One hundred and forty-four Chinchorro skeletons, stored at the Museo Arqueol?ogico San Miguel de Azapa in Arica, Chile, were examined to test the following alternative hypotheses concerning skeletal trauma: either observed trauma was a consequence of interpersonal violence, or was the result of work-related accidents. Trauma found in subadults was rare, with 1.8% (1/55) contrasted with 30% (27/89) in the adult population. The location of most adult trauma was the skull with 24.6% (17/69), followed by the upper extremities with 8. 7% (7/80), the trunk with 2.9% (2/68), and the lower extremities with the least trauma at 1.1% (1/89). Skull trauma corresponded to well-healed, semicircular fractures, with males being three times more affected than females at 34.2% (13/38) and 12.9% (4/31), respectively. Most fractures were nonlethal, appearing to have been caused by impacts from stones, suggesting interpersonal violence rather than accidents. This study indicates that the egalitarian, maritime, hunter-gatherer Chinchorro culture (circa 4000 years B.P.) may not have lived as peacefully as once thought.  相似文献

The quest for the origin and dispersion of Chagas' disease, the second most important vector-borne disease in Latin America, has epidemiological, immunological, and genetical implications. Conjectures based on accounts of chroniclers, reviews of the archaeological literature and the present distribution of triatomine bugs, the vectors of the disease, held that the origin of the adaptation of Triatoma infestans (aspecies of the subfamily Triatominae) to human dwellings occurred in prehistoric times. The autopsy of 35 mummies exhumed in the Chilean desert, dated between 470 B.C. and 600 A.D., revealed the presence of clinical manifestations of Chagas' disease and put earlier speculations on a factual basis.  相似文献

ATP-dependent potassium channels are present at high density in the membranes of heart, skeletal, and smooth muscle and have a lowP open at physiological [ATP]i. The unitary conductance is 15–20 pS at physiological [K+] o , and the channels are highly selective for K+. Certain sulfonylureas are specific blockers, and some K channel openers may also act through these channels. KATP channels are probably regulated through the binding of ATP, which may in turn be regulated through changes in the ADP/ATP ratio or in pHi. There is some evidence for control through G-proteins. The channels have complex kinetics, with multiple open and closed states. The main effect of ATP is to increase occupancy of long-lived closed states. The channels may have a role in the control of excitability and probably act as a route for K+ loss from muscle during activity. In arterial smooth muscle they may act as targets for vasodilators.  相似文献

The emergent aquatic plant, Sagittaria cuneata, is an easily-identified and commonly-found species in the Great Plains region of North America and has the potential to be a bioindicator of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) because of its previously-identified leaf plasticity in response to nutrient conditions. To identify associations between leaf morphology and soil and water nutrients, we conducted: (1) a 10-week controlled experiment in which plants were grown in nutrient-enriched sediment, nutrient-enriched water, or unamended control trials, and (2) a field study where emergent leaves were collected from 15 streams of varying nutrient concentrations. Plants grown in experimentally enriched sediment were more productive than those grown in enriched water or control conditions: they produced more emergent leaves and tubers, had a larger final biomass and height, and developed emergent leaves that showed a consistent increase in size and unique change in shape over time. Emergent leaves collected from field plants also showed significant variability of leaf traits; however, this variability occurred at all scales of replication (leaf, plant, quadrat, and site), with linear mixed effects modelling indicating that random chance was likely driving this variability. Although sediment nutrients were crucial to successful growth of S. cuneata under controlled conditions, the high variability in leaf morphology under field conditions (likely due to large natural variability at the species, population, and individual scale) make leaf plasticity of S. cuneata unsuitable as a bioindicator. Our results emphasize the need to quantify within and among plant variation in leaf morphology (and to clarify sampling methods) for the many taxa of aquatic macrophytes that are phenotypically plastic and notoriously difficult to classify.  相似文献

Summary The development of noradrenergic innervation was studied in the mouse heart using fluorescence histochemistry. Following incubation of hearts with -methylnoradrenaline fluorescent nerve fibres were seen as early as 13 days in utero. Thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) is the first choice procedure for differentiating between benign and malignant/suspicious lesions. Despite being highly sensitive and specific, it unfortunately has high inadequacy rates, with false‐negatives reported in most series. The fundamental contribution of the aspirator's skill, experience and expertise to inadequacy rates is well documented, differing between both individuals and aspirator groups. We performed a retrospective audit comparing inadequacy rates of cytopathologists and clinicians for all thyroid FNAs performed from 2002–2005 within the Hammersmith Hospitals Trust. A crude cost‐effectiveness was estimated, and using histological data where available, positive and negative powers (65.5% and 87.9% respectively), sensitivity (61.5%) and specificity (89.7%) were calculated. Pathologists were found to have significantly (P = 0.001) lower inadequacy rates (2.8%) than clinicians (16.1%) and were also more cost‐effective (non‐significant), with micropapillary carcinomas and lymphomas being identified as the main sources of false‐negatives. We thus propose updated protocols to reduce inadequacy and false‐negative rates, improve thyroid cancer diagnosis and the quality of patient care within our centre.  相似文献

Appropriate partitioning of nutrients between the mother and conceptus is a major determinant of pregnancy success, with placental transfer playing a key role. Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) increase in the maternal circulation during early pregnancy and are predictive of fetal and placental growth. We have previously shown in the guinea pig that increasing maternal IGF abundance in early to midpregnancy enhances fetal growth and viability near term. We now show that this treatment promotes placental transport to the fetus, fetal substrate utilization, and nutrient partitioning near term. Pregnant guinea pigs were infused with IGF-I, IGF-II (both 1 mg.kg-1.day-1) or vehicle subcutaneously from days 20-38 of pregnancy (term=69 days). Tissue uptake and placental transfer of the nonmetabolizable radio analogs [3H]methyl-D-glucose (MG) and [14C]aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) in vivo was measured on day 62. Early pregnancy exposure to elevated maternal IGF-I increased placental MG uptake by>70% (P=0.004), whereas each IGF increased fetal plasma MG concentrations by 40-50% (P<0.012). Both IGFs increased fetal tissue MG uptake (P<0.048), whereas IGF-I also increased AIB uptake by visceral organs (P=0.046). In the mother, earlier exposure to either IGF increased AIB uptake by visceral organs (P<0.014), whereas IGF-I also enhanced uptake of AIB by muscle (P=0.044) and MG uptake by visceral organs (P=0.016) and muscle (P=0.046). In conclusion, exogenous maternal IGFs in early pregnancy sustainedly increase maternal substrate utilization, placental transport of MG to the fetus, and fetal utilization of substrates near term. This was consistent with the previously observed increase in fetal growth and survival following IGF treatment.  相似文献

Over one thousand prehistoric crania (n = 1,149) from northern Chile were analyzed to determine if the presence of external auditory exostosis (EAE) was a type of subsistence-induced pathology, a consequence of habitual fishing i the cold water of the Pacific Ocean, rather than genetically determined. To test this occupational hypothesis, the sample was divided according to chronology, type of economy, site elevation, and sex. The crania came from 43 sites, including the coast, lowland valleys (100–2,000 m), and highlands (2,000 to 4,000 m) with a time frame of 7,000 B.C. to the Inca era (1500 A.D.). There was a significant association between EAE, environment, and sex. The coastal inhabitants had the highest prevalence of EAE with 30.7% (103/336), followed by 2.3% (6/264) for the valley people and 0% (0/549) for highlanders. Coastal and valley men were significantly more affected than their female counterparts. Contrary to expectations, there was nonsignificant association between EAE and economy and/or chronology. In the Arica area, the early Chinchorro fishers, without agriculture, had 27.7% (26/94) EAE, the subsequent agro-pastoralists, 42.7% (32/75), and the late Arican agro-pastoral fishers had 35.6% (36/101) EAE. Apparently, with the advent of agriculture, the coastal Arican populations increased their ocean harvests, rather than decreased them, to gain a surplus in order to trade with nonmaritime groups.
