Summary The replication model for sister chromatid exchange (SCE), when introduced in 1980 by Painter, was claimed to be consistent with the one hit property of SCE. However, the argument offered in favour of the one hit property was based on a defective dose-response function, as shown in this paper, since dose as the independent parameter of any dose-response function was not included in the considerations. This missing part of the model's dose-response function is added and, by using Bessel functions, a formula for the complete dose-response function is presented. A re-examination of the newly derived function shows that, in the model, linearity holds only under certain restricted circumstances.  相似文献

The obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is a disorder of sleep and breathing that is being recognized with increasing frequency. The pathophysiologic consequences range from mild sleepiness to life-threatening cardiovascular and respiratory decompensation. The primary forms of treatment are directed at modifying the upper airway with either an operation or continuous positive airway pressure. Aside from tracheostomy, which is virtually always successful, other forms of treatment have met with varying results. Ancillary therapy, including oxygen, weight loss and drugs, is often helpful but seldom curative. Follow-up sleep studies are necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Selecting therapy for a patient with obstructive sleep apnea requires a comprehensive evaluation including polysomnography, special examinations of the upper airway and assessing the cardiopulmonary status. Therapy is based on the severity of disease and must be tailored to each patient.  相似文献

Summary Periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) cells cultured in 1-B 5 medium display the ultrastructure of parenchyma cells. The parenchyma character remained unchanged when cells were exposed to any one of three different conditions effecting alkaloid accumulation. Transfer of cells to alkaloid production medium for 2 weeks (condition 1) accorded two special features,i.e., unusually big lipid droplets in the cytoplasm and, upon fixation, one or several electron-dense droplets of spongy precipitate in vacuoles. Among hormone-autotrophic cultures (condition 2) some cells showed a fine electron-dense vacuolar precipitate. Addition ofPhythium homogenate (fungal elicitor) to cells cultured in 1-B 5-medium for 10 days (condition 3), cells showed a frequent appearance of singular big lipid droplets in the cytoplasm, whereas vacuoles remained devoid of precipitate. The appearance of big lipid droplets and of vacuolar precipitate is interpreted as progressing cytodifferentiation, but is coincidental with alkaloid accumulation.NRCC no. 24524.  相似文献

Shells of Bosminidae and Chydoridae are quantitatively preserved in lake sediments. The chronological deposition of these remains provides the means for longterm observation of these Cladocera, both in terms of species and communities. Chydorid analysis, as based on subfossil assemblages, is an analysis of community and provides direct observation of community dynamics over extended periods of time. It has proved to be a valuable method to obtain information on the influence of environmental factors and time on community characteristics. Morphological variation inBosmina (Eubosmina) has been followed for some thousand years. This is of special interest for the evaluation of taxonomic rank (species, forms) if closely related taxa have co-existed. Bosmina successions, as well as shifts in the chydorid fauna, are related to environmental change. Thus, cladoceran analysis of lake sediments provides information on the developmental history of lakes and allows observation of the effects of longterm environmental changes, such as climatic changes and eutrophication.  相似文献

Recent studies have improved the infrageneric classification ofRhododendron, including my own investigations on flavonoids and anthocyanins as chemosystematic markers. From a synoptical comparison of morphological, anatomical and phytochemical characters a new system for the genus is proposed. Phylogenetic character progressions and relationships among subgenera, sections and subsections are discussed and illustrated. Biogenic sulfuric acid corrosion of concrete surfaces caused by thiobacilli was reproduced in simulation experiments. At 9 months after inoculation with thiobacilli, concrete blocks were severely corroded. The sulfur compounds hydrogen sulfide, thiosulfate, and methylmercaptan were tested for their corrosive action. With hydrogen sulfide, severe corrosion was noted. The flora was dominated by Thiobacillus thiooxidans. Thiosulfate led to medium corrosion and a dominance of Thiobacillus neapolitanus and Thiobacillus intermedius. Methylmercaptan resulted in negligible corrosion. A flora of heterotrophs and fungi grew on the blocks. This result implies that methylmercaptan cannot be degraded by thiobacilli.  相似文献

A quantitative immunoblot assay was developed by using affinity-purified monospecific antibodies to quantitate levels of guanine nucleotide binding regulatory protein (G-protein) subunits in atria and ventricles during embryonic chicken cardiac development. The muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) number was measured with [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate. On day 10 of embryonic development (day 10E) there was no difference between the atrial and ventricular membrane concentrations of beta-subunit, G0 alpha subunit, or mAChR. The level of Gi alpha was found to be 44% greater in atria than in ventricles on day 10E. The atrial membrane concentration of beta-subunit increased 80% between day 13E and 15E, G0 alpha increased 46% between day 10E and 15E, mAChR increased 61% between day 10E and 12E, and Gi alpha decreased 34% between day 10E and 13E. The atrial levels of beta-subunit, G0 alpha, Gi alpha, and mAChR did not change further through day 20E. The ventricular membrane concentration of these proteins did not change between day 10E and 20E, except for that of G0 alpha, which increased 47% between day 15E and 20E. The atrial specific increase in beta-subunit correlated with a loss of GTP inhibition of basal adenylate cyclase activity. The difference in Gi alpha levels between atria and ventricles on day 10E correlated with a difference in carbachol sensitivity of atrial and ventricular basal adenylate cyclase activity. Thus, the levels of several components of the cholinergic neuroeffector pathway are regulated in a tissue-specific manner at a time that coincides with the onset of functional parasympathetic innervation of the embryonic chicken heart.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Adipocytes of hypothyroid rats display an increased responsiveness to agents which function by inhibiting the production of cyclic AMP. Anti-peptide antisera which selectively recognise the alpha subunit of the inhibitory guanine nucleotide binding protein (Gi) detected a 40 kDa polypeptide in adipocyte plasma membranes of both euthyroid and hypothyroid rats. Amounts of the alpha subunit of Gi were elevated some 2-fold in the hypothyroid preparations in comparison with the euthyroid controls, when equal amounts of membrane protein of the two treatments were examined. As cells from the hypothyroid animals contained 2.7 times as much membrane protein as those from the control animals, the amounts of alpha subunit of Gi are elevated some 5.6-fold per cell in adipocytes of the hypothyroid animals compared with the euthyroid controls. Amounts of the 36 kDa beta subunit of G-proteins were also elevated in plasma membranes of adipocytes of hypothyroid animals, in this case by some 50% when compared on a protein basis. These results provide direct evidence for alterations in the amounts of the subunits of Gi caused by the hypothyroid state.  相似文献

The LEW.1LM1 inbred rat strain, which has been derived from a (LEW×LEW.1W) F2 hybrid, carries a major histocompatibility (RT1) haplotype which is distinct from that of the LEW strain (RT1 1) in that certainRT1.C region-determined class I antigens are not expressed. Here we show that this phenotypic defect is due to genomic deletion of about 100 kb of theRT1.C region. Certain deleted DNA fragments have been cloned from the wild-type DNA into the EMBL4 vector. Five clones have been characterized and are shown to possess different restriction maps and to each carry a single stretch of class I cross-hybridizing sequences. Probes derived from the non-class I coding part of two clones detect fragments which are present in the wild-type but absent from thelm1 mutant. The type of deletion described here in the rat is discussed in the context ofH-2D/Q deletions in the mouse.  相似文献
