The first solved the problem of predicting proteolytic efficiency. The second significantly improved the robustness in prediction and reduced the time complexity for learning. This study shows that activity class prediction is successful when applying this methodology to the prediction and characterization of Trypsin cleavage sites and the prediction of HIV protease cleavage sites. Background
Increasing active travel (primarily walking and cycling) has been widely advocated for reducing obesity levels and achieving other population health benefits. However, the strength of evidence underpinning this strategy is unclear. This study aimed to assess the evidence that active travel has significant health benefits. Methods
The study design was a systematic review of (i) non-randomised and randomised controlled trials, and (ii) prospective observational studies examining either (a) the effects of interventions to promote active travel or (b) the association between active travel and health outcomes. Reports of studies were identified by searching 11 electronic databases, websites, reference lists and papers identified by experts in the field. Prospective observational and intervention studies measuring any health outcome of active travel in the general population were included. Studies of patient groups were excluded. Results
Twenty-four studies from 12 countries were included, of which six were studies conducted with children. Five studies evaluated active travel interventions. Nineteen were prospective cohort studies which did not evaluate the impact of a specific intervention. No studies were identified with obesity as an outcome in adults; one of five prospective cohort studies in children found an association between obesity and active travel. Small positive effects on other health outcomes were found in five intervention studies, but these were all at risk of selection bias. Modest benefits for other health outcomes were identified in five prospective studies. There is suggestive evidence that active travel may have a positive effect on diabetes prevention, which may be an important area for future research. Conclusions
Active travel may have positive effects on health outcomes, but there is little robust evidence to date of the effectiveness of active transport interventions for reducing obesity. Future evaluations of such interventions should include an assessment of their impacts on obesity and other health outcomes. 相似文献110.
