Recent observations in The Gambia have shown that the status of many species has changed in the last forty or fifty years and have provided data on the local breeding seasons for a number of birds. Several species have been found for the first time in this part of West Africa. The various birds concerned are given in a systematic list, together with notes on all the Palaearctic migrants so far recorded from The Gambia. Organized research is recommended on several lines: on the sequence of food sources, especially through the long and severe dry season, when Palaearctic birds are added to resident and when some African species breed. The bird ecology of the mangroves remains to be worked out, and also the relative importance to birds of cleared ground and untouched "bush" at all seasons.  相似文献

Rat bite fever is an under-reported, under-diagnosed emerging zoonosis with worldwide distribution. Besides Spirillum minus, Streptobacillus moniliformis is the major causative microorganism although it usually colonises rats without any clinical signs. A group of house rats (Rattus rattus) kept in a zoo exhibition for educational purposes suffered from neurological signs including disorientation, torticollis, stall walking, ataxia and death. Gross pathological and histo-pathological examinations of the investigated rats revealed high-grade otitis interna et media, from which Streptobacillus notomytis was isolated in pure culture or as the predominant microorganism. This case series underlines a previously expressed hypothesis that R. rattus might be naturally colonised with S. notomytis, whereas the traditional rat bite fever organism, S. moniliformis, might be restricted to the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus). However, the general paucity of Streptobacillus isolates, especially from their respective animal hosts, precludes definitive proof of these host tropisms. This is the first report of S. notomytis detection outside Asia and Australia and the first evidence for its role as a facultative pathogen in house rats.  相似文献

Eukaryotic genomes are organized into chromatin, divided into structurally and functionally distinct euchromatin and heterochromatin compartments. The high level of compaction and the abundance of repeated sequences in heterochromatin pose multiple challenges for the maintenance of genome stability. Cells have evolved sophisticated and highly controlled mechanisms to overcome these constraints. Here, we summarize recent findings on how the heterochromatic state influences DNA damage formation, signaling, and repair. By focusing on distinct heterochromatin domains in different eukaryotic species, we highlight the heterochromatin contribution to the compartmentalization of DNA damage repair in the cell nucleus and to the repair pathway choice. We also describe the diverse chromatin alterations associated with the DNA damage response in heterochromatin domains and present our current understanding of their regulatory mechanisms. Finally, we discuss the biological significance and the evolutionary conservation of these processes.  相似文献

Introgressive hybridization between Micropterus dolomieu and Micropterus salmoides was assessed in their invaded South African range using nine microsatellite markers and two mtDNA gene regions. Although M. dolomieu and M. salmoides are distantly related, indicated by the large uncorrected pairwise distances observed between the two species, mitochondrial introgression and unidirectional admixture was detected.  相似文献

Context: Large epidemiological studies often collect non-fasting samples, although the reliability of biomarkers may be uncertain.

Objective: To explore the reliability and reproducibility of a single measurement of selected biomarkers in a sub-sample of the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort.

Methods: We estimated single- and average-measures intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) for oxidized (ox)-LDL, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α.

Results: Single-measures ICC in non-fasting samples of ox-LDL, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α were the following: 0.85, 0.71, 0.61, 0.78 and 0.66 for men, and 0.67, 0.81, 0.87, 0.69 and 0.81 for women. Biomarkers at non-fasting and fasting samples were highly correlated (all r?>?0.80).

Conclusions: The observed ICC suggest that most of the examined biomarkers (non-fasting blood) would allow meaningful analysis in epidemiological studies.  相似文献

Snags are used as habitat by several organisms, including bark- and wood-boring beetles, which contribute to snag decomposition and facilitate subsequent snag colonization by other organisms. However, snags seldom occur in young managed forests. This study examines how snag characteristics and spatial arrangement affect bark- and wood-boring beetle colonization and survival in spruce plantations subjected to commercial thinning, thinning with biomass removal and thinning with snag creation where a few clumps of trees were girdled. To this end, we documented the volume of snags, their characteristics and the number of beetle emergence holes in their basal section. Beetle colonization and survival to adulthood in snags was ~33 times greater when expressed per unit area in plantations supplemented with clumps of girdled trees than in other thinning regimes where low densities of beetle emergence holes per hectare were documented. Snag diameter at breast height, snag species and thinning treatments influenced the number of emergence holes per snag. Positive spatial autocorrelation between the abundance of emergence holes per snag was detected but no other spatial effect was noticeable. This work suggests that vertical deadwood is a limiting factor for bark- and wood-boring beetle colonization within plantations and challenges current thinking about the effect of thinning on beetle communities that was developed from window trap studies. These results underline the importance of large diameter snags for beetle conservation within managed forests and demonstrate that tree girdling during thinning entries is a viable method for creating snags to enhance beetle colonization and survival.  相似文献

Weak or nonexistent smallpox immunity in today's human population raises concerns about the possibility of natural or provoked genetic modifications leading to re-emergence of variola virus and other poxviruses. Thus, the development of new antiviral strategies aimed at poxvirus infections in humans is a high priority. The DNA repair protein uracil-DNA glycosylase (UNG) is one of the viral enzymes important for poxvirus pathogenesis. Consequently, the inhibition of UNG is a rational therapeutic strategy for infections with poxviruses. Monkeypox virus, which occurs naturally in Africa, can cause a smallpox-like disease in humans. Here, the monkeypox virus UNG (mpUNG) is characterized and compared to vaccinia virus UNG (vUNG) and human UNG (hUNG). The mpUNG protein excises uracil preferentially from single-stranded DNA. Furthermore, mpUNG prefers the U.G pair over the U.A pair and does not excise oxidized bases. Both mpUNG and vUNG viral proteins are strongly inhibited by physiological concentrations of NaCl and MgCl2. Although the two viral DNA repair enzymes have similar substrate specificities, the kcat/KM values of mpUNG are higher than those of vUNG. The mpUNG protein was strongly inhibited by 5-azauracil and to a lesser extent by 4(6)-aminouracil and 5-halogenated uracil analogues, whereas uracil had no effect. To develop antiviral drugs toward mpUNG, we also validated a repair assay using the molecular beacons containing multiple uracil residues. Potential targets and strategies for combating pathogenic orthopoxviruses, including smallpox, are discussed.  相似文献
