In light of the worldwide epidemic of obesity, and in recognition of hypertension as a major factor in the cardiovascular morbidity and mortality associated with obesity, The Obesity Society and The American Society of Hypertension agreed to jointly sponsor a position paper on obesity‐related hypertension to be published jointly in the journals of each society. The purpose is to inform the members of both societies, as well as practicing clinicians, with a timely review of the association between obesity and high blood pressure, the risk that this association entails, and the options for rational, evidenced‐based treatment. The position paper is divided into six sections plus a summary as follows: pathophysiology, epidemiology and cardiovascular risk, the metabolic syndrome, lifestyle management in prevention and treatment, pharmacologic treatment of hypertension in the obese, and the medical and surgical treatment of obesity in obese hypertensive patients. Synonymous substitution rates have been shown to vary among evolutionary
lineages of both nuclear and organellar genes across a broad range of
taxonomic groups. In animals, rate heterogeneity does not appear to be
correlated across nuclear and mitochondrial genes. In this paper, we
contrast substitution rates in two plant groups and show that grasses
evolve more rapidly than palms at synonymous sites in a mitochondrial, a
nuclear, and a plastid gene. Furthermore, we show that the relative rates
of synonymous substitution between grasses and palms are similar at the
three loci. The correlation in synonymous substitution rates across genes
is particularly striking because the three genes evolve at very different
absolute rates. In contrast, relative rates of nonsynonymous substitution
are not conserved among the three genes.

Reports of declining male fertility have renewed interest in assessing the role of environmental and occupational exposures to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) in the aetiology of human infertility. Testicular functions are particularly susceptible to electromagnetic fields. The aim of the present work was to investigate the effect of 10-GHz EMF on male albino rat's reproductive system and to investigate the possible causative factor for such effect of exposure. The study was carried out in two groups of 70-day old adult male albino rats: a sham-exposed and a 10-GHz-exposed group (2?h a day for 45 days). Immediately after completion of the exposure, animals were sacrificed and sperms were extracted from the cauda and caput part of testis for the analysis of MDA, melatonin, and creatine kinase. Creatine kinase results revealed an increased level of phosphorylation that converts creatine to creatine phosphate in sperms after EMF exposure. EMF exposure also reduced the level of melatonin and MDA. It is concluded that microwave exposure could adversely affect male fertility by reducing availability of the above parameters. These results are indications of deleterious effects of these radiations on reproductive pattern of male rats. 相似文献

Previous studies have established that in response to wounding, the expression of amyloid precursor-like protein 2 (APLP2) in the basal cells of migrating corneal epithelium is greatly up-regulated. To further our understanding of the functional significance of APLP2 in wound healing, we have measured the migratory response of transfected Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells expressing APLP2 isoforms to a variety of extracellular matrix components including laminin, collagen types I, IV, and VII, fibronectin, and heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs). CHO cells overexpressing either of two APLP2 variants, differing in chondroitin sulfate (CS) attachment, exhibit a marked increase in chemotaxis toward type IV collagen and fibronectin but not to laminin, collagen types I and VII, and HSPGs. Cells overexpressing APLP2-751 (CS-modified) exhibited a greater migratory response to fibronectin and type IV collagen than their non-CS-attached counterparts (APLP2-763), suggesting that CS modification enhanced APLP2 effects on cell migration. Moreover, in the presence of chondroitin sulfate, transfectants overexpressing APLP2-751 failed to exhibit this enhanced migration toward fibronectin. The APLP2-ECM interactions were also explored by solid phase adhesion assays. While overexpression of APLP2 isoforms moderately enhanced CHO adhesion to laminin, collagen types I and VII, and HSPGs lines, especially those overexpressing APLP2-751, exhibited greatly increased adhesion to type IV collagen and fibronectin. These observations suggest that APLP2 contributes to re-epithelialization during wound healing by supporting epithelial cell adhesion to fibronectin and collagen IV, thus influencing their capacity to migrate over the wound bed. Furthermore, APLP2 interactions with fibronectin and collagen IV appear to be potentiated by the addition of a CS chain to the core proteins. 相似文献

Man-made microwave and radiofrequency (RF) radiation technologies have been steadily increasing with the growing demand of electronic appliances such as microwave oven and cell phones. These appliances affect biological systems by increasing free radicals, thus leading to oxidative damage. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of 2.45 GHz microwave radiation on histology and the level of lipid peroxide (LPO) in Wistar rats. Sixty-day-old male Wistar rats with 180 ± 10 g body weight were used for this study. Animals were divided into two groups: sham exposed (control) and microwave exposed. These animals were exposed for 2 h a day for 35 d to 2.45 GHz microwave radiation (power density, 0.2 mW/cm2). The whole-body specific absorption rate (SAR) was estimated to be 0.14 W/kg. After completion of the exposure period, rats were sacrificed, and brain, liver, kidney, testis and spleen were stored/preserved for determination of LPO and histological parameters. Significantly high level of LPO was observed in the liver (p < 0.001), brain (p < 0.004) and spleen (p < 0.006) in samples from rats exposed to microwave radiation. Also histological changes were observed in the brain, liver, testis, kidney and spleen after whole-body microwave exposure, compared to the control group.
Based on the results obtained in this study, we conclude that exposure to microwave radiation 2 h a day for 35 d can potentially cause histopathology and oxidative changes in Wistar rats. These results indicate possible implications of such exposure on human health. 相似文献
