There is a lack of standardized methodology for normalizing various indices of muscle strength and movement performance tests for differences in body size in human movement-related disciplines. Most of the data presented in the literature have been body size dependent, which precludes both comparisons between subjects and establishment of standards for specific subject populations. The goal of the present review was to propose standardized tests that normalize physical performance tests to body size. Specifically, we propose (a) using an allometric normalization based on theoretical models that presume geometric similarity, (b) using classification of performance tests based on particular values of the allometric parameters required for normalization, and (c) using a simple "performance index" that represents an individual or group performance relative to a reference population. Correspondences between theory and experimental findings and limitations are discussed. 相似文献

Polarized exocytosis plays a major role in development and cell differentiation but the mechanisms that target exocytosis to specific membrane domains in animal cells are still poorly understood. We characterized Drosophila Sec6, a component of the exocyst complex that is believed to tether secretory vesicles to specific plasma membrane sites. sec6 mutations cause cell lethality and disrupt plasma membrane growth. In developing photoreceptor cells (PRCs), Sec6 but not Sec5 or Sec8 shows accumulation at adherens junctions. In late PRCs, Sec6, Sec5, and Sec8 colocalize at the rhabdomere, the light sensing subdomain of the apical membrane. PRCs with reduced Sec6 function accumulate secretory vesicles and fail to transport proteins to the rhabdomere, but show normal localization of proteins to the apical stalk membrane and the basolateral membrane. Furthermore, we show that Rab11 forms a complex with Sec5 and that Sec5 interacts with Sec6 suggesting that the exocyst is a Rab11 effector that facilitates protein transport to the apical rhabdomere in Drosophila PRCs. 相似文献

Synchronizing the convergence of the two-oppositely moving DNA replication machineries at specific termination sites is a tightly coordinated process in bacteria. In Escherichia coli, a “replication fork trap” – found within a chromosomal region where forks are allowed to enter but not leave – is set by the protein–DNA roadblock Tus–Ter. The exact sequence of events by which Tus–Ter blocks replisomes approaching from one direction but not the other has been the subject of controversy for many decades. Specific protein–protein interactions between the nonpermissive face of Tus and the approaching helicase were challenged by biochemical and structural studies. These studies show that it is the helicase-induced strand separation that triggers the formation of new Tus–Ter interactions at the nonpermissive face – interactions that result in a highly stable “locked” complex. This controversy recently gained renewed attention as three single-molecule-based studies scrutinized this elusive Tus–Ter mechanism – leading to new findings and refinement of existing models, but also generating new questions. Here, we discuss and compare the findings of each of the single-molecule studies to find their common ground, pinpoint the crucial differences that remain, and push the understanding of this bipartite DNA–protein system further. 相似文献

Sublethal effects of an azadirachtin-based botanical insecticide (commercial product NeemAzal-T/S) on behaviour, life history traits and population growth of one commercial (Dutch strain, D) and two Serbian populations (Bujanovac, B; Negotin, N) of Encarsia formosa Gahan were evaluated in laboratory bioassays. In a two-choice test, parasitoids from all tested populations preferred to parasitise the untreated whitefly nymphs over those treated with 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25 and 3.12?mg/l of azadirachtin. All concentrations caused significant deterrent effects after 24?h, and the following deterrence indices were calculated: 9.7–60.9% (B), 5.5–57.5% (N) and 12.9–63.5% (D). The longevity of adults exposed for 48?h to residues of the botanical insecticide (applied at LC50) was shorter (1.5–1.7 days) than that of control wasps. Both daily and total parasitism were significantly reduced (by 41.7, 48.3 and 60.1% for N, D and B, respectively) compared to control, as well as adult emergence in the F1 generation. The instantaneous rate of increase (ri) of surviving adults was also significantly reduced (by 13.2, 19. 3 and 20.5%, for populations N, B, and D, respectively). Adults from all tested populations, emerged from pupae treated with the botanical insecticide applied at LC50, showed reduced parasitism, adult emergence, and ri levels, but the reduction was significant only for adult emergence of B and ri of B and N. Juvenile development of the parasitoid in treated pupae was significantly extended, compared to control. The implications of these results on integrated control of the greenhouse whitefly are discussed. 相似文献

Summary We have analyzed a combined use of the two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser effect in the laboratory frame (NOESY) and in the rotating frame (ROESY) to determine interproton distances and correlation time in medium-sized rigid molecules (Davis, 1987). This method can be applied in the intermediate motional regime, 0.2 < oc, < 5, (c, correlation time, (o resonance frequency). Error limits depend on the motional regime and are smallest near oc=1.14.The method was tested on six geminal proton pairs in the bicyclic octapeptide (S-deoxo--[R]-OH-Ile3 amaninamide, Mw =870) for which at 297 K in DMSO, a correlation time of 1.0 ns, with a standard deviation of 0.12 ns, and an interproton distance of 1.87 Å, with standard deviation of 0.04 Å, are obtained. 相似文献

Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) in Drosophila melanogaster represent the basis of chemical communication being involved in many important biological functions. The aim of this study was to characterize chemical composition and variation of cuticular profiles in five D. melanogaster strains. These strains were reared for approximately 300 generations on five diets: standard cornmeal medium and substrates prepared with apple, banana, tomato, and carrot. Differences in quantity and/or quality in CHCs were assumed as a result of activation of different metabolic pathways involved in food digestion and adaptations to the particular diet type. In total, independently of sex and strain, 66 chemical compounds were identified. In females of all strains, 60 compounds were identified, while, in males, 47 compounds were extracted. Certain new chemical compounds for D. melanogaster were found. MANOVA confirmed that CHC amounts significantly depend on sex and substrates, as well as on their interactions. Discriminant analysis revealed that flies belonging to ‘apple’ and ‘carrot’ strains exhibited the most noticeable differences in CHC repertoires. A non‐hydrocarbon pheromone, cis‐vaccenyl acetate (cVA) also contributed to the variation in the pheromone bouquet among the strains. Variability detected in CHCs and cVA may be used in the explanation of differences in mating behaviour previously determined in analyzed fly strains. 相似文献

The aim of this research is to determine the probability of anterior and posterior presentation during the second half of
gestation and at delivery among albino mice. Each day from the 10th to the 21st day of gestation, foetal presentation and lie were determined in uteri of six pregnant females. The chi-square test did not
show any statistically significant difference in the incidence of anterior and posterior presentation between the right and
left horn. In addition, there was no significant difference between anterior and posterior presentation in relation to the
site in the horn or in relation to gestation days. At delivery, there was no significant difference in the incidence of anterior
and posterior presentation (29 versus 31 cases). The results show that, in the albino mouse, foetal presentation during the
second half of gestation and at birth is accidental, with equal probability for anterior and posterior presentation. 相似文献
