The rapidly growing world population puts considerable pressure on the scarce natural resources, and there is an urgent need to develop more efficient and sustainable agricultural production systems to feed the growing population. This should be based on an initial assessment of the physical and biological potential of natural resources, which can vary greatly. The agroecological zonation (AEZ) approach presents a useful preliminary evaluation of this potential, and ensures that representation is maintained at an appropriate biogeographic scale for regional sustainable development planning. The principal AEZs of the world, as described by the Technical Advisory Committee of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, are presented along with their extent and characteristics. Net primary productivity of terrestrial vegetation can be assessed from weather data, and it varies from 1 t dry matter ha-1 yr-1 in high latitude zones and dry regions to 29 t ha-1 yr-1 in tropical wet regions, depending on the climatic conditions. To assess the crop production potential, length of the growing period zones, a concept introduced by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, is very useful as it describes an area within which rainfall and temperature conditions are suitable for crop growth for a given number of days in the year. These data, combined with the information on soils and known requirements of different food crops, can be used to assess the potential crop productivity. Some perspectives on AEZs and crop production potential are presented by describing the manner in which production potential can be integrated with present constraints. Efforts to intensify production should place emphasis on methods appropriate to the socio-economic conditions in a given AEZ, and on promotion of conservation-effective and sustainable production systems to meet the food, fodder and fuel needs for the future. <br> 相似文献

AbstractThe most common brain disorder of late life is Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which is highly complicating dementia. There are several drug targets which are reported to control the severe level of AD; notably, acetylcholinesterase, β-Secretase and glycogen synthase kinase enzymes are approached as a good drug targets for AD. Hence, the present study mainly focused to discover newly synthesized molecule (7-propyl-6H-pyrano[3,2-c:5,6-c']dichromene-6,8(7H)-dione) as a potential triplet acting drug for above said enzymes through the analysis of X-ray crystallography, molecular docking, molecular dynamics and quantum chemical calculation. The target drug molecule was crystallized in the monoclinic crystal structure with P21/n space group. The structure was solved by SHELXS and refined by SHELXL. The crystal packing is stabilized by C???H···O type of interactions. Further, the induced fit docking shows that the molecule has high docking score, glide energy, favorable hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions on the protein targets. The molecular dynamics simulation was performed to understand the stability of the molecule in the presence of active site environment. Finally, quantum chemical calculation has been carried out for the molecule in gas phase and for the corresponding molecule lifted from the active site region. Amylases constitute one of the most important groups of enzymes for commercial use. In the present study, production of α-amylase was optimized using a newly isolated actinobacterial strain from the coral reef environment of the Gulf of Mannar
Biosphere Reserve, India. It was identified as Streptomyces sp. ML12 based on chemotaxonomy, cultural and morphological characteristics, carbon source utilization and 16S rRNA gene
sequencing. Fermentation variables were selected in accordance with the Plackett-Burman design and were optimized by response
surface methodology. Five significant variables (rice bran and wheat bran — both agricultural byproducts, sodium chloride,
magnesium sulphate and incubation period) were selected for the optimization via central composite design. The optimal features
were rice bran (5.5 g/100 mL), wheat bran (5.3 g/100 mL), sodium chloride (2.8 g/100 mL), magnesium sulphate (1.4 g/100 mL)
and 8 days of incubation period. Optimization of the medium with the above tested features increased the amylase yield by

The tropical spice crop ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is highly susceptible to soft rot disease caused by the necrotrophic oomycete Pythium aphanidermatum (Edson) Fitzp. However, Zingiber zerumbet (L.) Smith, a wild relative of ginger, is resistant to P. aphanidermatum and has been proposed as a potential donor for soft rot resistance to Z. officinale. We identified a member of the pathogenesis-related protein group 5 (PR-5) gene family in Z. zerumbet that is expressed constitutively but upregulated in response to infection by P. aphanidermatum. Expression of this gene was upregulated as early as 1.5 h post inoculation (hpi) with the pathogen, peaked at 6 hpi, declined
by 9 hpi, and again peaked at 15 hpi before declining at 48 hpi. A cDNA of this PR-5 gene, designated as ZzPR5, encodes a 226-amino-acid predicted protein with a calculated pI of 5.05. The N terminus of this protein contains a 22-amino-acid signal peptide, suggesting that the protein may show apoplastic
accumulation like other acidic PR-5 proteins. Phylogenetic analysis revealed high similarity between ZzPR5 and PR-5 proteins
reported from other plant species, especially from other Zingiberales. Molecular modeling of ZzPR5 protein revealed an acidic
surface cleft, a feature characteristic of glycoside hydrolases and antifungal PR-5 proteins. In molecular docking studies,
a linear polymeric molecule of (1,3)-β-d-glucan, a major constituent of the oomycete cell wall, fitted favorably into the surface cleft of ZzPR5 and interacted with
acidic amino acids known to be involved in glucan hydrolysis, suggesting a potential antioomycete activity for ZzPR5 protein.
Elucidation of the molecular mechanism of ZzPR5 may provide important insight toward engineering soft rot resistance into
