We analysed the geographical origins and divergence times of the West Indian hummingbirds, using a large clock‐dated phylogeny that included 14 of the 15 West Indian species and statistical biogeographical reconstruction. We also compiled a list of 101 West Indian plant species with hummingbird‐adapted flowers (90 of them endemic) and dated the most species‐rich genera or tribes, with together 41 hummingbird‐dependent species, namely Cestrum (seven spp.), Charianthus (six spp.), Gesnerieae (75 species, c. 14 of them hummingbird‐pollinated), Passiflora (ten species, one return to bat‐pollination) and Poitea (five spp.), to relate their ages to those of the bird species. Results imply that hummingbirds colonized the West Indies at least five times, from 6.6 Mya onwards, coming from South and Central America, and that there are five pairs of sister species that originated within the region. The oldest of the dated plant groups diversified 9.1, 8.5, and 5.4 Mya, simultaneous with or slightly before the extant West Indian bird radiations. The aim of this work was to produce and characterize cetyl palmitate-based solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) containing insulin, and to evaluate the potential of these colloidal carriers for oral administration. SLN were prepared by a modified solvent emulsification-evaporation method based on a w/o/w double emulsion. The particle size, zeta potential and association efficiency of unloaded and insulin-loaded SLN were determined and were found to be around 350 nm, negatively charged and the insulin association efficiency was over 43%. After oral administration of insulin-loaded SLN to diabetic rats, a considerable hypoglycemic effect was observed during 24 hours. These results demonstrated that SLN promote the oral absorption of insulin.  相似文献

Even though speciation involving multiple interacting partners, such as plants and their pollinators, has attracted much research, most studies focus on isolated phases of the process. This currently precludes an integrated understanding of the mechanisms leading to cospeciation. Here, we examine population genetic structure across six species‐pairs of figs and their pollinating wasps along an elevational gradient in New Guinea. Specifically, we test three hypotheses on the genetic structure within the examined species‐pairs and find that the hypothesized genetic structures represent different phases of a single continuum, from incipient cospeciation to the full formation of new species. Our results also illuminate the mechanisms governing cospeciation, namely that fig wasps tend to accumulate population genetic differences faster than their figs, which initially decouples the speciation dynamics between the two interacting partners and breaks down their one‐to‐one matching. This intermediate phase is followed by genetic divergence of both partners, which may eventually restore the one‐to‐one matching among the fully formed species. Together, these findings integrate current knowledge on the mechanisms operating during different phases of the cospeciation process. They also reveal that the increasingly reported breakdowns in one‐to‐one matching may be an inherent part of the cospeciation process. Mechanistic understanding of this process is needed to explain how the extraordinary diversity of species, especially in the tropics, has emerged. Knowing which breakdowns in species interactions are a natural phase of cospeciation and which may endanger further generation of diversity seems critical in a constantly changing world.  相似文献

Background

Leprosy is an endemic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae that predominantly attacks the skin and peripheral nerves, leading to progressive impairment of motor, sensory and autonomic function. Little is known about how this peripheral neuropathy affects corticospinal excitability of handgrip muscles. Our purpose was to explore the motor cortex organization after progressive peripheral nerve injury and upper-limb dysfunction induced by leprosy using noninvasive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

Methods

In a cross-sectional study design, we mapped bilaterally in the primary motor cortex (M1) the representations of the hand flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), as well as of the intrinsic hand muscles abductor pollicis brevis (APB), first dorsal interosseous (FDI) and abductor digiti minimi (ADM). All participants underwent clinical assessment, handgrip dynamometry and motor and sensory nerve conduction exams 30 days before mapping. Wilcoxon signed rank and Mann-Whitney tests were performed with an alpha-value of p<0.05.

Findings

Dynamometry performance of the patients’ most affected hand (MAH), was worse than that of the less affected hand (LAH) and of healthy controls participants (p = 0.031), confirming handgrip impairment. Motor threshold (MT) of the FDS muscle was higher in both hemispheres in patients as compared to controls, and lower in the hemisphere contralateral to the MAH when compared to that of the LAH. Moreover, motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitudes collected in the FDS of the MAH were higher in comparison to those of controls. Strikingly, MEPs in the intrinsic hand muscle FDI had lower amplitudes in the hemisphere contralateral to MAH as compared to those of the LAH and the control group. Taken together, these results are suggestive of a more robust representation of an extrinsic hand flexor and impaired intrinsic hand muscle function in the hemisphere contralateral to the MAH due to leprosy.

Conclusion

Decreased sensory-motor function induced by leprosy affects handgrip muscle representation in M1.  相似文献

Summary Sorghum (Sorghum bicolar (L) Moench cv EA-955 Serena) seeds, subjected or not to hydration-dehydration treatment were planted in distilled water, NaCl, and Na2SO4. When seeds were not hydrated-dehydrated the salts inhibited both seed germination and seedling vigour, and caused an increase in the per cent of abnormal seedlings. The salts neither inhibited seed germination nor increased the per cent of abnormal seedlings if the seeds were treated by hydration-dehydration. However, this treatment was not effective in overcoming the inhibitory effect of either NaCl or Na2SO4 on seedling vigour. Application of these principles in growing plants under saline environment is discussed.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce a misclassification model for the meiosis I non‐disjunction fraction in numerical chromosomal anomalies named trisomies. We obtain posteriors, and their moments, for the probability that a non‐disjunction occurs in the first division of meiosis and for the misclassification errors. We also extend previous works by providing the exact posterior, and its moments, for the probability that a non‐disjunction occurs in the first division of meiosis assuming the model proposed in the literature which does not consider that data are subject to misclassification. We perform Monte Carlo studies in order to compare Bayes estimates obtained by using both models. An application to Down Syndrome data is also presented. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In the present investigation, a simple technique was employed to obtain cross-sections of unloaded and nifedipine loaded chitosan microspheres. Microspheres, adhering to a polymerized resin block, were cut with an ultramicrotome and viewed with a scanning electron microscope. Unloaded microspheres exhibited a uniform dense matrix structure while crystals of nifedipine were clearly visible in the drug-loaded microspheres. At 2% drug loading, however, no crystals could be seen in the microspheres indicating that either the drug was molecularly dispersed or dissolved in the matrix at this concentration. This was confirmed by powder X-ray diffractometry studies where no peak due to crystalline nifedipine was observed. At high Span 85 concentration (1.5% w/v), the external surface of the microspheres collapsed, but the internal structure remained dense. When the drug was dispersed in the chitosan solution with stirring during preparation, the entrapment was good and the shape of the crystals was changed. The internal structure of the microspheres following dissolution exhibited the presence of pores.  相似文献
