Studies on methanol-oxidizing yeasts

A series of yeast strains utilizing methanol as the only source of carbon and energy were isolated both from soil and waste waters. Growth of the yeasts was studied in a mineral medium with yeast extract at 30°C. Growth parameters, Q_{o 2} and composition of biomass were studied in the strain 11Bh producing in shaken flasks highest yields of biomass. The biomass was found to contain 44% of crude proteins, 2% esterified fatty acids, 3% non-esterified fatty acids, 6% RNA and 0.25% DNA. Amino acid analysis revealed a high content of essential amino acids, lysine, leucine, valine and threonine in particular.

Scleronodular type of Hodgkin''s disease: experience at the Centre hospitalier universitaire de SherbrookeThe nodular sclerosis type of Hodgkin''s disease appears to be a distinct clinical entity. However, the incidence, the initial localization of the tumour and the survival of the patients are variable. The present study was carried out on a group of 17 patients, all French Canadians living in the province of Quebec, from a total of 31 with Hodgkin''s disease, an incidence of 55%. There were more males (10) than females (7). The mean age of the group was 37 years, but that of the females was lower than that of the males. The mediastinum was involved at the onset in 47% of the patients. The initial staging (according to the classification of Rye) in 76% of the patients was I or II.Four patients showed disease below the diaphragm. The lungs were infiltrated three times, the spleen six times, and the liver five times. The duration of survival of the 17 patients was twice that of the patients with the three other types of the disease.

Summary This article describes two forms of oak forests occurring in the Mecsek-Mts. in Hungary: the Cotino-Quercetum pubescentis mecsekense, and the Orno-Quercetum mecsekense.     

Underground dry weight in the grassland communities ofArrhenatheretum elatioris alopecuretosum pratensis R. Tx. 1937 andMesobrometum erecti stipetosum Vicherek 1960

The meadow plant communities,Arrhenatheretum elatioris alopecuretosum pratensis R. Tx. 1937 andMesobrometum erecti stipetosum Vicherek 1960, were chosen for investigations of the underground plant parts. Apparent differences in underground dry weight and its seasonal changes in both the communities were observed. Differences in the soil environment in different periods of the year are reflected in the character of time changes in underground dry weight. The soil environment affects not only the total underground biomass and their changes in time, but also the activity of soil microflora and, consequently, the decomposition rate of dead underground plant parts.     

Serum Enzyme Activity of Newborn Calves,Pigs, and Lambs

Serum activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AspAT = GOT), alanine aminotransferase (AlAT = GPT), and total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) have been investigated in newborn calves, pigs, and lambs. In the two latter species the LDH isoenzyme distribution in serum was also studied. Blood samples were taken at frequent intervals from birth to 48–72 hrs. post partum. Calves and pigs were born with very low serum enzyme values, whereas lambs showed a picture more similar to what has been reported in human infants. In all species a marked temporary enzyme increase occurred during the first 24–48 hrs. This elevation was found not to be due to colostrum feeding, since a parallel increase was found in starved animals. Possible regulating mechanisms are discussed. The LDH isoenzyme pattern proved to be more stable than total LDH in the early post-natal period. The percentage isoenzyme distribution, however, showed characteristic differences from that found in adult animals of the same species.     

Carotenoids of Thiorhodaceae

Summary The isolation, morphology and growth chracteristics of pure cultures of a Thiothece, Lamprocystis and Thiodictyon strain are described.Their carotenoid composition is reported. The Thiothece strain produced in addition to okenone (1), several related ketocarotenoids, among which a demethylated okenone (6) was identified by a small scale total synthesis. Thiodictyon and Lamprocystis produced carotenoids of the rhodopinal (previously warmingone) series, the latter organism contained as major carotenoids a lycopenol (4), not previously found in Nature, and a cross-conjugated lycopenal (2), previously called anhydro-warmingone.Part 7.
