Habitat fragmentation reduces frugivorous bird abundance. Such a reduction may lead to a reduction in seed dispersal, thereby
compromising seedling recruitment rate with far reaching consequences for plant population persistence. We assessed frugivory,
seed germination, and seedling recruitment rates in a fragmented forest of central Chile by comparing a continuous forest
with four forest fragments surrounded by pine plantations. Frugivory was 2.4 times higher in continuous forest than in forest
fragments. Seeds eaten by birds germinated 1.7 and 3.7 times higher than non-eaten seeds from continuous forest and fragments
respectively. Non-eaten seeds from continuous forest germinated 2.2 times higher than those from forest fragments, suggesting
inbreeding depression. However, seedling recruitment rates at forest fragments were far higher than in continuous forest where
no seedling recruited in the five years analysed. Therefore, despite forest fragmentation negatively affected frugivory, it
did not translate into a decreased fitness of plants, thus highlighting the importance of considering the overall processes
leading the reproductive success of plants following anthropogenic disturbances. 相似文献

Prevention of epibiosis is of vital importance for most aquatic organisms, which can have consequences for their ability to invade new areas. Surface microtopography of the shell periostracum has been shown to have antifouling properties for mytilid mussels, and the topography shows regional differences. This article examines whether an optimal shell design exists and evaluates the degree to which shell microstructure is matched with the properties of the local fouling community. Biomimics of four mytilid species from different regional provenances were exposed at eight different sites in both northern and southern hemispheres. Tendencies of the microtopography to both inhibit and facilitate fouling were detected after 3 and 6 weeks of immersion. However, on a global scale, all microtopographies failed to prevent fouling in a consistent manner when exposed to various fouling communities and when decoupled from other shell properties. It is therefore suggested that the recently discovered chemical anti-microfouling properties of the periostracum complement the anti-macrofouling defence offered by shell microtopography. 相似文献

The release of stored Ca2+ from intracellular pools triggers a variety of important neuronal processes. Physiological and pharmacological evidence has indicated the presence of caffeine-sensitive intracellular pools that are distinct from the well-characterized inositol 1,4,5,-trisphosphate (IP3)-gated pools. Here we report that the brain ryanodine receptor functions as a caffeine- and ryanodine-sensitive Ca2+ release channel that is distinct from the brain IP3 receptor. The brain ryanodine receptor has been purified 6700-fold with no change in [3H]ryanodine binding affinity and shown to be a homotetramer composed of an approximately 500 kd protein subunit, which is identified by anti-peptide antibodies against the skeletal and cardiac muscle ryanodine receptors. Our results demonstrate that the brain ryanodine receptor functions as a caffeine-sensitive Ca2+ release channel and thus is the likely gating mechanism for intracellular caffeine-sensitive Ca2+ pools in neurons. 相似文献

The localization of sesquiterpene lactones in glandular trichomes of numerous Asteraceae makes it possible to use a microtechnique to investigate their occurrence. General aspects of the utility and value of the method in comparison with standard procedures are discussed with special focus on the advantage of a quick, inexpensive and reproducible analytical technique in systematic and biochemical studies. Using analytical HPLC, it was possible to establish the sesquiterpene lactone profiles of all 64 known taxa of the genus Helianthus. Intraspecific variation of sesquiterpene lactones was found to be low in comparison to morphological characters. Hybrids were shown to possess the additive sesquiterpene lactone patterns of their parents. This suggests that the chemistry of these compounds could be a useful tool in taxonomy. 相似文献

The most studied digenean of marine organisms in Chile is by far Proctoeces humboldti, a parasite of the intestine of the clingfish Sicyases sanguineus and gonad of the keyhole limpet Fissurella spp. (progenetic metacercariae). The mussel Perumytilus purpuratus has been suggested as the first intermediate host for this digenean. In a study examining the parasites of S. sanguineus from central Chile, we found specimens of Proctoeces showing significant morphological differences with P. humboldti. To assist in the resolution of the taxonomic identification of these specimens, as well sporocysts obtained from the mussel P. purpuratus from central and northern Chile, phylogenetic studies using DNA sequences from the SSU rRNA, as well the LSU rRNA and Cox 1 gene were performed. Results showed that the clingfish S. sanguineus is a host for two species of Proctoeces (P. humboldti and P. syciases n. sp.) along the northern and central Chilean coast, without geographic separation; the mussel P. purpuratus is the first intermediate host for P. syciases n. sp. but not for P. humboldti in central and northern Chile. Fissurellids (Archaeogastropoda) along the Chilean coast harbor only progenetic stages of P. humboldti, but there is no evidence of progenesis for P. syciases. The reinstatement of Proctoeces humboldti is strongly suggested. 相似文献
