New Japanese Rubella Vaccine: Comparative Trials

A total of 142 seronegative volunteers were given one of the following rubella vaccines: Cendehill, HPV77. DE-5, RA27/3, or a new Japanese vaccine, To-336. To-336 vaccine produced a slightly higher geometric mean antibody titre (G.M.T.) (65·7) than did the HPV77. DE-5 (63·1) or RA27/3 vaccine (61·9) but the G.M.T. induced by Cendehill vaccine was much lower (39·3).Reactions, particularly joint symptoms, occurred least commonly after vaccination with To-336 vaccine. Joint symptoms occurred within seven days of menstruation in 30 out of 37 (81%) vaccines (P <0·01); their incidence was not related to oral contraception.Though there is evidence to suggest that Japanese virus strains may be non-teratogenic further data on the incidence of congenitally acquired infection in Japan must be collected before this conclusion can be supported on epidemiological grounds.     

Studies on the kinetics of reaction and hydrolysis of fluorescamine

The influence of various parameters on the rate of reaction of fluorescamine with primary amines and on the rate of hydrolysis of the reagent is described. The studies indicate that both are dependent on the reaction conditions, including pH, solvent in which the reagent is prepared, temperature, reagent concentration, and buffer salt. Under any set of conditions the reaction rates vary with the amines. A correlation between reaction rate and extent of fluorophor formation has been demonstrated. Kinetic evidence for a multistep reaction mechanism, as well as values for the kinetic constants, are presented.     

Studies on the reaction of fluorescamine with primary amines

Fluorescamine is a useful reagent for the fluorometric assay of primary amines. The extent of the reaction between fluorescamine and primary amines, as well as the fluorescence intensities of the resulting fluorophors depend on pH, solvent composition and reagent concentration. Optimum values for these variables further depend on the amine under study. The influence of these parameters on the fluorogenic reaction of representative amines, and on their fluorophoric derivatives has been investigated, and the results are reported here.     

Detection of Gas Leaks in an Anaerobic Glove Box

An inert gas, Freon, can be added to the atmosphere of an anaerobic glove box without deleterious effect to cultures of anaerobic microorganisms. The sensitive probe of a Halogen Leak Detector passing over the outside surface of the box will pinpoint any escaping Freon and therefore locate the leak.
