We present a novel analytical method for assessing spatial and temporal structure in community samples that is useful for comparing large data-sets that include species abundance data. The model assumes that species numbers in two samples are drawn from a bi-variate Poisson log-normal species abundance distribution and parameters from the fitted distribution are estimated to assess community structure. We assessed three tropical butterfly data-sets for spatial structure in the vertical dimension, and tested for changes in structure as a result of temporal variance, disturbance regimes, and geographic location. Our results indicate that the vertical dimension is a major structural component in tropical forest butterfly communities that varies little through time and is not measurably affected by small-scale disturbances. However, there is evidence that the degree of vertical structure may vary among geographic regions. These results are discussed in terms of the mechanisms maintaining vertical structure, and the implications of changes in forest architecture on butterfly communities. 相似文献

Age at first reproduction is an important determinant of individual variation in reproductive success in ungulates, but few studies have examined its relationship with later fitness‐related traits in males. We used a long‐term individual based study of a harvested moose population to quantify the individual reproductive performance and survival of males, as well as to examine the determinants of age at first reproduction and consequences of age at first reproduction on lifetime breeding success. The probability that a male successfully reproduced at the age of two was negatively related to the mean age of adult males in the population, but the relationship weakened with increasing population size. Large antlers and large body mass relative to other males in the population increased the number of calves sired at their first successful mating season. In addition, those that successfully reproduced as two year‐olds were more likely to sire calves the next year, making them more productive at a given age compared to those that first reproduced at the age of three or older. We emphasize the importance for males to start reproducing as soon as possible in a harvested population to gain lifetime fitness benefits, as surviving the hunt is a major determinant of reproductive success in this population. We found no costs of early reproduction in males, hence leading to high individual heterogeneity in male reproductive performance. The apparent lack of reproductive costs could partly be explained by the age distribution in the population, individual variation in early‐life body mass and antler size, and differences in probabilities of being hunted of successful and unsuccessful males. 相似文献

Partially migratory populations comprise both resident and migratory individuals. These tactics may coexist if their demographic contribution to future generations (i.e. fitness) are equal or vary temporally with environmental conditions, or if individuals switch between being migrant and resident. Alternatively, the choice of movement tactic can be based on individual attributes such as age, competitive ability or personality. In the latter cases, the two tactics are not expected to have similar average fitness. In this study, we examined the effect of movement tactic on reproductive performance and survival of 82 GPS‐marked female moose and their offspring in a partial migratory population in central Norway. The results indicated higher growth in the migrating part of the population because migrating females produced more twins than resident females. We found no differences in pregnancy rates or survival of adults or their offspring, indicating a net fitness benefit of being migrant. We found the average shoulder height of residents to be slightly lower than of migrants, but doubt that this affected their migration ability. A more likely explanation is that migratory females are both more fecund and grow bigger because of better conditions in their summer ranges. This may be a temporal phenomenon if the fitness differences between migratory and resident moose vary according to environmental fluctuations. 相似文献

When stored fish or some fish products were tested for the presence of Clostridium botulinum toxin, nonspecific toxic reactions in mice often occurred, rendering the bioassay inconclusive. The nonspecific toxic reactions were mediated by the gram-negative microbiota, inherent to the fish, which were the source of lethal, heat-stable endotoxins. The treatment of assay samples with bovine serum eliminated nonspecific reactions through the interaction of constituent serum immunoglobulin M (IgM) with endotoxic material. Removal of IgM from bovine serum through treatment with protein A or concanavalin A resulted in a loss of protective activity. 相似文献

The evolution of population dynamics in a stochastic environment is analysed under a general form of density-dependence with genetic variation in r and K, the intrinsic rate of increase and carrying capacity in the average environment, and in σe2, the environmental variance of population growth rate. The continuous-time model assumes a large population size and a stationary distribution of environments with no autocorrelation. For a given population density, N, and genotype frequency, p, the expected selection gradient is always towards an increased population growth rate, and the expected fitness of a genotype is its Malthusian fitness in the average environment minus the covariance of its growth rate with that of the population. Long-term evolution maximizes the expected value of the density-dependence function, averaged over the stationary distribution of N. In the θ-logistic model, where density dependence of population growth is a function of Nθ, long-term evolution maximizes E[Nθ]=[1−σe2/(2r)]Kθ. While σe2 is always selected to decrease, r and K are always selected to increase, implying a genetic trade-off among them. By contrast, given the other parameters, θ has an intermediate optimum between 1.781 and 2 corresponding to the limits of high or low stochasticity. 相似文献

Proteins in sonic extracts of Streptococcus lactis were separated by starch-gel electrophoresis at high voltage. Each slab was sliced longitudinally, and half was stained for peptidases in a mixture containing a peptide, L-amino acid oxidase (snake venom), peroxidase, and o-dianisdine; the other half was stained in amido black for protein. In addition to sonic treatment, trypsin also released enzyme from acetone-treated cells. Glycyl-L-phenylalanine, L-phenylalanyl-glycine, L-alanyl-L-phenylalanine, and L-phenylalanyl-L-alanine served as substrates in characterizing the enzymes. Five different fractions of various specificities appeared in the gels. Broad-range substrate specificities were found for sonic extracts of S. lactis, S. cremoris, S. durans, and Lactobacillus acidophilus. 相似文献

DiGIR2 is the group I splicing-ribozyme of the mobile twin-ribozyme intron Dir.S956-1, present in Didymium nuclear ribosomal DNA. DiGIR2 is responsible for intron excision, exon ligation, 3'-splice site hydrolysis, and full-length intron RNA circle formation. We recently reported that DiGIR2 splicing (intron excision and exon ligation) competes with hydrolysis and subsequent full-length intron circularization. Here we present experimental evidence that hydrolysis at the 3'-splice site in DiGIR2 is dependent on structural elements within the P9 subdomain not involved in splicing. Whereas the GCGA tetra-loop in P9b was found to be important in hydrolytic cleavage, probably due to tertiary RNA-RNA interactions, the P9.2 hairpin structure was found to be essential for hydrolysis. The most important positions in P9.2 include three adenosines in the terminal loop (L9.2) and a consensus kink-turn motif in the proximal stem. We suggest that the L9.2 adenosines and the kink-motif represent key regulatory elements in the splicing and hydrolytic reaction pathways. 相似文献
