The universality of the shape of the species–area relationship (SAR) is subject to regular debate. Recently, Storch et al. (2012) argued that species–area relationships collapse into a single curve at continental scales after the axes are rescaled adjusting the area‐axis being to the mean range size of species and the species‐axis to the species richness of an area equal to mean range size. It has been claimed that this rescaling generates a universal model, invariant of taxon and continent, and that it is driven by differences in range sizes. Here, we test the universality of the rescaled SAR across scales smaller than the continental level, using presence data for plants, birds and butterflies. We also test an alternative rescaling approach, by using the total extent of the study area and total species richness. At the scales analysed here, we found that the proposed rescaling by Storch et al. adjusts for differences in the extent of the study area and for variation in gamma diversity. Consequently, while the rescaled curves were closely aligned, they did not converge into a single curve. The observed remaining variation is independent of scale and biogeographical region, and is correlated with beta diversity; thus, it reflects the differentiation of species composition in space.  相似文献

Different environmental factors act as driving forces of diversity at different scales of analysis; and also the effect of one environmental factor changes as the scale of analysis changes. Most studies rely on multiple regression models, and such models tend to mix-up the effect of all factors and assume that factors effects are additive. We believe that the effect of environment on diversity should be characterized by a hierarchical structure with coarse scale factors, like geographical tropics to poles gradients, defining the envelope of possible diversity conditions, and other more local factors, like habitat structure, being responsible for the fine tuning of diversity. This structure is most efficiently modeled with regression trees. We show that for six habitat types in Greek protected areas regression tree models were able to describe plant species richness based upon environmental factors considerably more efficiently than multiple regression models. More importantly when the models were extrapolated to other sites in Greece, outside their domain, the differences between the predictive ability of the two approaches was magnified. The tree models picked up important ecological characteristics, and a hierarchical structure that used coarse scale factors, like latitude and longitude, for the coarse scale estimate of alpha diversity, and finer scale factors like fragmentation, for the fine-tuning of the estimation. Therefore, we advocate that the regression tree methodology is most appropriate for modeling the relationship between diversity and environmental factors, and the use of the classical regression approaches might be misleading.  相似文献

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a clinical disorder resulting from the compression of the median nerve. The available evidence regarding the association between computer use and CTS is controversial. There is some evidence that computer mouse or keyboard work, or both are associated with the development of CTS. Despite the availability of pressure measurements in the carpal tunnel during computer work (exposure to keyboard or mouse) there are no available data to support a direct effect of the increased intracarpal canal pressure on the median nerve.  相似文献

This study investigated phosphatidylinositol-3-OH-kinase (PI3-kinase) involvement in the induction of cadmium-mediated oxidative effects on hemocytes of mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. PI3-kinase was investigated with the use of wortmannin, a specific covalent inhibitor of PI3-kinase. Moreover, phorbol-myristate acetate (PMA), a well-known protein kinase C (PKC)-mediated NADPH oxidase and nitric oxide (NO) synthase stimulator, was also used for elucidating PI3-kinase involvement during the respiratory burst process in challenge hemocytes. According to the results, cells pre-treated with non-toxic concentrations of wortmannin (1 and/or 50 nM, as revealed by neutral red retention assay) for 15 min, showed a significant attenuation of cadmium ability (at concentration of 50 μM) to promote cell death, superoxide anion (O(2)(-)) production, NO generation and lipid peroxidation (in terms of malondialdehyde equivalents). On the other hand, wortmannin-treated cells showed a significant attenuation of PMA ability to induce NO generation but not O(2)(-) production. These findings reveal that PI3-kinase could lead to a PKC-independent induction of NO synthase activity in cells faced with pro-oxidants, such as cadmium, while its activation could be fundamental for the regulation of NAPDH oxidase activity, probably through a PKC-dependent signaling pathway.  相似文献

We analysed the dynamics of a plant-pollinator interaction network of a scrub community surveyed over four consecutive years. Species composition within the annual networks showed high temporal variation. Temporal dynamics were also evident in the topology of the network, as interactions among plants and pollinators did not remain constant through time. This change involved both the number and the identity of interacting partners. Strikingly, few species and interactions were consistently present in all four annual plant-pollinator networks (53% of the plant species, 21% of the pollinator species and 4.9% of the interactions). The high turnover in species-to-species interactions was mainly the effect of species turnover (c. 70% in pairwise comparisons among years), and less the effect of species flexibility to interact with new partners (c. 30%). We conclude that specialization in plant-pollinator interactions might be highly overestimated when measured over short periods of time. This is because many plant or pollinator species appear as specialists in 1 year, but tend to be generalists or to interact with different partner species when observed in other years. The high temporal plasticity in species composition and interaction identity coupled with the low variation in network structure properties (e.g. degree centralization, connectance, nestedness, average distance and network diameter) imply (i) that tight and specialized coevolution might not be as important as previously suggested and (ii) that plant-pollinator interaction networks might be less prone to detrimental effects of disturbance than previously thought. We suggest that this may be due to the opportunistic nature of plant and animal species regarding the available partner resources they depend upon at any particular time.  相似文献

Introduction: The nociceptive flexion reflex threshold (NFRT) is a promising tool to monitor analgesia during general anaesthesia. Clinical studies have shown that the NFRT allows to predict movement responses to painful stimuli under a combined anaesthetic regime of sedative and opioid agents. Experimental studies indicated that the NFRT is also able to predict such movement responses under an exclusively sedative regime like propofol mono-anaesthesia. Therefore, we performed this study to investigate the ability of the NFRT to predict movement responses to painful stimuli in patients during a clinical propofol mono-anaesthesia.

Methods: We investigated 140 cardiac surgery patients during their postoperative phase under propofol mono-anaesthesia. NFRT and bispectral index (BIS) were determined in each patient right before endotracheal suctioning or painful electrical test stimulation. Prediction probabilities were calculated to quantify how accurate each measure is able to predict movement responses to the stimuli.

Results: The 124 patients included in the analysis received a median propofol dosage of 3.2 (2.5–3.9) [median (IQR)] mg/kg/h. The included patients showed 287 movement responses after a total of 725 investigated stimuli. The prediction probabilities for positive movement responses were 0.63 (95%CI: 0.59–0.67) for the NFRT and 0.69 (95%CI: 0.65–0.73) for the BIS.

Conclusions: The NFRT allows the prediction of movement responses under propofol mono-anaesthesia, which confirms its utility as a monitor to predict movement responses under general anaesthesia. The BIS allows an even more accurate prediction, although it does not reflect the physiological structures of movement suppression, but correlates closely with the dose of propofol.

Bacterial intraceUular symbiosis is very common in insects, having significant consequences in promoting the evolution of life and biodiversity. The bacterial group that has recently attracted particular attention is Wolbachia pipientis which probably represents the most ubiquitous endosymbiont on the planet. W. pipientis is a Gram-negative obligatory intracellular and maternally transmitted a-proteobacterium, that is able to establish symbiotic associations with arthropods and nematodes. In arthropods, Wolbachia pipientis infections have been described in Arachnida, in Isopoda and mainly in Insecta. They have been reported in almost all major insect orders including Diptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Orthoptera and Lepidoptera. To enhance its transmission, W. pipientis can manipulate host reproduction by inducing parthenogenesis, feminization, male killing and cytoplasmic incompatibility. Several polymerase chain reaction surveys have indicated that up to 70% of all insect species may be infected with W. pipientis. How does W. pipientis manage to get established in diverse insect host species? How is this intracellular bacterial symbiont species so successful in escaping the host immune response? The present review presents recent advances and ongoing scientific efforts in the field. The current body of knowledge in the field is summarized, revelations from the available genomic information are presented and as yet unanswered questions are discussed in an attempt to present a comprehensive picture of the unique ability of W. pipientis to establish symbiosis and to manipulate reproduction while evading the host's immune system.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to elucidate the events that are involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and DNA damage after adrenergic receptors stimulation by cadmium, in relation to cAMP, protein kinase C (PKC) and Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE). Cadmium (50 microM) caused increased levels of ROS with a concomitant increase in DNA damage in digestive gland of Mytilus galloprovincialis. Either the use of EIPA, a NHE blocker, or calphostin C, the inhibitor of PKC, reduced cadmium effects. Cells treated with alpha1-, alpha2-, beta- and beta1- adrenergic antagonists together with cadmium reversed cadmium alone effects, while the respective adrenergic agonists, phenylephrine and isoprenaline, mimic cadmium effects. Moreover, cadmium caused an increase in the levels of cAMP in digestive gland cells that were reversed after NHE and PKC inhibition as well as in the presence of each type of adrenergic antagonist. The different sensitivity of alpha1-, alpha2-, beta-, beta1- adrenergic receptors on ROS, cAMP production and DNA damage possibly leads to the induction of two signaling pathways that may be interacting or to the presence of a compensatory pathway that acts in concert with the alpha- and beta- adrenergic receptors. In these signaling pathways PKC and NHE play significant role.  相似文献

The postexercise urine lactate concentration is a novel valid exercise biomarker, which has exhibited satisfactory reliability in the morning hours under controlled water intake. The aim of the present study was to investigate the diurnal variation of the postexercise urine lactate concentration and its reliability in the afternoon hours. Thirty-two healthy children (11 boys and 21 girls) and 23 adults (13 men and 10 women) participated in the study. All participants performed two identical sessions of eight 25 m bouts of maximal freestyle swimming executed every 2 min with passive recovery in between. These sessions were performed in the morning and afternoon and were separated by 3–4 days. Adults performed an additional afternoon session that was also separated by 3–4 days. All swimmers drank 500 mL of water before and another 500 mL after each test. Capillary blood and urine samples were collected before and after each test for lactate determination. Urine creatinine, urine density and body water content were also measured. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used as a reliability index between the morning and afternoon tests, as well as between the afternoon test and retest. Swimming performance and body water content exhibited excellent reliability in both children and adults. The postexercise blood lactate concentration did not show diurnal variation, showing a good reliability between the morning and afternoon tests, as well as high reliability between the afternoon test and retest. The postexercise urine density and lactate concentration were affected by time of day. However, when lactate was normalized to creatinine, it exhibited excellent reliability in children and good-to-high reliability in adults. The postexercise urine lactate concentration showed high reliability between the afternoon test and retest, independent of creatinine normalization. The postexercise blood and urine lactate concentrations were significantly correlated in all cases, attesting to the validity of urine lactate as an index of anaerobic metabolism. We conclude that urine lactate, after normalization to creatinine, could be used in training practice either in the morning or in the afternoon. Further research is needed to assess the applicability of this novel exercise biomarker.  相似文献
