The termini of the avian chick embryo lethal orphan (CELO) virus DNA have been sequenced. The results revealed a 63-bp-long inverted terminal repetition (ITR) which shared the sequence ATAATA with all adenovirus termini, thus far analyzed. The CELO virus ITR differed from those of the mammalian adenoviruses in two major aspects: (i) it is not a perfect duplication; (ii) it begins with a 5'-guanylic acid residue instead of the cytidylic acid normally observed in adenoviruses.  相似文献

Periodate-oxidized ATP (oATP) inactivates the partial reaction of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases in which amino acid is transferred to tRNA without altering the other partial reaction in which ATP is a substrate or a product. The inactivation has been shown to be nonspecific with regard to substituents on the dialdehyde and with regard to the enzymes susceptible to inactivation; oxidized GTP and oxidized uridine react as well as oATP with aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases and all three dialdehydes also inactivate rabbit muscle aldolase.  相似文献

Larval drift of the trichopteran Rhyacophila nubila (Zett.) was studied in a West Norwegian river. The frequency distribution of different instars in the drift samples was significantly different compared with the benthic samples. The drift, measured as the number which passed a transect of the river, rised markedly in periods of high water discharge. Different instars can be arranged according to the extent in which they are drifting: 2>3>4>1>5. Instar 1 and 2 shared a neutral phototaxis. From the 2nd instar and on, the larvae became increasingly night-active with a culmination in the last instar which was highly night active, also confined by laboratory studies. It is suggested that changes in activity patterns is associated with a shift towards a more carnivorous way of life.  相似文献

We have examined growth responses of several species of marine phytoplankton, cultured with and without heavy metal stress, to supplements of polymeric polyphenols from the brown algae Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. and Fucus vesiculosus L. In the absence of additional heavy metals. supplements of up to 4000 μg. 1 of polyphenols had a small effect on initial growth rates for three of these microalgae and had no effect on maximum cell densities for four species. One very common, heavy metal-sensitive diatom, Skeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cl., showed significantly increasing maximum cell density in the cultures, with increasing addition of polyphenols to the medium. The toxicity of Zn2+ (0.5–2.0 mg·1 1) to cultures of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin was relieved by supplements (100–200 μg·1 1) of the brown algal polyphenols. Exudation of these polyphenols from brown seaweeds may contribute to the natural chelating capacity of inshore sea water.  相似文献

A structural component of mitotic chromosomes that partially explains the compaction of DNA within mitotic chromosomes is suggested on the basis of the occurrence of long, regular cylindrical structures in preparations of isolated human chromosomes. These structures, unit fibers, of a rather constant diameter of about 4,000 Å have been postulated to be formed by coiling of the 250T2–300 Å solenoid chromatin fiber that itself is formed by coiling of the 100 Å string of nucleosome fiber. The human chromatid would thus be composed by a hierarchy of helices with contraction ratios for DNA at each level of coiling of 7 (string of nucleosomes), 5 (solenoid) and 40 (4,000 Å unit fiber or super-solenoid) which results in an overall contraction ratio for DNA in the unit fiber structures of about 1,400, which is approximately 5-fold less than the final contraction of DNA in intact chromatids of condensed metaphase chromosomes. The present report concerns more detailed studies with respect to the dimensions and cytochemical properties of the unit fiber structures observed in preparations of isolated human mitotic chromosomes that provide direct and indirect evidence in support of their super-solenoid structure and relate to known properties of human mitotic chromosomes.  相似文献

To facilitate detailed studies of the B-cytotoxic action of alloxan we developed a model using isolated pancreatic islets of normal mice. An essential feature of this model is the low temperature employed during exposure to alloxan, which minimizes the degradation of the drug. The islets were incubated with alloxan for 30min at 4 degrees C and subsequently various aspects of their metabolism were studied. The O(2) consumption was measured by the Cartesian-diver technique. Islets exposed to 2mm-alloxan and control islets had the same endogenous respiration, whereas the O(2) uptake of the alloxan-treated islets was inhibited and that of the control islets stimulated when they were incubated with 28mm-glucose as an exogenous substrate. The islet glucose oxidation was estimated by measurement of the formation of (14)CO(2) from [U-(14)C]glucose at 37 degrees C. Compared with the controls, alloxan-treated islets showed a decrease in the glucose-oxidation rate in a dose-dependent manner. Pretreatment of the islets with 28mm-glucose for 30min at 37 degrees C completely protected against this effect, whereas preincubations at glucose concentrations below 16.7mm failed to exert any protective effect. The glucose utilization was estimated as the formation of (3)H(2)O from [5-(3)H]glucose. Alloxan (2mm) failed to affect islet glucoseutilization rate in the presence of either 2.8 or 28mm-glucose. In contrast, islets exposed to 5 or 10mm-alloxan exhibited lowered glucose utilization. It is concluded that in vitro alloxan has an acute inhibitory effect on the islet glucose metabolism, and that this action can be prevented by previous exposure to a high glucose concentration. The results are consistent with the idea that the B-cytotoxicity of alloxan reflects an interaction with intracellular sites involved in the oxidative metabolism of the B-cell.  相似文献

The combined effects of copper and zinc ions on the growth of three marine diatoms and one dinoflagellate in culture have been studied. The two metals were found to act synergistically to all algae except Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin. With this species an antagonistic effect was observed. Addition of zinc ions reduced the inhibition of growth caused by the more toxic copper ions. Zinc toxicity to this alga increased at low concentration of magnesium, indicating a common route for divalent metal ions in general.  相似文献

Summary The uptake of 3H-estradiol-17 in the neonatal mouse uterus and cervix has been studied by an autoradiographic method. When the radio-active hormone is administered in vivo and in vitro, grains are found to be concentrated above the nuclei both in the uterine and cervical epithelium and stroma. Grain counts revealed that the nuclear concentration of grains is higher at 4 h than at 2 h after isotope injection. The cervical epithelium has a higher nuclear concentration than the uterine epithelium both in vivo and in vitro. In the stroma, this situation is reversed except after in vitro treatment of the tissues.In the cervix, more of the hormone seems to be located within the nucleus while in the uterus a higher proportion of the grains are found in the vicinity of the nuclear periphery.Although the nuclear concentration of grains is higher at 4 h than at 2 h, the number of grains above the sections is lower at 4 h. Both in vivo and in vitro, the number of grains is higher above the stromal than above the epithelial compartments of the uterus and cervix.Five days old animals showed the same labeling pattern. The differences in uptake and distribution of 3H-estradiol are discussed in relation to other known differences in the hormone responsiveness in these tissues.We are greatly indebted to Professor W.E. Task partitioning is the decomposition of a task into two or more sub-tasks that can be tackled separately. Task partitioning can be observed in many species of social insects, as it is often an advantageous way of organizing the work of a group of individuals. Potential advantages of task partitioning are, among others: reduction of interference between workers, exploitation of individuals?? skills and specializations, energy efficiency, and higher parallelism. Even though swarms of robots can benefit from task partitioning in the same way as social insects do, only few works in swarm robotics are dedicated to this subject. In this paper, we study the case in which a swarm of robots has to tackle a task that can be partitioned into a sequence of two sub-tasks. We propose a method that allows the individual robots in the swarm to decide whether to partition the given task or not. The method is self-organized, relies on the experience of each individual, and does not require explicit communication between robots. We evaluate the method in simulation experiments, using foraging as testbed. We study cases in which task partitioning is preferable and cases in which it is not. We show that the proposed method leads to good performance of the swarm in both cases, by employing task partitioning only when it is advantageous. We also show that the swarm is able to react to changes in the environmental conditions by adapting the behavior on-line. Scalability experiments show that the proposed method performs well across all the tested group sizes.  相似文献

Material consisting of 157 accessions of 69 Finnish Taraxacum agamospecies, representing 7 sections, was grown in an experimental field for comparison of certain botanical and nutritional characteristics. This paper gives the collecting data as well as cytological and reproductive characteristics of the material. The largest section Taraxacum (Vulgariu ) was represented by 60 agamospecies, 59 of them triploid (2n = 24) and one tetraploid (T. penicilliforme , 2n = 32). The tetraploid and 37 triploids were chromosome counted for the first time. The diploid sexual species T. obtusilobum from Sweden was included for comparison. Other sections consisted of 3 triploids and 6 tetraploids, 3 tetraploid species of the section Erythrosperma being chromosome counted for the first time. Seedlings with deviating numbers were occasionally found. A banding technique of the chromosomes was developed but it did not allow the exact identification of other than the satellite chromosomes. Species-specific features were found in the flowering phenology and in several pollen characteristics (stainability, mean and variability of the size). There were indications of genetic variation within certain agamospecies in pollen characteristics. Isolated and emasculated (mostly only isolated) flower heads gave mostly a full seed set, which indicates obligate, autonomous agamospermy. Lower seed sets of T. adami, T. dahlstedtii and T. hamatiforme in isolation may be a sign of facultative apomixis in these species, requiring further study.  相似文献
