Understanding the origin of seasonal epidemics of mycoplasmal conjunctivitis

1.?Many host-pathogen systems show regular seasonal oscillations. 2.?Seasonal variation in mycoplasmal conjunctivitis prevalence in house finches is an example of such oscillations. 3.?An annual pulse of Mycoplasma gallisepticum-na?ve juveniles increasing the number of susceptibles, seasonal changes in flocking behaviour increasing transmission rate and a gradual loss of resistance to reinfection with time are sufficient to model the observed seasonal variation in disease prevalence. Nevertheless, experiments are needed to test the underlying mechanisms. 4.?We carried out an 18-month experiment with small groups of birds in large aviaries to test two hypotheses. 5.?To test the first hypothesis that an influx of na?ve juveniles in a group of recovered adults is sufficient to cause an outbreak, we added eight juveniles to a group of 11 adults that had recovered from an earlier infection. In all, three replicates juveniles became infected, but only after some of the adults relapsed. 6.?To test the second hypothesis that reintroduction of M.?gallisepticum into a multiage group of previously exposed but fully recovered house finches causes a new outbreak, we inoculated two birds in each group in March of the 2nd year. Contrary to what happens in the wild at that time disease prevalence increased rapidly after reintroduction of M.?gallisepticum. 7.?We conclude that asymptomatic, recovered adults can initiate an epidemic and transmit M.?gallisepticum to na?ve house finches and that the reintroduction of M.?gallisepticum is sufficient to cause a new outbreak, even at a time of the year when mycoplasmal conjunctivitis is low in free-living birds. Date, as such, seems to be less important to explain seasonal variation in conjunctivitis than the presence of na?ve juveniles or the introduction on M.?gallisepticum. 8.?Seasonality in outbreaks is most likely tightly linked to seasonal variation in bird movements and behaviour.     

XP-A cells complemented with Arg228Gln and Val234Leu polymorphic XPA alleles repair BPDE-induced DNA damage better than cells complemented with the wild type allele

Functional effects of Arg228Gln and Val2343Leu XPA polymorphisms on benzo[a]pyrene-r-7,t-8-dihydrodiol-t-9,10-epoxide-(+/-)-anti (BPDE) survival and repair were investigated in SV40 immortalized XP12RO cells complemented with wild type and polymorphic XPA cDNAs in an inducible cDNA expression system. In contrast to previous studies showing little impact of XPA polymorphisms on UV survival and repair, cells complemented with polymorphic XPAs displayed improved BPDE survival and repair as compared to wild type XPA-complemented cells. Survival after BPDE treatment was measured using AlamarBlue reduction and colony forming ability. Cells expressing low levels of either polymorphic XPA had equivalent or improved survival compared to wild type XPA-complemented cells (XPAwt cells). XPA induction improved BPDE survival in Arg228Gln (R228Q cells) and Val234Leu (V234L cells) complemented cells, but not XPAwt cells. BPDE-induced DNA damage repair was measured both by reactivation after transfection of a luciferase reporter plasmid reacted with BPDE in vitro, and by removal of adducts from genomic DNA of BPDE-treated cells. BPDE-induced DNA damage repair in R228Q and V234L cells expressing XPA at very low levels was similar to repair in XPAwt cells expressing XPA at normal levels. XPA induction improved repair in R228Q and V234L cells but not in XPAwt cells. Our findings suggest that both Arg228Gln and Val234Leu XPAs function better than wild type XPA for BPDE adduct removal. These observations differ from UV repair results suggesting that the differences are lesion specific. The location of the polymorphisms within the putative poly(ADP-ribose) binding domain suggests that poly(ADP-ribose) interaction is important in repair.     

Cytoscape ESP: simple search of complex biological networks

SUMMARY: Cytoscape enhanced search plugin (ESP) enables searching complex biological networks on multiple attribute fields using logical operators and wildcards. Queries use an intuitive syntax and simple search line interface. ESP is implemented as a Cytoscape plugin and complements existing search functions in the Cytoscape network visualization and analysis software, allowing users to easily identify nodes, edges and subgraphs of interest, even for very large networks. Dream Bizarreness and Inner Thought

The paper offers a critique of bizarreness studies that compare dreams to real world probability ratios and directed thought processes as a basis for determining the degree of bizarreness in dreams. It examines two cases from the literature and suggests that dreams are better compared to non-directed, or imaginative waking thought processes, specifically Inner Thought and Speech (or speech for oneself, in Lev Vygotsky's definition), in which associative mechanisms operate freely hand in hand with (primarily) visual imagery before logical thought mechanisms come into play. The article suggests that dreams create a world order, or umwelt, with its own distinct cognitive domain in which waking considerations of efficiency, logic, and common sense are only thematically relevant. Dreams follow their own logic and can only be approached as thought-in-progress, or a search for coherence leading up many blind alleys. Finally, the relevance to dreams of the Inner Thought principle of predication, or abbreviation is examined.
