1. Simple mechanical models (random walks and the 'gas model') were used to investigate the movement patterns and intergroup encounter rates of a high- and low-density subpopulation of Grey-Cheeked Mangabeys ( Cercocebus albigena johnstoni, Lydeker) at two sites in the Kibale Forest, Western Uganda.
2. Random walk simulations showed that the presence of conspecific groups could act as 'social barriers' which constrained group movements, and promoted high levels of site attachment to a specific home range area.
3. Encounter rate models showed that in the low-density subpopulation (Kanyawara), intergroup encounters occurred no more frequently than expected if groups were moving randomly and independently of each other. This was in contrast to previous analyses which suggested that Grey-Cheeked Mangabeys employed a social spacing mechanism (mediated by male loud calls) in order to reduce the frequency of encounter to below chance levels.

The vast majority of animals are poikilotherms, and thus face the problem that the temperature of their nervous systems rather smoothly follows the temperature changes imposed by their environment. Since basic properties of nerve cells, e.g., the time constants of ion channels, strongly depend on temperature, a temperature shift likely affects the processing of the temporal structure of sensory stimuli. This can be critical in acoustic communication systems in which time patterns of signals are decisive for recognition by the receiver. We investigated the temperature dependence of the responses of locust auditory receptors and interneurons by varying the temperature of the experimental animals during intracellular recordings. The resolution of fast amplitude modulations of acoustic signals was determined in a gap detection paradigm. In auditory receptors and local (second order) interneurons, temporal resolution was improved at higher temperatures. This gain could be attributed to a higher precision of spike timing. In a third-order neuron, a rise in temperature affected the interactions of inhibition and excitation in a complex manner, also resulting in a better resolution of gaps in the millisecond range. 相似文献

The kinetic behaviour of the ATPase activity of beef heart F1 depends largely on the exposure of the enzyme to some anionic ligands such as sulphate and/or EDTA. F1 prepared in the presence of such anions exhibited a triphasic kinetic pattern whereas F1 from which those anions were removed by dialysis exhibited only two Km values for ATP. Conversely to what has been previously reported, bicarbonate did not linearize F1-ATPase kinetics. The efficacies and dissociation constants of proposed mu and kappa receptor agonists (morphine and ethylketocyclazocine, respectively) were compared using the method of partial irreversible blockade (with buprenorphine) and Stephenson's theory of drug action. While there was good agreement between the dissociation constant (KA) of morphine in analgesia (3.3 x 10(-5) M) and in inhibition of gastrointestinal transit (1.1 x 10(-5) M), the KA of ethylketocyclazocine differed by an order of magnitude in these endpoints (3.2 x 10(-6) M and 6.7 x 10(-5) M, respectively). The efficacies of morphine were found to be similar for the two effects studied (4.23 and 5.26), while those for ethylketocyclazocine differed markedly (2.06 and 10.39). The fraction of receptors remaining unblocked after buprenorphine was consistent for the test but not for the agonist, indicating a different distribution of receptors for the two endpoints. Our results strongly suggest that morphine induces analgesia, and slows transit in the small intestine, through the same type of receptor. The same conclusion cannot be drawn for ethylketocyclazocine. 相似文献

In this work the human plasma fibronectin was purified by affinity chromatography using a tandem column system. The first affinity column was filled with gelatin-Trisacryl whereas the second one contained heparin-Trisacryl. This double affinity chromatography demonstrated its high efficiency in term of purity and yield. Several analytical methods (electrophoresis, immunoelectrophoresis, F.P.L.C. and adhesion assay on cultured eucaryotic cells) evidenced in fact the high purity of the preparation as well as its biological behaviour in term of cell adhesion and spreading. The performances of the sorbents used facilitate the scaling up when large quantities of FNP are needed. 相似文献
