The phenomenon of aposematism, or the pairing of antipredator defence with conspicuous or distinctive signals, serves as an excellent example of how traits act in concert to shape fitness. Not only does this complex phenotype require the integration of multiple traits, it alters the fitness pay‐offs of yet others. The protection offered by aposematism may, for example, reduce the costs associated with foraging or sexual display. Thus, well‐protected aposematic lineages should be bolder, more active and less likely to respond to perceived threats of predation than more cryptic lineages. Comparisons of differently coloured morphs of the polytypic strawberry poison frog (Oophaga pumilio) have supported the predicted behavioural correlates of aposematism, with the exception of those regarding responsiveness to simulated predators. We tested the key prediction that aposematic coloration will be associated with reduced sensitivity to predators in two polymorphic O. pumilio populations. The novel approach of studying polymorphic populations allowed us to assess the effect of colour in the absence of potentially confounding habitat differences. We found that colour was associated with the probability that a frog would attempt escape and the distance at which it fled, but only in one population, and not in the predicted direction. An overall comparison of the two populations superficially supported our predictions, but this pattern actually arose because frogs occupying higher perches were less likely to respond, a pattern that may reflect the value of high perches and the costs associated with returning to them after attempted escape. These results highlight the complexity of the relationship between predators and prey, the challenges associated with understanding how and why traits are correlated, and the intimate ties between behaviour and morphological evolution. 相似文献

House re-invasion by native triatomines after insecticide-based control campaigns
represents a major threat for Chagas disease vector control. We conducted a
longitudinal intervention study in a rural section (Area III, 407 houses) of Pampa
del Indio, northeastern Argentina, and used wing geometric morphometry to compare
pre-spray and post-spray (re-infestant bugs) Triatoma infestans
populations. The community-wide spraying with pyrethroids reduced the prevalence of
house infestation by T. infestans from 31.9% to < 1% during a
four-year follow-up, unlike our previous studies in the neighbouring Area I. Two
groups of bug collection sites differing in wing shape variables before interventions
(including 221 adults from 11 domiciles) were used as a reference for assigning 44
post-spray adults. Wing shape variables from post-spray, high-density bug colonies
and pre-spray groups were significantly different, suggesting that re-infestant
insects had an external origin. Insects from one house differed strongly in wing
shape variables from all other specimens. A further comparison between insects from
both areas supported the existence of independent re-infestation processes within the
same district. These results point to local heterogeneities in house re-infestation
dynamics and emphasise the need to expand the geographic coverage of vector
surveillance and control operations to the affected region. 相似文献

Flies may act as potential vectors for the spread of resistant bacteria to different environments. This study was intended to evaluate the presence of Escherichia coli strains resistant to cephalosporins in flies captured in the areas surrounding five broiler farms. Phenotypic and molecular characterization of the resistant population was performed by different methods: MIC determination, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multilocus sequence typing (MLST), and phylotyping. The presence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) genes, their plasmid location, and the mobile genetic elements involved in their mobilization were studied. Additionally, the presence of 35 genes associated with virulence was evaluated. Out of 682 flies captured, 42 yielded ESBL-producing E. coli. Of these isolates, 23 contained blaCTX-M-1, 18 contained blaCTX-M-14, and 1 contained blaCTX-M-9. ESBL genes were associated mainly with the presence of the IncI1 and IncFIB replicons. Additionally, all the strains were multiresistant, and five of them also harbored qnrS. Identical PFGE profiles were found for E. coli isolates obtained from flies at different sampling times, indicating a persistence of the same clones in the farm environment over months. According to their virulence genes, 81% of the isolates were considered avian-pathogenic E. coli (APEC) and 29% were considered extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC). The entrance of flies into broiler houses constitutes a considerable risk for colonization of broilers with multidrug-resistant E. coli. ESBLs in flies reflect the contamination status of the farm environment. Additionally, this study demonstrates the potential contribution of flies to the dissemination of virulence and resistance genes into different ecological niches. 相似文献

Turnera sidoides is a complex of outcrossing, perennial, rhizomatous herbs that is widely distributed in southern South America. Five subspecies are recognized taxonomically based on morphological features and geographical distribution. In certain regions, the areas of distribution of the subspecies overlap partially. In such contact zones, the extent of reproductive barriers among subspecies is still largely unknown, but morphologically intermediate individuals have been found in the field, indicating that hybridization may actually occur between subspecies. Crossability among subspecies of T. sidoides has been shown by experimental studies with cultivated plants, but the mechanisms involved in natural populations are still unknown. To investigate the mechanisms that underlie gene flow within the T. sidoides complex, in this paper we analyze the morphological and genetic variation, as well as the crossability among taxa in a contact zone between subspecies pinnatifida and sidoides, in southeastern Uruguay. Our results constitute the first evidences of ongoing natural hybridization between subspecies of T. sidoides and suggest that, although hybridization may not have been of significance in the early phase of the species differentiation, reticulate evolution is ongoing enhancing the current morphological and genetic variability of the complex. 相似文献
