We compared the feeding excavations on wood blocks of three species of subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), and R. virginicus (Banks). Feeding rate followed the order C. formosanus > R. flavipes > R. virginicus. Wood surface area (mm2) exposed per unit feeding was higher for C. formosanus and R. flavipes than for R. virginicus. This was caused by the tendency of C. formosanus and R. flavipes to make internally penetrating tunnels, thereby increasing surface area, whereas R. virginicus made trough- and bowl-like depressions on the outside of blocks, sometimes decreasing the size of blocks outwardly without a corresponding high increase in surface area typical with the tunnels of the other species. Consequently, wood surface area was sometimes reduced, rather than increased as a result of feeding by R. virginicus. Different patterns of wood excavation suggest that these termites have divergent roles in wood decay processes.
Résumé Les organismes pionniers qui modifient le bois et le rendent acceptable par les insectes qui le perforent sont généralement des champignons du bois pourri. Cependant, une fois que les termites ou autres insectes perforant le bois ont pénétré, leurs galeries favorisent les bactéries fixatrices d'azote, permettent l'invasion d'autres organismes décomposeurs, et de ce fait régularisent la décomposition du bois (Ausmus, 1977). L'exposition de la surface à l'intérieur des perforations jouant un rôle très important dans le processus de pourrissement, il est souhaitable de pouvoir quantifier la surface des galeries dues à l'alimentation des termites. Une courbe type permettant de prédire l'aire de la surface perforée a été construite en perçant 109 morceaux de bois de trous cylindriques de différents diamètres, en calculant l'aire de la surface des morceaux de bois, en appliquant et pesant une couche de vernis pour bois au polyuréthane, et en divisant la masse de polyuréthane par l'aire de la surface. Le modèle prédictif qui en découle est: Y=0,01443×-3,51825 (P=0,0001; r=0,68), y étant la masse de polyuréthane (en g) et x la surface (en mm2) du morceau de bois. En traitant de la même façon au polyuréthane les morceaux de bois perforés par les termites, nous pourrions déduire leur surface.Une expérience a été effectuée avec 3 espèces de rhinotermitides,- Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) et R. virginicus (Banks). Des groupes de chaque espèce se sont alimentés pendant 11 ou 12 jours sur des morceaux de bois non contaminés par des champignons. Nous avons déterminé la survie, la consommation, la modification de la surface du morceau de bois (par utilisation du modèle prédictif) et le changement de surface par terminte.La survie est la même, mais la consommation est dans l'ordre suivant: C. formosanus > R. flavipes > R. virginicus. L'aire de la surface exposée par unité d'alimentation était plus élevée pour C. formosanus et R. flavipes que pour R. virginicus (Tab. 1). Ceci est dû à la tendance de C. formosanus et R. flavipes de creuser des galeries vers l'intérieur, tandis que R. virginicus fait des cuvettes à la surface du bois. Les attaques superficielles de R. virginicus réduisent parfois le volume du morceau de bois sans accroître proportionnellement la surface comme le font les espèces creusant des galeries. Ainsi, avec R. virginicus la surface peut être réduite au lieu d'augmenter. Des différences entre colonies s'observent avec toutes les variables (Tab. 2).Nos résultats suggèrent que C. formosanus et R. flavipes contribuent plus que R. virginicus à exposer le bois aux autres organismes décomposeurs. The current model of poliovirus morphogenesis postulates a fundamental role for procapsid, 80S shells that, upon interaction with viral RNA and subsequent proteolytic cleavage, give rise to complete virus particles. Although 80S sedimenting particles can, indeed, be isolated from cytoplasmic extracts of infected cells, their physical properties differ from those reported for procapsids. Far from being stable structures, they can be dissociated by pH 8.5 and 0.1% sodium dodecyl sulfate into slower-sedimenting subunits. The reasons for this discrepancy were investigated, and two main modalities leading to the appearance of procapsids in vitro were identified. The first involves a temperature-mediated conversion of dissociable 80S particles into stable 80S procapsids, and the second involves the self-assembly of endogenous 14S subunits, also primed by an increase in the temperature of cytoplasmic extracts. 相似文献

A 50-year-old man presented with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOC) associated with a left ventricular aneurysm and normal coronary arteries. His history revealed no evidence of myocardial infarction or atypical angina. Physical examination disclosed HOC but did not suggest the presence of an aneurysm. Although the patient was treated medically, heart failure ensued, and he died suddenly while working his farm. Subsequent investigation of the patient's family revealed that three of his five children were also affected by cardiomyopathy, which was especially pronounced in the eldest, a 22-year-old man. The possible hemodynamic relationship between HOC and left ventricular aneurysm is discussed, along with probable indications. The role of left ventricular aneurysm is also presented in relation to the natural history of the disease. 相似文献

Although considerable attention has been devoted to the urea-hydrolyzing activity of Ureaplasma urealyticum, there is as yet no firmly established function for this enzyme. The spermatogenesis of 9 F1 hybrids of Triturus cristatus carnifex × T. vulgaris meridionalis was studied in squash preparations of testicular fragments, treated by the C-staining method. The chromosome number of these hybrids was examined in spermatogonial metaphases and found to be diploid. The two parental sets were always recognized, which means that a regular, although heterospecific, amphimixis occurred (2n=n+n). Meiotic prophase I is greatly altered owing to a failure of typical chromosome pairing and chiasma formation. At metaphase I and/or meta-anaphase I, the effects of the hybrid combination of the 2 specific parental sets are clearly visible. Most primary spermatocytes contain only univalents. A few show chromosome associations (bivalents, trivalents and, more rarely, quadrivalent chains) besides univalents. Such associations are of 2 types: (a) intragenomal associations = associations of 2 chromosomes by a terminal (a1) or subterminal chiasma (a2); (b) intergenomal associations = associations of 2 chromosomes by a terminal (b1) or subterminal chiasma (b2). Univalents segregate at random while the associations often lag on the equatorial plane or migrate entire to a spindle pole. Primary spermatocytes with chromosome multivalents can encounter greater difficulties in accomplishing the first cytokinesis. Secondary spermatocytes are numerically and qualitatively unbalanced; however, some of them undergo spermiogenesis and can give rise to a small number of sperms, generally abnormal and never united in bundles. — Problems related to the occurrence of anomalous chiasmata and of intra- and inter-genomal homologies are discussed. 相似文献

In order to study the mechanism of the glutamate-aspartate translocator, rat liver mitochondria were loaded with either glutamate or aspartate. In the presence of ascorbate plus tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine as an electron donor at the third energy conservation site, exchange of external glutamate for matrix aspartate is highly favored over the reverse exchange. In the absence of an energy source, although the asymmetry of the exchange rates is much smaller, it is still observable. Further studies have shown that the proton uptake accompanying influx of glutamate in exchange for aspartate efflux occurs by protonation of a group on the carrier (pK = 7.9) at the external side of the inner mitochondrial membrane, followed by deprotonation at the matrix surface. It is postulated that glutamate binds to the protonated form of the carrier and aspartate to the deprotonated form. Because of the alkaline pK, aspartate efflux is inhibited with increased matrix [H+] due to limitation of the availability of deprotonated carrier for aspartate binding. For the reverse exchange, aspartate uptake is inhibited by increasing external [H+]. Thus the rate of aspartate uptake by mitochondria is apparently impeded both by a proton motive force (Δp) unfavorable to entry of ions with net negative charge as well as by the small proportion of deprotonated carrier at the outer surface of the membrane. This conclusion is further illustrated by inhibition of the aspartate-aspartate exchange with increased [H+] and by addition of an energy source. The glutamate-glutamate exchange, however, showed a slight stimulation by increased [H+] and was unaffected by the energy state.The model initially proposed for the carrier, in which a neutral glutamate-carrier complex exchanges for a negatively charged aspartate-carrier complex, is tested further. Glutamate uptake was noncompetitively inhibited by external aspartate, which indicates that aspartate and glutamate bind to separate forms of the carrier. Intramitochrondrial glutamate at a concentration of 18 mm, however, had no effect on aspartate efflux. Arrhenius plots for the glutamate-aspartate and aspartate-glutamate exchanges were linear over the range of temperatures tested (1–35 °C and 5–25 °C, respectively) and provided an average value of 14.3 kcal/mol for the energy of activation. In addition, there appear to be two pools, exchangeable and nonexchangeable, of matrix aspartate available to the translocator, since extramitochondrial radiolabeled aspartate can equilibrate only with unlabeled matrix aspartate at low aspartate loading (1–2 nmol of aspartate/mg of protein). A method for calculating the mass transfer coefficient in a biological film system, under turbulent flow conditions, is presented. It is experimentally found that fluid velocity has a positive effect on the rate of substrate utilization when the system is operated in other than the kinetic regime. Constitutive heterochromatin and euchromatin fractions from normal and avian sarcoma virus transformed cells of Mus musculur and Microtus agrestis were isolated in order to characterize the site of integration of the viral specific DNA sequences. The transformed mouse (BALB/c 3T3-B77) and M. agrestis (UMMA-RSV-21) cell lines, as well as a revertant clone of the M. agrestis (UMMA-RSV-R-4) were found to have integrated 1–2 viral copies per diploid genome. The number of viral copies was studied by the technique of DNA-DNA hybridization in solution, and in all cases the viral sequences were located in the euchromatin fraction. 相似文献
