Habitat loss is known to pervade extinction thresholds in metapopulations. Such thresholds result from a loss of stability that can eventually lead to collapse. Several models have been developed to understand the nature of these transitions and how they are affected by the locality of interactions, fluctuations or external drivers. Most models consider the impact of grazing or aridity as a control parameter that can trigger sudden shifts, once critical values are reached. Others explore instead the role played by habitat loss and fragmentation. Here we consider a minimal model incorporating facilitation between the individuals of the same species along with habitat destruction, with the aim of understanding how local cooperation and habitat loss interact with each other. A mathematical model incorporating facilitation and habitat destruction is derived, along with a spatially explicit simulation model. It is found that a catastrophic shift is expected for increasing levels of habitat loss, but the bifurcation becomes continuous when dispersal is local. Under these conditions, spatial patchiness is found and the qualitative change from discontinuous to continuous results are in agreement with previous studies on ecological systems. Our results suggest that species exhibiting facilitation and displaying short-range dispersal will be markedly more capable of avoiding catastrophic tipping points. 相似文献

In a previous study we investigated the effects of aromatic fluorine substitution on the strengths of the halogen bonds in halobenzene…acetone complexes (halo?=?chloro, bromo, and iodo). In this work, we have examined the origins of these halogen bonds (excluding the iodo systems), more specifically, the relative contributions of electrostatic and dispersion forces in these interactions and how these contributions change when halogen σ-holes are modified. These studies have been carried out using density functional symmetry adapted perturbation theory (DFT-SAPT) and through analyses of intermolecular correlation energies and molecular electrostatic potentials. It is found that electrostatic and dispersion contributions to attraction in halogen bonds vary from complex to complex, but are generally quite similar in magnitude. Not surprisingly, increasing the size and positive nature of a halogen’s σ-hole dramatically enhances the strength of the electrostatic component of the halogen bonding interaction. Not so obviously, halogens with larger, more positive σ-holes tend to exhibit weaker dispersion interactions, which is attributable to the lower local polarizabilities of the larger σ-holes. Figure

There are two vectors of Chagas disease in Chile: Triatoma infestans and Mepraia spinolai. We studied the feeding behavior of these species, looking for differences which could possibly explain the low impact of the latter species on Chagas disease. Both species used thermal cues to locate their feeding source and consumed a similar volume of blood which was inversely related to the body weight before the meal and directly related to the time between meals. The average time between bites were 6.24 and 10.74 days. The average bite of M. spinolai lasted 9.68 min, significantly shorter than the 19.46 min for T. infestans. Furthermore, while T. infestans always defecated on the host, this behavior was observed in M. spinolai in only one case of 27 (3.7%). The delay between the bites and defecation was very long in M. spinolai and short in T. infestans. These differences may affect the reduced efficiency of transmission of Chagas infection by M. spinolai. 相似文献

Chronic administration of isoproterenol (IPR) results in a marked hypertrophy and in the induction of a group of putative proline-rich polypeptides in the mouse parotid glands. Some of these polypeptides (pps C-G) have been considered as molecular markers of the parotid gland enlargement. Given the secretory character of polypeptides C-G, the polypeptide composition of mouse saliva was used to monitor the IPR-induced salivary gland hypertrophy. Whole saliva was collected after an oral administration of pilocarpine (PIL). Under those conditions, PIL provoked a massive salivary secretion both in normal control mice and during the whole course of the IPR-induced gland enlargement. Striking changes in the polypeptide composition of saliva obtained from chronically IPR-stimulated animals were observed. Those changes consisted basically in the appearance and progressive increase in concentration of parotid polypeptides C-G and in the progressive diminution in concentration of a couple of normal salivary polypeptides (polypeptides A-B). The appearance of new polypeptides in saliva could be established unequivocally within the 24 h following the trophic adrenergic stimulation. On the other hand, salivary polypeptides induced in response to a single administration of IPR could be demonstrated as late as 7-9 days after the stimulation. Accordingly, detection of parotid polypeptides C-G in PIL-produced saliva obtained from IPR-stimulated mice has proved to be a highly advantageous method to evaluate salivary gland hypertrophy both at very early stages after the trophic stimulation and late after the occurrence of the trophic episode. 相似文献

The reduction potential of mavicyanin isolated from zucchini peelings, which is a blue copper protein belonging to the subclass of the phytocyanins, has been determined through direct electrochemistry as a function of temperature and pH. The enthalpy and entropy changes accompanying protein reduction were found to be very similar with those determined previously for other phytocyanins and to differ remarkably from those of azurins and plastocyanins. This finding contributes to further characterize phytocyanins as a distinct cupredoxins family also on thermodynamic grounds and improves our understanding of how the reduction potential of these metal centers in proteins is modulated by coordinative and solvation properties. The E degrees' of mavicyanin is found to be sensitive to two acid-base equilibria at the extremes of pH. One occurs below pH 4, and is related to the protonation and detachment from the Cu(I) center of a histidine ligand. The other, observed above pH 8, causes a remarkable change in the electrostatic potential and/or the field strength around the copper. 相似文献

Biotic recoveries following mass extinctions are characterized by a process in which whole ecologies are reconstructed from low-diversity systems, often characterized by opportunistic groups. The recovery process provides an unexpected window to ecosystem dynamics. In many aspects, recovery is very similar to ecological succession, but important differences are also apparently linked to the innovative patterns of niche construction observed in the fossil record. In this paper, we analyse the similarities and differences between ecological succession and evolutionary recovery to provide a preliminary ecological theory of recoveries. A simple evolutionary model with three trophic levels is presented, and its properties (closely resembling those observed in the fossil record) are compared with characteristic patterns of ecological response to disturbances in continuous models of three-level ecosystems. 相似文献

Hepatocyte gap junction proteins, connexins (Cxs) 26 and 32, are downregulated during obstructive cholestasis (OC) and lipopolysaccharide hepatocellular cholestasis (LPS-HC). We investigated rat hepatic Cxs during ethynylestradiol hepatocellular cholestasis (EE-HC) and choledochocaval fistula (CCF) and compared them with OC and LPS-HC. Levels (immunoblotting) and cellular distribution (immunofluorescence) of Cx26, -32, and -43, as well as macrophage infiltration, were studied in livers of rats under each condition. Cx26 and -32 were reduced in LPS-HC, OC, and CCF. However, in EE-HC, Cx26 did not change and Cx32 was increased. Prominent inflammation occurred in LPS-HC, OC, and CCF, which was associated with increased levels of Cx43 in LPS-HC and OC but not CCF. No inflammation nor changes in Cx43 levels occurred during EE-HC. In cultured hepatocytes, dye coupling was reduced by tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukins-1beta and -6, whereas reduction induced by LPS required coculture with Kupffer cells. Thus hepatocyte gap junctions are downregulated in forms of cholestasis associated with inflammation, and reduced intercellular communication might be induced in part by proinflammatory mediators. 相似文献
