Nutrient leaching from forest substrate after clear-cutting and subsequent soil preparation is strongly influenced by the capacity of ground vegetation to sequester the released nutrients. We studied the rates and patterns of biomass and nutrient accumulation in ground vegetation growing on ridges, in furrows and on undisturbed surfaces for 2–5 years after disc-plowing in eastern Finland. The biomass of mosses on ridges remained significantly lower than that in furrows and on undisturbed surfaces. Field layer biomass on ridges and in furrows was significantly lower than on undisturbed surfaces throughout the study period. Field layer biomass increased more on ridges than in furrows. Root biomass on ridges and undisturbed surfaces was considerably higher than in furrows. Five years after disc-plowing, total biomass and nutrient pools for ridges (biomass 4,975 kg ha−1, N 40 kg ha−1, P 5 kg ha−1, K 20 kg ha−1 and Ca 18 kg ha−1) and undisturbed surfaces (biomass 5,613 kg ha−1, N 43 kg ha−1, P 5 kg ha−1, K 22 kg ha−1 and Ca 18 kg ha−1) were similar, but considerably lower for furrows (biomass 1,807 kg ha−1, N 16 kg ha−1, P 2 kg ha−1, K 10 kg ha−1 and Ca 6 kg ha−1). Ridges covered 25% of the area, furrows 30 and 45% was undisturbed surfaces. Taking into account the proportion of each type of surface, values for the whole prepared clear-cut area were 4,312, 34, 4, 18 and 14 kg ha−1 for biomass, N, P, K and Ca, respectively. Biomass and nutrient pools had not returned to uncut forest levels at the end of the 5-year study period. The results indicate that mosses and field layer vegetation respond differently to soil preparation, that the development of biomass on ridges, in furrows and on undisturbed surfaces proceeds at different rates, and that the biomass and nutrient uptake of ground vegetation remains below pre-site preparation levels for several years. doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2010.00427.x Associations of instrumental activities of daily living and handgrip strength with oral self‐care among home‐dwelling elderly 75+ Objective: To study the associations of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and the handgrip strength with oral self‐care among dentate home‐dwelling elderly people in Finland. Materials and methods: The study analysed data for 168 dentate participants (mean age 80.6 years) in the population‐based Geriatric Multidisciplinary Strategy for Good Care of the Elderly (GeMS) study. Each participant received a clinical oral examination and structured interview in 2004–2005. Functional status was assessed using the IADL scale and handgrip strength was measured using handheld dynamometry. Results: Study participants with high IADL (scores 7–8) had odds ratios (ORs) for brushing their teeth at least twice a day of 2.7 [95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.1–6.8], for using toothpaste at least twice a day of 2.0 (CI 0.8–5.2) and for having good oral hygiene of 2.8 (CI 1.0–8.3) when compared with participants with low IADL (scores ≤6). Participants in the upper tertiles of the handgrip strength had ORs for brushing the teeth at least twice a day of 0.9 (CI 0.4–1.9), for using the toothpaste at least twice a day of 0.9 (CI 0.4–1.8) and for good oral hygiene of 1.1 (CI 0.5–2.4) in comparison with the study subjects in the lowest tertile of handgrip strength. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the functional status, measured by means of the IADL scale, but not handgrip strength, is an important determinant of oral self‐care among the home‐dwelling elderly.  相似文献

During the past 50 years, the high acoustic sensitivity and the echolocation behavior of dolphins and other small odontocetes have been studied thoroughly. However, understanding has been scarce as to how the dolphin cochlea is stimulated by high frequency echoes, and likewise regarding the ear mechanics affecting dolphin audiograms. The characteristic impedance of mammalian soft tissues is similar to that of water, and thus no radical refractions of sound, nor reflections of sound, can be expected at the water/soft tissue interfaces. Consequently, a sound-collecting terrestrial pinna and an outer ear canal serve little purpose in underwater hearing. Additionally, compared to terrestrial mammals whose middle ear performs an impedance match from air to the cochlea, the impedance match performed by the odontocete middle ear needs to be reversed to perform an opposite match from water to the cochlea. In this paper, we discuss anatomical adaptations of dolphins: a lower jaw collecting sound, thus replacing the terrestrial outer ear pinna, and a thin and large tympanic bone plate replacing the tympanic membrane of terrestrial mammals. The paper describes the lower jaw anatomy and hypothetical middle ear mechanisms explaining both the high sensitivity and the converted acoustic impedance match.  相似文献

The objective of this retrospective follow-up study was to evaluate the outcome of patients with soft-tissue sarcoma treated by the authors' protocol, which consists of a selective combination of conservative surgery and radiotherapy. Patients who relapsed were especially evaluated to improve treatment results. The authors examined 80 patients with local soft-tissue sarcoma in the upper extremity referred to their multidisciplinary group. Fifteen patients were referred for first or subsequent local recurrence, and 65 patients were treated for primary tumor. The goal of treatment was local control and preservation of a functional limb. Wide excision was attempted. If the margin was less than 2.5 cm, postoperative radiotherapy was administered. Eighty-five percent of the patients were treated by limb salvage. Thirty patients needed reconstructive procedures such as pedicled (20 patients) or free flaps (10 patients). No free flaps were lost. The 5-year disease-specific overall survival rate was 75 percent, the local recurrence-free survival rate was 79 percent, and the metastasis-free survival rate was 68 percent. In univariate analysis, prognostic factors for local recurrence were extracompartmental site; for development of metastases, large size and extracompartmental site; and for decreased disease-specific overall survival, large size and extracompartmental site. Intramuscular, cutaneous, and subcutaneous tumors had a 5-year local control rate of 100 percent, and extracompartmental tumors had a local control rate of 69 percent. Extracompartmental tumors clearly have the worst prognosis and should be the main target for improving treatment strategies. After exclusion of patients with inadequate treatment according to the authors' protocol, the local control rate at 5 years was 90 percent. The volatile organic compound composition (VOCs) of printing press air wasfound to contain mostly ethanol, but also ethyl acetate, 1-propanol, 2-propanol,1-methoxy-2-propanol and 3-ethoxy-1-propanol. A pilot plant bioscrubber inoculatedwith a mixed microbial population was constructed on-site. The bioscrubber wasable to treat the polluted gas efficiently. It, however, suffered from strong wall growthand blockages in the column. The efficiencies of the pilot plant and a bioreactor iscompared. The yeasts Candida guilliermondii and Saccharomyces cerevisiae known to tolerate ethanol were selected instead of mixed population to avoid the wall growth and blockages in the bioreactor. The removal of the VOCs both individually and as a complex mixture was tested in a microcultivation system and in continuous chemostat cultures with and without cell recycling. The Candida yeast could use all the compounds as a carbon source while growth of S. cerevisiae was markedly slower on the methoxylated and ethoxylated propanols. Best total removal of the VOCs was 99% and achieved by C. guilliermondii. The only compound that was not totally removable in the chemostat experiment with C. guilliermondii was 1-methoxy-2-propanol. In laboratory scale the total and volumetric removal of VOCs by C. guilliermondii was more efficient compared to the pilot plant encouraging to scale up and applying the yeast bioreactor to real field conditions.  相似文献

Human membrane primary amine oxidase (hAOC3; also known as vascular adhesion protein-1, VAP-1) is expressed upon inflammation in most tissues, where its enzymatic activity plays a crucial role in leukocyte trafficking. We have determined two new structures of a soluble, proteolytically cleaved form of hAOC3 (sAOC3), which was extracted from human plasma. In the 2.6 ? sAOC3 structure, an imidazole molecule is hydrogen bonded to the topaquinone (TPQ) cofactor, which is in an inactive on-copper conformation, while in the 2.95 ? structure, an imidazole molecule is covalently bound to the active off-copper conformation of TPQ. A second imidazole bound by Tyr394 and Thr212 was identified in the substrate channel. We furthermore demonstrated that imidazole has an inhibitory role at high concentrations used in crystallization. A triple mutant (Met211Val/Tyr394Asn/Leu469Gly) of hAOC3 was previously reported to change substrate preferences toward those of hAOC2, another human copper-containing monoamine oxidase. We now mutated these three residues and Thr212 individually to study their distinct role in the substrate specificity of hAOC3. Using enzyme activity assays, the effect of the four single mutations was tested with four different substrates (methylamine, benzylamine, 2-phenylethylamine, and p-tyramine), and their binding modes were predicted by docking studies. As a result, Met211 and Leu469 were shown to be key residues for substrate specificity. The native structures of sAOC3 and the mutational data presented in this study will aid the design of hAOC3 specific inhibitors.  相似文献

We report the isolation of the second member, kin2, of a family of two cold-inducible genes of Arabidopsis thaliana. The proteins corresponding to the two genes have similarities to the small antifreeze proteins from Winter flounder. Kin1 and kin2 are organized in a close tandem array in the genome of a. thaliana. Both have three exons separated by introns with approximately the same length and location. The coding regions are highly conserved while the introns and especially the 3 flanking sequences of the mRNAs have diverged. The kin1 and kin2 genes are coordinately regulated in the cold. Unlike kin1, the kin2 mRNA has a detectable basal level, and accumulates to a higher level during acclimation. Both mRNAs are induced by 10 M ABA but only kin2 responds strongly to drought and salinity stresses.  相似文献

Failure to develop complete dentition, tooth agenesis, is a common developmental anomaly manifested most often as isolated but also as associated with many developmental syndromes. It typically affects third molars or one or few other permanent teeth but severe agenesis is also relatively prevalent. Here we report mutational analyses of seven candidate genes in a cohort of 127 probands with non-syndromic tooth agenesis. 82 lacked more than five permanent teeth excluding third molars, called as oligodontia. We identified 28 mutations, 17 of which were novel. Together with our previous reports, we have identified two mutations in MSX1, AXIN2 and EDARADD, five in PAX9, four in EDA and EDAR, and nine in WNT10A. They were observed in 58 probands (44%), with a mean number of missing teeth of 11.7 (range 4 to 34). Almost all of these probands had severe agenesis. Only few of the probands but several relatives with heterozygous genotypes of WNT10A or EDAR conformed to the common type of non-syndromic tooth agenesis, incisor-premolar hypodontia. Mutations in MSX1 and PAX9 affected predominantly posterior teeth, whereas both deciduous and permanent incisors were especially sensitive to mutations in EDA and EDAR. Many mutations in EDAR, EDARADD and WNT10A were present in several families. Biallelic or heterozygous genotypes of WNT10A were observed in 32 and hemizygous or heterozygous genotypes of EDA, EDAR or EDARADD in 22 probands. An EDARADD variant were in seven probands present together with variants in EDAR or WNT10A, suggesting combined phenotypic effects of alleles in distinct genes.  相似文献
