Baker's Law predicts uniparental reproduction will facilitate colonization success in novel habitats. While evidence supports this prediction among colonizing plants and animals, few studies have investigated shifts in reproductive mode in haplo‐diplontic species in which both prolonged haploid and diploid stages separate meiosis and fertilization in time and space. Due to this separation, asexual reproduction can yield the dominance of one of the ploidy stages in colonizing populations. We tested for shifts in ploidy and reproductive mode across native and introduced populations of the red seaweed Gracilaria vermiculophylla. Native populations in the northwest Pacific Ocean were nearly always attached by holdfasts to hard substrata and, as is characteristic of the genus, haploid–diploid ratios were slightly diploid‐biased. In contrast, along North American and European coastlines, introduced populations nearly always floated atop soft‐sediment mudflats and were overwhelmingly dominated by diploid thalli without holdfasts. Introduced populations exhibited population genetic signals consistent with extensive vegetative fragmentation, while native populations did not. Thus, the ecological shift from attached to unattached thalli, ostensibly necessitated by the invasion of soft‐sediment habitats, correlated with shifts from sexual to asexual reproduction and slight to strong diploid bias. We extend Baker's Law by predicting other colonizing haplo‐diplontic species will show similar increases in asexuality that correlate with the dominance of one ploidy stage. Labile mating systems likely facilitate colonization success and subsequent range expansion, but for haplo‐diplontic species, the long‐term eco‐evolutionary impacts will depend on which ploidy stage is lost and the degree to which asexual reproduction is canalized. 相似文献

The map positions of five previously described phytochrome genes have been determined in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) The position of the yg-2 gene on chromosome 12 has been confirmed and the classical map revised. The position of the phytochrome A (phy A)-deficient
fri mutants has been refined by revising the classical map of chromosome 10. The position of the PhyA gene is indistinguishable from that of the fri locus. The putative phyB1-deficient tri mutants were mapped by classical and RFLP analysis to chromosome 1. The PhyB1 gene, as predicted, was located at the same position. Several mutants with the high pigment (hp) phenotype, which exaggerates phytochrome responses, have been reported. Allelism tests confirmed that the hp-2 mutant is not allelic to other previously described hp (proposed here to be called hp-1) mutants and a second stronger hp-2 allele (hp-2

In its native range the invasive weed, Rhodomyrtus tomentosa is host to a suite of herbivores. One, Strepsicrates sp. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), was collected in China in 2014, introduced under quarantine in Florida, USA, and tested against related species to determine its host range and suitability for biological control. In no-choice tests, neonates fed and completed development to the pupal stage on several species of Myrtaceae, including the target weed R. tomentosa, the exotics Melaleuca quinquenervia, and Eucalyptus camaldulensis, and three native species, Eugenia axillaris, Mosiera longipes and Morella cerifera (Myricaceae). Due to the broad host range exhibited in quarantine testing, this species will not be pursued as a biological control agent of R. tomentosa. 相似文献

The observed biological differences in safety and efficacy of intravenous (IV) iron formulations are attributable to physicochemical differences. In addition to differences in carbohydrate shell, polarographic signatures due to ferric iron [Fe(III)] and ferrous iron [Fe(II)] differ among IV iron formulations. Intravenous iron contains Fe(II) and releases labile iron in the circulation. Fe(II) generates toxic free radicals and reactive oxygen species and binds to bacterial siderophores and other in vivo sequestering agents. To evaluate whether differences in Fe(II) content may account for some observed biological differences between IV iron formulations, samples from multiple lots of various IV iron formulations were dissolved in 12 M concentrated HCl to dissociate and release all iron and then diluted with water to achieve 0.1 M HCl concentration. Fe(II) was then directly measured using ferrozine reagent and ultraviolet spectroscopy at 562 nm. Total iron content was measured by adding an excess of ascorbic acid to reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II), and Fe(II) was then measured by ferrozine assay. The Fe(II) concentration as a proportion of total iron content [Fe(III) + Fe(II)] in different lots of IV iron formulations was as follows: iron gluconate, 1.4 and 1.8 %; ferumoxytol, 0.26 %; ferric carboxymaltose, 1.4 %; iron dextran, 0.8 %; and iron sucrose, 10.2, 15.5, and 11.0 % (average, 12.2 %). The average Fe(II) content in iron sucrose was, therefore, ≥7.5-fold higher than in the other IV iron formulations. Further studies are needed to investigate the relationship between Fe(II) content and increased risk of oxidative stress and infections with iron sucrose. 相似文献

New "next generation" DNA sequencing technologies offer individual researchers the ability to rapidly generate large amounts of genome sequence data at dramatically reduced costs. As a result, a need has arisen for new software tools for storage, management and analysis of genome sequence data. Although bioinformatic tools are available for the analysis and management of genome sequences, limitations still remain. For example, restrictions on the submission of data and use of these tools may be imposed, thereby making them unsuitable for sequencing projects that need to remain in-house or proprietary during their initial stages. Titration of the monomeric heme octapeptide from horse heart cytochrome c, microperoxidase-8 (MP-8) from pH 1 to pH 13 in 20% (v/v) methanol-water solutions, mu = 0.1, at 25 degrees C shows three reversible concentration-independent pKs (4.43 +/- 0.09; 8.90 +/- 0.03; 10.48 +/- 0.09) which are ascribed to successive proton loss from the conjugate acid of His (and its coordination to Fe(III)), bound H2O, and from bound His to form an imidazolate complex, respectively. A-MuLV-transformed lymphoid cells from Balb/c mice had the properties of null lymphocytes. They did not secrete Ig and all but one did not have detectable cell-associated Ig; one line synthesized, but did not secrete, the mu chain of IgM. The cells expressed H-2D and H-2K, but not H-21 histocompatibility antigens or theta-antigen; they had Fc receptors. Most cell lines grew to form donor cell tumors after inoculation into (Balb/c X C57B1/6)F1 mice. The tumor cells have more H-2Dd than cells passaged in vitro. Cell lines carried in vitro progressively lost H-2Dd. A line in which 5-30% of the cells were lysable by anti-H-2Dd was cloned; all eleven clones had H-2Dd (13-69% lysable) demonstrating that H-2 modulates in vitro. A clone with little H-2Dd (10-15% lysable) was tumorigenic even after treatment with anti-H-2Dd sera; at least 50% of the tumor cells were lysed by anti-H-2Dd. Thus A-MuLV-transformed lymphocytes modulate H-2 in vivo to higher levels and in vitro to lower levels. 相似文献
