? Paleobotanists have long used models based on leaf size and shape to reconstruct paleoclimate. However, most models incorporate a single variable or use traits that are not physiologically or functionally linked to climate, limiting their predictive power. Further, they often underestimate paleotemperature relative to other proxies. ? Here we quantify leaf-climate correlations from 92 globally distributed, climatically diverse sites, and explore potential confounding factors. Multiple linear regression models for mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP) are developed and applied to nine well-studied fossil floras. ? We find that leaves in cold climates typically have larger, more numerous teeth, and are more highly dissected. Leaf habit (deciduous vs evergreen), local water availability, and phylogenetic history all affect these relationships. Leaves in wet climates are larger and have fewer, smaller teeth. Our multivariate MAT and MAP models offer moderate improvements in precision over univariate approaches (± 4.0 vs 4.8°C for MAT) and strong improvements in accuracy. For example, our provisional MAT estimates for most North American fossil floras are considerably warmer and in better agreement with independent paleoclimate evidence. ? Our study demonstrates that the inclusion of additional leaf traits that are functionally linked to climate improves paleoclimate reconstructions. This work also illustrates the need for better understanding of the impact of phylogeny and leaf habit on leaf-climate relationships.  相似文献

Serotonin (5HT) is a biologically active amine present in mammals in the brain and the peripheral tissues. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which 5HT homeostasis is disturbed both centrally and peripherally, but the relationship between the 5HT disturbances in the two compartments is not understood. In an attempt to explore the relationship between the disturbed peripheral 5HT homeostasis and central 5HT functioning, we exposed the developing rat brain to increased 5HT concentrations, by treatment of rats with subcutaneous injections of the immediate 5HT precursor 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan (5HTP, 25 mg/kg), or the non-selective MAO inhibitor tranylcypromine (TCP, 2 mg/kg), during the period of the most intensive development of 5HT neurons - from gestational day 13 to post-natal day 21. The effects of the mentioned treatments on peripheral and central 5HT levels were then studied in adult rats. Platelet and plasma 5HT concentrations (measured by ELISA), as well as cortical and midbrain 5HT, tryptophan and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid levels (measured by HPLC) were determined in twelve 5HTP treated and eight TCP treated rats, and compared with the values measured in 10 control, saline treated rats. Treatment with 5HTP significantly raised peripheral but not central 5HT concentrations. At adult age, peripheral 5HT homeostasis was re-established, while modest decrease in 5HT concentration was observed in frontal cortex, presumably due to hyperserotonemia-induced loss of 5HT terminals during brain development. Treatment with TCP induced significant 5HT elevations in both compartments. At adult age, permanent changes in 5HT homeostasis were observed, both peripherally (as hyperserotonemia) and centrally (as altered 5HT metabolism with decreased 5HT concentrations). Further studies are planned in order to explore the nature of the different disturbances of 5HT homeostasis induced by the two compounds, and their results are expected to shed some light on the role of hyperserotonemia in autism.  相似文献

At variance with protein kinases expressed by oncogenes, CK2 is endowed with constitutive activity under normal conditions, and no CK2 gain-of-function mutants are known. Its amount, however, is abnormally high in malignant cells where it appears to be implicated in many of the cell biology phenomena associated with cancer. These observations can be reconciled assuming that tumor cells develop an overdue reliance ("non-oncogene addiction") on abnormally high CK2 level. While the potential of this latter to generate an environment favorable to neoplasia is consistent with the global antiapoptotic and prosurvival role played by CK2, it is not clear what is determining accumulation of CK2 in cells "predisposed" to become malignant. Exploiting the apoptosis sensitive (S) or resistant (R) CEM cell model, characterized by sharply different CK2 levels, we have now correlated the level and degradation rate of CK2 to those of the chaperone proteins Hsp90 and Cdc37. We show in particular that persistence of high CK2 level in R-CEM, as opposed to S-CEM, is accompanied by the presence of an immunospecific form of Cdc37 not detectable in S-CEM and refractory to staurosporine-induced degradation.  相似文献

Background:

Morbidity due to cardiovascular disease is high among First Nations people. The extent to which this may be related to the likelihood of coronary angiography is unclear. We examined the likelihood of coronary angiography after acute myocardial infarction (MI) among First Nations and non–First Nations patients.

Methods:

Our study included adults with incident acute MI between 1997 and 2008 in Alberta. We determined the likelihood of angiography among First Nations and non–First Nations patients, adjusted for important confounders, using the Alberta Provincial Project for Outcome Assessment in Coronary Heart Disease (APPROACH) database.

Results:

Of the 46 764 people with acute MI, 1043 (2.2%) were First Nations. First Nations patients were less likely to receive angiography within 1 day after acute MI (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0.73, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.62–0.87). Among First Nations and non–First Nations patients who underwent angiography (64.9%), there was no difference in the likelihood of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 0.92, 95% CI 0.83–1.02) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) (adjusted HR 1.03, 95% CI 0.85–1.25). First Nations people had worse survival if they received medical management alone (adjusted HR 1.38, 95% CI 1.07–1.77) or if they underwent PCI (adjusted HR 1.38, 95% CI 1.06–1.80), whereas survival was similar among First Nations and non–First Nations patients who received CABG.

Interpretation:

First Nations people were less likely to undergo angiography after acute MI and experienced worse long-term survival compared with non–First Nations people. Efforts to improve access to angiography for First Nations people may improve outcomes.Although cardiovascular disease has been decreasing in Canada,1 First Nations people have a disproportionate burden of the disease. First Nations people in Canada have a 2.5-fold higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease than non–First Nations people,2 with hospital admissions for cardiovascular-related events also increasing.3The prevalence of cardiovascular disease in First Nations populations is presumed to be reflective of the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors.47 However, the disproportionate increase in rates of hospital admission suggests that suboptimal management of cardiovascular disease or its risk factors may also influence patient outcomes.2,3 Racial disparities in the quality of cardiovascular care resulting in adverse outcomes have been documented, although most studies have focused on African-American, Hispanic and Asian populations.8,9 As a result, it is unclear whether suboptimal delivery of guideline-recommended treatment contributes to increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality among First Nations people.1012We undertook a population-based study involving adults with incident acute myocardial infarction (MI) to examine the receipt of guideline-recommended coronary angiography among First Nations and non–First Nations patients.1012 Among patients who underwent angiography, we sought to determine whether there were differences between First Nations and non–First Nations patients in the likelihood of revascularization and long-term survival.  相似文献

In this article, we will review and highlight some recent computational work on enantioselective adsorption and catalysis in zeolites and metal–organic frameworks. The design, development and understanding of chiral structures will help expand the utility of nanoporous materials into chiral technology. The highlighted works are examples of how molecular simulations can provide a fundamental understanding of chirality in nanoporous materials. This understanding is essential to help in the design and development of next-generation enantioselective separation devices and catalysts.  相似文献

The cerebellum is one of the most affected brain regions in the course of bilirubin-induced neurological dysfunction. We recently demonstrated that unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) reduces oligodendrocyte progenitor cell (OPC) survival and impairs oligodendrocyte (OL) differentiation and myelination in co-cultures of dorsal root ganglia neurons and OL. Here, we used organotypic cerebellar slice cultures, which replicate many aspects of the in vivo system, to dissect myelination defects by UCB in the presence of neuroimmune-related glial cells. Our results demonstrate that treatment of cerebellar slices with UCB reduces the number of myelinated fibres and myelin basic protein mRNA expression. Interestingly, UCB addition to slices increased the percentage of OPC and decreased mature OL content, whereas it decreased Olig1 and increased Olig2 mRNA expression. These UCB effects were associated with enhanced gliosis, revealed by an increased burden of both microglia and astrocytes. Additionally, UCB treatment led to a marked increase of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and glutamate release, in parallel with a decrease of interleukin (IL)-6. No changes were observed relatively to IL-1β and S100B secretion. Curiously, both α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor antagonist and TNF-α antibody partially prevented the myelination defects that followed UCB exposure. These data point to a detrimental role of UCB in OL maturation and myelination together with astrocytosis, microgliosis, and both inflammatory and excitotoxic responses, which collectively may account for myelin deficits following moderate to severe neonatal jaundice.  相似文献

Pentapharsodinium dalei is a widely distributed cold-water dinoflagellate, which is used in palaeoecology as an indicator of relatively warmer conditions in polar and sub-polar regions. This species has been proposed to be one of the first indicators of global warming at high latitudes. We developed the first microsatellite markers for P. dalei to facilitate the study of spatial and temporal population genetic changes. Single cysts were isolated from surface sediments in Koljö Fjord, Sweden. After cyst germination, single vegetative cells were isolated for establishing monoclonal cultures. Six dinucleotide polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed as multiplex polymerase chain reactions and were genotyped in 32 strains. The number of alleles per locus varied between 4 and 12, and the estimated gene diversity varied from 0.588 to 0.891. The haploid state of the vegetative cells was confirmed. The six selected microsatellites will be useful to explore population dynamics in P. dalei from contemporary planktonic and revived benthic samples to enable, for example, detailed studies into the evolutionary consequences of anthropogenic and climate-driven habitat changes.  相似文献
