Students whose school environment fits their developmental needs also typically experience academic success and increased motivation. Most investigations of school fit, which focus on teachers’ and students’ perceptions, have found a general decline in fit across the transition from elementary to middle school. However, little research has examined the school-child fit from the parent perspective. In this article, we first detail the development process behind a new survey measure of parent perceptions of school fit. Second, using three online panel-based samples of parents from across the country (n1 = 323, n2 = 188, n3 = 1,033), we evaluate the scale's measurement properties and conduct exploratory analyses examining grade-level and income-based differences on reported school fit. Finally, in line with previous research, we find that parents of middle school children perceived statistically significantly worse fit than parents of elementary school children. Among parents of high school students, we found that, on average, high-income parents perceive statistically significantly better fit than low-income parents. 相似文献

The activities of superoxide dismutase and guaiacol-dependent peroxidase were studied in the ontogenesis of recessive homozygous
mutants ofArabidopsis thaliana Heynh.le-2 andnfz24, which are characterized by two- to threefold increases in tolerance to the herbicide norflurazone. The mutantsle-2 andnfz24 differed from the initial race Dijon in some phenotypic features, duration of ontogenetic stages, and dynamics of the superoxide
dismutase and peroxidase activities in ontogenesis. A single treatment of plants with norflurazone induced an accelerated
increase in the level of both enzymes in the mutants as compared to the wild type plants. Under the conditions of multiple
treatment with norflurazone, the mutantsle-2 andnfz24 displayed a higher tolerance to the bleaching effect of the herbicide and were characterized by a higher level of superoxide
dismutase. The data obtained suggest that the superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities are controlled by both ontogenetic

Remote locations, such as oceanic islands, typically harbour relatively few species, some of which go on to generate endemic radiations. Species colonising these locations tend to be a non‐random subset from source communities, which is thought to reflect dispersal limitation. However, non‐random colonisation could also result from habitat filtering, whereby only a few continental species can become established. We evaluate the imprints of these processes on the Galápagos flora by analysing a comprehensive regional phylogeny for ~ 39 000 species alongside information on dispersal strategies and climatic suitability. We found that habitat filtering was more important than dispersal limitation in determining species composition. This finding may help explain why adaptive radiation is common on oceanic archipelagoes – because colonising species can be relatively poor dispersers with specific niche requirements. We suggest that the standard assumption that plant communities in remote locations are primarily shaped by dispersal limitation deserves reconsideration. 相似文献

The aerial parts of Chromolaena pulchella biosynthesize two groups of diterpenes belonging to opposite enantiomeric series, specifically, the furanoid ent-clerodanes (5R,8R,9S,10R)-(-)-hardwikiic acid (1), methyl (5R,8R,9S,10R)-(-)-hardwikiate (2), (5S,8R,9S,10R)-(-)-hautriwaic acid lactone (3), methyl (5R,8R,9S,10R)-(-)-nidoresedate (4) and methyl (8R,9R)-(-)-strictate (5), as well as the labdanes (5S,8R,9R,10S)-(+)-(13E)-labd-13-ene-8,15-diol (6) and (5S,8R,9R,10S)-(+)-isoabienol (7). The absolute configuration of the two groups of diterpenes was unambiguously assigned by comparison of the vibrational circular dichroism spectra of 3 for ent-clerodanes, and of 7 for labdanes with their theoretical spectra obtained by density functional theory calculations. The results support a biogenetic proposal to diterpenes found in the studied botanical species. 相似文献

Most of the studies carried out in the past on economically important fish species rely on single species approach. Ecosystem dynamics are characterized by complex interaction among species, sharing common habitat needs and thus forming characteristic assemblages. The analysis of spatio-temporal variability of fish community, coupled to the analysis of spatial indices, provides a synthetic view of the fish community status evidencing, if any, the way a community changes. Such considerations drive also to the development of ecosystem-based fishery management paradigm. In the present study changes in pelagic fish community structure in an upwelling ecosystem of the central Mediterranean Sea during the last 10 years was analysed, by focusing the attention on the five most abundant small pelagic species: Engraulis encrasicolus, Sardina pilchardus, Sardinella aurita, Trachurus trachurus and Boops boops. Our results evidenced a quite stable community structure, characterized by spatial occupation strongly driven by ecosystem characteristics and modulated according to specie-specific behaviour. Obtained results lead us to hypothesize that the observed stability of community could be linked to the presence of different environments leading to efficient space partitioning and resources utilization among species. 相似文献

The potential use of Bacillus thuringiensis UM96 as a biocontrol agent for the grey mould phytopathogen Botrytis cinerea was evaluated. In order to dissect the mode of action of this UM96 strain, we also examined the role of lytic activities in the antagonism. First, B. thuringiensis UM96 was characterised based on 16S rRNA and gyrA gene sequencing and phenotypic traits. Petri dish biocontrol assays demonstrated that when strain UM96 was inoculated 24 h previous to B. cinerea, the mycelial growth was inhibited by up to 70%. Test for lytic enzymes activities of cellulase and glucanase was negative. Chitinase was the only positive enzyme activity in two different culture media. PCR detection of the chiB gene was also positive. Chitinolytic supernatants, obtained from rich and minimal media supplemented with colloidal chitin as the sole carbon source, from B. thuringiensis UM96 showed a strong inhibitory effect of B. cinerea that was not observed with heat-treated supernatant. Interestingly, when the supernatant was supplemented with 100 µM allosamidin, a chitinase specific inhibitor, the antagonistic activity was suppressed significantly. A lack of chitinase activity was also observed in allosamidin-treated supernatants. Our pathogenic B. cinerea strain also exhibited susceptibility to pure Streptomyces griseus chitinase. Finally, the chitinolytic strain B. thuringiensis UM96 was able to protect Medicago truncatula plants in vitro from B. cinerea infection and significantly reduced the necrotic zones and root browning of the plants. Together, these results suggest a potential use of B. thuringiensis UM96 for the biological control of B. cinerea and a role for chitinases during the antagonism displayed. 相似文献

Background
Pure mucinous adenocarcinoma of the breast is a rare entity characterized by the production of variable amounts of mucin comprising 1% to 6% of breast carcinomas. Some mucinous adenocarcinomas have shown expression of intestinal differentiation markers such as MUC-2. This study examines the expression of intestinal differentiation markers in this type of breast carcinoma.Results
Twenty-two cases of pure mucinous adenocarcinoma of the breast were assessed. Immunochemistry was performed for beta-catenin, CDX-2 and MUC-2. All cases were positive for B-catenin. MUC-2 positivity was observed in all cases; 63. 6% were 3 plus positive. All cases were negative for CDX-2.Conclusions
These results suggest that mucinous breast carcinomas express some markers of intestinal differentiation, such as MUC-2 and beta-catenin; however, future studies with a larger series of cases and using molecular techniques that help affirm these results are needed. 相似文献109.

Leishmania mexicana (Lm) causes localized (LCL) and diffuse (DCL) cutaneous leishmaniasis. DCL patients have a poor cellular immune response leading to chronicity. It has been proposed that CD8 T lymphocytes (CD8) play a crucial role in infection clearance, although the role of CD8 cytotoxicity in disease control has not been elucidated. Lesions of DCL patients have been shown to harbor low numbers of CD8, as compared to patients with LCL, and leishmanicidal treatment restores CD8 numbers. The marked response of CD8 towards Leishmania parasites led us to analyze possible functional differences between CD8 from patients with LCL and DCL. We compared IFNγ production, antigen-specific proliferation, and cytotoxicity of CD8 purified from PBMC against autologous macrophages (MO) infected with Leishmania mexicana (MOi). Additionally, we analyzed tissue biopsies from both groups of patients for evidence of cytotoxicity associated with apoptotic cells in the lesions. We found that CD8 cell of DCL patients exhibited low cytotoxicity, low antigen-specific proliferation and low IFNγ production when stimulated with MOi, as compared to LCL patients. Additionally, DCL patients had significantly less TUNEL+ cells in their lesions. These characteristics are similar to cellular "exhaustion" described in chronic infections. We intended to restore the functional capacity of CD8 cells of DCL patients by preincubating them with TLR2 agonists: Lm lipophosphoglycan (LPG) or Pam3Cys. Cytotoxicity against MOi, antigen-specific proliferation and IFNγ production were restored with both stimuli, whereas PD-1 (a molecule associated with cellular exhaustion) expression, was reduced. Our work suggests that CD8 response is associated with control of Lm infection in LCL patients and that chronic infection in DCL patients leads to a state of CD8 functional exhaustion, which could facilitate disease spread. This is the first report that shows the presence of functionally exhausted CD8 T lymphocytes in DCL patients and, additionally, that pre-stimulation with TLR2 ligands can restore the effector mechanisms of CD8 T lymphocytes from DCL patients against Leishmania mexicana-infected macrophages. 相似文献

At two temperate pasturelands in northern Mexico, we explored possible competition for food and space under pats during the simultaneous nesting periods of the univoltine species Dichotomius colonicus (Say), Phanaeus quadridens (Say), and Copris sierrensis Matthews. To simulate unlimited resources, 50 5-kg cow dung pats were placed at regular distance intervals in each pastureland. After building trenches around the pats, the number and depth of each nest, as well as larval development status, were documented once for a period of 1-8 mo. Analyses of variance and association tests were used to make a between-site comparison of dung pat occupation, nests occupied per species, nests per dung pat, and nest depth below each pat. The proportion of pats occupied by each species differed significantly between sites. C. sierrensis colonizing most pats at one site and D. colonicus at the other. There were no differences between sites in the frequency of pats occupied by more than one species. The association test and Ochiai index showed that each species colonized dung pats independently. The results suggest that pat occupation depended on their location by beetles and the relative abundance of each species. The species tended to dig nests at different depths, possibly reducing interspecific competition for space. It can therefore be concluded that, when food resources seem to be unlimited, they are shared following a "lottery dynamic" model if there is spatial differentiation among species. 相似文献
