ABSTRACT Brood parasites often must overcome host defenses that may include behaviors that serve other functions, such as deterrence of predators and nest attendance during laying and incubation. Host use by brood parasites may also be influenced by competitors in areas where more than one parasitic species occurs. We identified the degree to which behavior of potential hosts and potential competitors affected laying by Brown‐headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) and Bronzed Cowbirds (M. aeneus) at a site in south Texas where they co‐occur. We watched potential host nests during the presunrise period to record cowbird laying and document nest visitation, laying, cowbird‐host encounters, and nest attentiveness by hosts. Hosts were frequently at their nests when cowbirds laid eggs (83% of 121 watches among nests of five host species) and cowbirds regularly encountered hosts (43–74% and 40–77% of watches per species of host for Brown‐headed and Bronzed cowbirds, respectively). Host nest defense infrequently interfered with cowbird laying and cowbirds rarely interacted with one another during laying. Overall, 12% of the 42 cowbird laying attempts that elicited host nest defense failed, resulting in cowbird eggs either laid atop hosts as they sat in nests or laid outside the nest cup. We clearly documented that relatively small hosts can thwart parasitism by cowbirds. Thus, the potential for successful defense of nests should be considered when assessing the evolution of behaviors to deter the removal of host eggs by cowbirds and mechanisms leading to nest abandonment. Regarding the latter, the presence of a cowbird at a nest would be a poor indicator for parasitism as some laying attempts were thwarted and unparasitized broods were reared at those nests. Despite the potential for nest defense to affect host use by cowbirds, we did not detect an effect of nest defense. Because most host defense was ineffective, we examined hypotheses for the timing of cowbird laying and host nest attendance. Our analysis of time of day of laying by Brown‐headed Cowbirds at our site and data compiled from the literature suggests that laying time is best predicted by the time of civil twilight (first light) rather than sunrise.  相似文献

We have compared the structure-function relationship of the tridecapeptide alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) on the melanophores of the lizard Anolis carolinensis and the frog Rana pipiens by determining the melanosome-dispersing potency of 15 shorter peptide sequences and 8 substituted alpha-MSH analogues. Major differences were found between the lizard and the frog in their response to alpha-MSH peptide fragments and analogues. In Anolis, the sequence Ser-Tyr-Ser- is not as important for the pigmentary response as in Rana since alpha-MSH-(4-13) was nearly as potent (89%) as alpha-MSH-(1-13) (100%), whereas in Rana alpha-MSH-(4-13) potency was reduced to 7.5%. In addition, loss of potency due to removal of residues Pro and Val was more marked in Rana (alpha-MSH-(1-11) = 0.1%) than in Anolis (alpha-MSH-(1-11) = 1%), suggesting that this C-terminal sequence is necessary for pigmentary activity in the frog melanophore. These results together with those of other peptide fragments and analogues have led us to define the minimal pigmentary sequence of alpha-MSH as alpha-MSH-(4-12) in Anolis in contrast to alpha-MSH-(1-13) in Rana. This suggests that Anolis and Rana alpha-MSH receptors recognise different message amino acids of the alpha-MSH peptide sequence even though the final response (melanosome dispersion) is the same.  相似文献

Summary Pea albumin 2 (PA2:Mr26000) is a major component of the albumin fraction derived from aqueous salt extracts of pea seed. Sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and chromatography on DEAE-Sephacel resolve PA2 into two closely related components (PA2a and PA2b). A cDNA clone coding for one of these components has been sequenced and the deduced amino acid sequence compared with partial, chemically-determined sequences for cyanogen bromide peptides from both PA2 components. Complete amino acid sequences were obtained for the C-terminal peptides. The PA2 molecule of 230 amino acids contains four imperfect repeat sequences each of approximately 57 amino acids in length.The combined sequence data, together with a comparison of PA2-related polypeptides produced in vitro and in vivo, indicate that PA2 is synthesized without a signal sequence and does not undergo significant post-translational modification. Although both forms of PA2 contain Asn-X-Thr consensus sequences, neither form is glycosylated. Accumulation of PA2 contributes approximately 11% of the sulfur-amino acids in pea seeds (cysteine plus methionine equals 2.6 residues percent). Suppression of levels of PA2 polypeptides and their mRNAs in developing seeds of sulfur-deficient plants is less marked than that for legumin, in spite of the lower content of sulfur-amino acids in legumin.  相似文献

We report here on an experimental system that utilizes ion-selective microelectrodes to measure the electrochemical potential gradients for H+ and K+ ions within the unstirred layer near the root surface of both intact 4-day-old corn seedlings and corn root segments. Analysis of the steady state H+ and K+ electrochemical potential gradients provided a simultaneous measure of the fluxes crossing a localized region of the root surface. Net K+ influx values obtained by this method were compared with unidirectional K+ (86Rb+) influx kinetic data; at any particular K+ concentration, similar values were obtained by either technique. The ionspecific microelectrode system was then used to investigate the association between net H+ efflux and net K+ influx. Although the computed H+:K+ stoichiometry is dependent upon the choice of diffusion coefficients, the values obtained were extremely variable, and net K+ influx rarely appeared to be charge-balanced by H+ efflux. In contrast to earlier studies, we found the cortical membrane potential to be highly K+ sensitive within the micromolar K+ concentration range. Simultaneous measurements of membrane potential and K+ influx, as a function of K+ concentration, revealed similar Km values for the depolarization of the potential (Km 6-9 micromolar K+) and net K+ influx (Km 4-7 micromolar K+). These data suggest that K+ may enter corn roots via a K+-H+ cotransport system rather than a K+/H+ antiporter.  相似文献

To understand better the molecular and cellular events associated with status epilepticus, a multifaceted analysis has begun on hippocampal tissues therapeutically removed from patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. In this first study, quantitative changes in major ganglioside species are reported, as well as the immunocytochemical localization on the ganglioside GD3 in epileptic human hippocampus. Although significant variations were found between patients, the pattern of change was consistent when compared to normal values obtained from an autopsied specimen and the literature. Total ganglioside content was reduced in epileptic hippocampi, which was attributable, in part, to pyramidal cell loss found in CA1 and CA3. In each case, the percentage of ganglioside GD3 was increased significantly, while ganglioside GD1a decreased. The former change is probably associated with reactive astrocytosis and the latter with loss of neuronal dendrites. Immunocytochemical localization revealed GD3 in the stratum radiatum and the subgranular layer of the dentate gyrus. In these areas, GD3 was present in punctate structures and astrocytes. These findings indicate that GD3 increases in selected areas of the sclerotic hippocampus and is presumably related to localized accumulation of reactive glial cells. Since gangliosides have a high affinity for calcium and localized increase in extracellular calcium could disrupt normal neuronal function, the localized increase in GD3 may not only denote reactive glial cells but may contribute directly to the altered, hyperexcitable condition of epilepsy.  相似文献

The effects of glucose on insulin biosynthesis were studied by measuring the incorporation of radiolabelled amino acids into proinsulin/insulin in isolated rat islets. The islets were pulse labelled for 15 min with [3H]leucine (present in rat insulin I and II) or [35S]methionine (unique to rat insulin II) and then incubated for a 165 min post-label (chase) period during which the majority of labelled proinsulin was converted to insulin but under conditions whereby greater than 95% of radiolabelled proinsulin or insulin was retained in the islets. The newly synthesized, labelled, insulin was analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography. Rat I and II insulin biosynthesis was stimulated by 16.7 mM glucose to the same extent.  相似文献

In highly eutrophic ponds, buoyancy of the gas-vacuolate blue-green alga Anabaenopsis Elenkinii (Miller) was regulated by complex interactions between chemical and physical parameters, as well as by biological interactions between various trophic levels. Algal buoyancy and surface bloom formation were enhanced markedly by decreased light intensity, and to a lesser extent by decreased CO2 availability and increased availability of inorganic nitrogen. In the absence of dense populations of large-bodied Cladocera, early season blooms of diatoms and green algae reduced light availability in the ponds thus creating conditions favorable for increased buoyancy and bloom formation by A. Elenkinii. The appearance of blue-green algal blooms could be prevented by a reduced density of planktivorous fish, which allowed development of dense cladoceran populations. The cladocerans limited the growth of precursory blooms of diatoms and green algae, and given the resulting clear-water conditions, buoyancy of A. Elenkinii was reduced, and blue-green algal blooms never appeared.  相似文献

The availability of light, CO2 and NH4-N interacted to controlbuoyancy and growth of the gas vacuolate blue-green alga, Anabaenaflos-aquae. At high light intensities algal growth rates werehigh; however, the alga was non-buoyant regardless of the availabilityof CO2 or NH4-N. The mechanism for buoyancy loss involved increasedcell turgor pressures at higher light intensities which resultedin collapse of gas vacuoles. At lower light intensities algalgrowth rates and cell turgor pressures were reduced and buoyancywas controlled by the availability of CO2 and inorganic nitrogen.Carbon dioxide limitation increased buoyancy, while reducedinorganic nitrogen availability reduced buoyancy. Mechanismsfor buoyancy regulation at low light intensities involved changesin cellular C/N ratios which appeared to affect the rate ofsynthesis and accumulation of protein-rich gas vacuoles. Algalspecific growth rates were combined with buoyancy data to forma single index (µbloom) to the rate of surface bloom formationof A.flos-aquae as a function of the availability of light,CO2 and NH4-N. The bloom formation index was enhanced with decreasedavailability of light and CO2, and increased availability ofNH4-N.  相似文献
