In their natural environment, plants interact with many different organisms. The nature of these interactions may range from positive, for example interactions with pollinators, to negative, such as interactions with pathogens and herbivores. In this special issue, the contributors provide several examples of how plants manage both positive and negative biotic interactions. This review aims to relate their findings to what we know about the complex natural environments in which plants have evolved. Molecular analyses of plant genomes and expression profiles have shown how intricately plants may regulate responses to single or multiple biotic interactions. Plant responses are fine-tuned by signalling hormone interactions. When multiple organisms interact with a single plant this may result in antagonistic or synergistic effects. The emerging fields of ecogenomics and metabolomics undoubtedly will refine our understanding of the multilayered regulation that plants use to manage relationships with their biotic environment. However, we can only understand why plants have such an intricate regulatory apparatus if we consider the ecological context of plant biotic interactions.  相似文献

Mites (Acari) are one of the most diverse groups of life on Earth; yet, their evolutionary relationships are poorly understood. Also, the resolution of broader arachnid phylogeny has been hindered by an underrepresentation of mite diversity in phylogenomic analyses. To further our understanding of Acari evolution, we design targeted ultraconserved genomic elements (UCEs) probes, intended for resolving the complex relationships between mite lineages and closely related arachnids. We then test our Acari UCE baits in‐silico by constructing a phylogeny using 13 existing Acari genomes, as well as 6 additional taxa from a variety of genomic sources. Our Acari‐specific probe kit improves the recovery of loci within mites over an existing general arachnid UCE probe set. Our initial phylogeny recovers the major mite lineages, yet finds mites to be non‐monophyletic overall, with Opiliones (harvestmen) and Ricinuleidae (hooded tickspiders) rendering Parasitiformes paraphyletic.  相似文献

Plasma vasopressin levels are significantly decreased after intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of β-endorphin (βE), but not of des-tyrosine βE (DTβE). The βE induced decrease of vasopressin levels, which occurs in normal as well as in water deprivated rats, can partially be blocked by naltrexone. γ-Endorphin (γE), α-endorphin (αE), DTγE and DTαE did not affect basal levels of vasopressin, but γE and DTγE further increased the elevated vasopressin levels in water deprivated rats. Naltrexone antagonized this increase following γE administration, but not that induced by DTγE. The results suggest that the effects of βE and its fragments on plasma vasopressin levels are mediated by multiple opiate and non-opiate receptor systems.  相似文献

We report the application of a fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-anti-FITC method to localize antigens at the ultrastructural level. In the systems studied, the anti-FITC-based detection method displays high specificity and sensitivity. These observations, combined with ease of production and with availability of FITC-protein conjugates, suggest that the FITC-anti-FITC method is a good alternative to presently used methods and is widely applicable to immunochemical and immunocytochemical procedures. The same preparation and protocol can be used for light and electron microscopic studies, thereby reducing possible artifacts introduced if different procedures are used. In the present study, two systems were used to test the method. One system used an FITC-labeled monoclonal antibody (MAb) to schistosome circulating cathodic antigen. In this system, the label was detected in the gut of adult Schistosoma mansoni by an anti-FITC MAb conjugated to 10-nm gold particles. The second system used human IgM antibodies pooled from patients infected with Schistosoma mansoni. In this system detection was accomplished using an anti-human IgM-FITC conjugate followed by the anti-FITC-Au antibody conjugate.  相似文献

Comparative genomics has proven a fruitful approach to acquire many functional and evolutionary insights into core cellular processes. Here it is argued that in order to perform accurate and interesting comparative genomics, one first and foremost has to be able to recognize, postulate, and revise different evolutionary scenarios. After all, these studies lack a simple protocol, due to different proteins having different evolutionary dynamics and demanding different approaches. The authors here discuss this challenge from a practical (what are the observations?) and conceptual (how do these indicate a specific evolutionary scenario?) viewpoint, with the aim to guide investigators who want to analyze the evolution of their protein(s) of interest. By sharing how the authors draft, test, and update such a scenario and how it directs their investigations, the authors hope to illuminate how to execute molecular evolution studies and how to interpret them.
