The postanal tail of the enteropneust Saccoglossus kowalevskii is a ciliary creeping organ without distinct similarities to the chordate tail. —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 92 : 150–160. The postanal tail of chordates is one of the key characters in chordate evolution and it has been suggested to be homologous to the postanal tail of harrimaniid enteropneusts. We present electron microscopic data of the ontogeny of the postanal tail in the enteropneust Saccoglossus kowalevskii. The postanal tail develops as a ventral posterior allometric outgrowth with a ventral extension of the telotroch. Transmission electron microscopy of serial sections reveals the epidermal organization of the postanal tail with the exception of short, bilaterally symmetric extensions of the paired metacoels. The epidermis cells are connected by apical junctions, rest basally on the extracellular matrix surrounding the mesoderm, and possess a basiepidermal nerve net. The ventral cells in the postanal tail are multiciliated and used for creeping. Dorsal cells are monociliated with numerous microvilli. Two types of glandular cells are present among the epidermis cells. The mesoderm cells contain myofilaments. We were unable to detect anatomical structures similar to the ones present in the postanal locomotory tail of chordates, such as notochord, neural tube, or endodermal strand. Thus, results of our anatomical study do not support homology of the postanal chordate tail and the postanal tail of harrimaniid enteropneusts.  相似文献

Using scanning harmonic radar, we make visible for the first time the complete trajectories of "goal-vector" flights in honeybees. We demonstrate that bees captured at an established feeding station, and released elsewhere, nevertheless embark on the previously learned vector flight that would have taken them directly home from the station, had they not been artificially displaced. Almost all of the bees maintained accurate compensation for lateral wind drift, and many completed the full length of the vector flight before starting to search for their hive. Our results showed that bees tend to disregard landscape cues during these vector flights, at least initially, and rely on the "optic flow" of the ground beneath them, and their sun compass, to judge both direction and distance.  相似文献

Migratory birds use stopovers to replenish their fuel reserves and they generally spend more time at stopover sites than they do in actual flight. When arriving at a new stopover site birds may need to search extensively to find a suitable feeding area and this search and settling period may affect the duration of stopover. Stopover behaviour can thus have profound effects on the migratory programme and studies on stopover behaviour are important to understand migratory strategies. We followed 51 first‐year garden warblers Sylvia borin with radio‐transmitters at an autumn stopover site on the island of Gotland in southern Sweden. Our aim was to determine the distance birds relocated from the coastal capture site when searching for an area to settle in, and also to establish the duration of stopover and put it in relation to refuelling rate by recapturing a subset of the radio‐tracked individuals. Sixteen birds made an extended stopover (> 2 d), relocated inland from the capture site and settled on average 5.6 km from the capture site, with the longest recorded relocation being fourteen kilometres. Birds that relocated nocturnally settled in areas further away than birds that relocated diurnally. Thirteen birds that continued migration after a short stop carried larger fuel stores than birds that stopped over longer and they remained close to the capture site until departure. Three birds were re‐trapped and showed high fuelling rates, between 0.3 and 1.1 g d–1. They left the stopover site with fuel loads between 40–56 percent of lean body mass, which possibly would have allowed them to reach the Mediterranean area without additional refuelling stops.  相似文献

Dorsal root ganglia were extirpated from 9-day old embryonic chickens and solubilized in phosphate buffered saline containing 0.5% Noniodet P 40 detergent. When nerve growth factor binding studies are performed on these samples, the expected curvilinear Rosenthal (Scatchard) plot is obtained. However, when the solubilized cell sample is made 1-2 mM in phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride and nerve growth factor binding is determined, a linear Rosenthal (Scatchard) plot is obtained. The equilibrium dissociation constant obtained from the slope of the line is 1.9 X 10(-9) M, identical to the equilibrium dissociation constant of the low affinity receptor. A similar phenomenon is observed when rat pheochromocytoma cells are solubilized in the non-ionic detergent and nerve growth factor binding is determined. No high affinity binding can be detected for either cell type when detergent solubilized cells are incubated with phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride.  相似文献

In this paper we evaluate the current state of research on the biology and biotechnology of marine actinobacteria. The topics covered include the abundance, diversity, novelty and biogeographic distribution of marine actinobacteria, ecosystem function, bioprospecting, and a new approach to the exploration of actinobacterial taxonomic space. An agenda for future marine actinobacterial research is suggested based upon consideration of the above issues.  相似文献

Two DNA sequences that appear to be homologous to large-subunit mitochondrial ribosomal RNA genes have been identified in the stone crabs Menippe mercenaria and M. adina. Amplification from whole genomic DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with oligonucleotide primers based on conserved portions of large-subunit mitochondrial rRNA genes consistently amplified two products of similar length (565 and 567 bp). These products differed at 3% of their nucleotide bases, and could be distinguished by a HindIII site. Only one of these sequences (designated the A sequence) was detected by PCR in purified mitochondrial DNA. The other (designated the B sequence) hybridized to total genomic DNA at a level consistent with a nuclear genome location. It is unlikely that the type B product would have been recognized as a nuclear copy by examination of its sequence alone. This is the first report of a mitochondrial gene sequence translocated into the nuclear genome of a crustacean.   相似文献

This contribution deals with the ultrastructure of the pancreatic nervous system of the dog 14 days and 5 months after bilateral truncal vagotomy. No major ultramorphological changes in the axons or their organelles (vesicles, mitochondria, microtubuli) were observed, and there appeared to be no reduction in the numbers of sympathic and cholinergic axis cylinders (material fixed in glutaraldehyde and potassium permanganate) or neurocellular contacts.  相似文献

Abstract: The 7S nerve growth factor complex was cross-linked with dimethylsuberimidate in a pH jump reaction and the cross-linked product of highest molecular weight was separated from non-cross-linked subunits by gel filtration at acid pH. The amount of the cross-linked 7S nerve growth factor generated was reduced by exposure of the complex to pH 9.5, where it dissociates. The cross-linked 7S nerve growth factor migrated as a single species on electrophoresis under denaturing and reducing conditions and had a molecular weight, 132,000, identical to that of 7S nerve growth factor. All three subunits of the complex were released on deamidination. The biological activity of the cross-linked 7S nerve growth factor complex was less than 0.3% that of native βNGF, suggesting that the biological activity of the latter is completely inhibited by interactions with other subunits in the complex.  相似文献
