The experiment reported here investigates the perception of orientation of color photographic images. A collection of 1000 images (mix of professional photos and consumer snapshots) was used in this study. Each image was examined by at least five observers and shown at varying resolutions. At each resolution, observers were asked to indicate the image orientation, the level of confidence, and the cues they used to make the decision. The results show that for typical images, accuracy is close to 98% when using all available semantic cues from high-resolution images, and 84% when using only low-level vision features and coarse semantics from thumbnails. The accuracy by human observers suggests an upper bound for the performance of an automatic system. In addition, the use of a large, carefully chosen image set that spans the 'photo space' (in terms of occasions and subject matter) and extensive interaction with the human observers reveals cues used by humans at various image resolutions: sky and people are the most useful and reliable among a number of important semantic cues. 相似文献

Squalene produced under anaerobic conditions, by a strain of Torulaspora delbrueckii was extracted from the biomass using supercritical carbon dioxide. Minimum use of solvent, lower time of isolation and a higher selectivity of extraction merit use of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) technique over solvent extraction of squalene, as optimized and reported previously. A maximum squalene yield of 11.12 g g–1 (dry weight) of yeast cells was obtained at a temperature of 60 °C and pressure of 250–255 bar at a constant flow rate of 0.2l min–1 of carbon dioxide. Lyophilization prior to SFE increased the squalene yield to 430.52 g g–1 dry weight of yeast cells, an amount that is far greater than that obtained by (2:1) chloroform–methanol solvent extraction. 相似文献

In wheat seedlings (Triticum aestivum L. cv. 2329) oxidative stress caused by UV-B radiation led to lipid peroxidation of
thylakoid membrane; it was expressed in term of malondialdehyde (MDA) formation. The peroxidation of lipids of thylakoid membrane
in isolated chloroplasts was prevented when flavonoids quercetin and rutin were supplied into the incubation medium. The activities
of superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and catalase increased during the first hours of UV-B exposure. A comparative
study of UV-B and temperature effects showed different profiles of the antioxidant enzymes and MDA, suggesting that these
two stresses have distinct sites of action. In addition to quantitative increase in flavonoids, qualitative change in flavonoid
composition was also marked during UV-B stress, and a new peak at 330 nm was found as compared to control.

A wide-ranging examination of plastid (pt)DNA sequence homologies within
higher plant nuclear genomes (promiscuous DNA) was undertaken. Digestion
with methylation-sensitive restriction enzymes and Southern analysis was
used to distinguish plastid and nuclear DNA in order to assess the extent
of variability of promiscuous sequences within and between plant species.
Some species, such as Gossypium hirsutum (cotton), Nicotiana tabacum
(tobacco), and Chenopodium quinoa, showed homogenity of these sequences,
while intraspecific sequence variation was observed among different
cultivars of Pisum sativum (pea), Hordeum vulgare (barley), and Triticum
aestivum (wheat). Hypervariability of plastid sequence homologies was
identified in the nuclear genomes of Spinacea oleracea (spinach) and Beta
vulgaris (beet), in which individual plants were shown to possess a unique
spectrum of nuclear sequences with ptDNA homology. This hypervariability
apparently extended to somatic variation in B. vulgaris. No sequences with
ptDNA homology were identified by this method in the nuclear genome of
Arabidopsis thaliana.

A survey was conducted to determine the levels of fumonisins B1 and B2 in corn and corn-based products available in Colombia
for human and animal consumption. A total of 120 samples were analyzed by acetonitrile-water extraction, cleanup with a strong-anion-exchange
column, and liquid chromatography with o-phthaldialdehyde-2-mercaptoethanol derivatization and fluorescence detection. The
samples of corn and corn-based products for animal intake were taken at different feed manufacturing plants, whereas the samples
used for human foods where purchased from local retail stores. The number of positive samples for fumonisin B1 was 20.0% higher
in corn and corn-based products for animal intake (75.0%) than in corn and corn-based products for human consumption (55.0%).
The levels of fumonisin B1 were also higher in corn and corn-based products for animal intake (mean = 694 μg/kg; range = 32–2964
μg/kg), than in corn and corn-based products for human intake (mean = 218 μg/kg; range = 24–2170 μg/ kg). The incidence and
levels of fumonisin B2 were lower than those for fumonisin B1. Corn and corn-based products for animal consumption had an
incidence of fumonisin B2 of 58.3%, with a mean value of 283 μg/kg, and a range of 44–987 μg/kg. The incidence of fumonisin
B2 in corn-based products for human intake was 35.0%, with a mean value of 118 μg/kg and a range of 21–833 μg/kg. The highest
incidence and levels of fumonisins were found in samples of hominy feed, with concentrations ranging from 86 to 2964 μg/kg
fumonisin B1 and 57 to 987 μg/kg fumonisin B2. 相似文献

Ras proteins regulate a wide range of biological processes by interacting with a variety of effector proteins. In addition to the known role in tumorigensis, the activated form of Ras exhibits growth-inhibitory effects by unknown mechanisms. Several Ras effector proteins identified as mediators of apoptosis and cell-cycle arrest also exhibit properties normally associated with tumor suppressor proteins. Here, we show that Ras effector RASSF5/NORE-1 binds strongly to K-Ras but weakly to both N-Ras and H-Ras. RASSF5 was found to localize both in the nucleus and the nucleolus in contrast to other Ras effector proteins, RASSF1C and RASSF2, which are localized in the nucleus and excluded from nucleolus. A 50 amino acid residue transferable arginine-rich nucleolar localization signal (NoLS) identified in RASSF5 is capable of interacting with importin-beta and transporting the cargo into the nucleolus. Surprisingly, similar arginine-rich signals identified in RASSF1C and RASSF2 interact with importin-alpha and transport the heterologous cytoplasmic proteins to the nucleus. Interestingly, mutation of arginine residues within these nuclear targeting signals prevented interaction of Ras effector proteins with respective transport receptors and abolished their nuclear translocation. These results provide evidence for the first time that arginine-rich signals are able to recognize different nuclear import receptors and transport the RASSF proteins into distinct sub-cellular compartments. In addition, our data suggest that the nuclear localization of RASSF5 is critical for its cell growth control activity. Together, these data suggest that the transport of Ras effector superfamily proteins into the nucleus/nucleolus may play a vital role in modulating Ras-mediated cell proliferation during tumorigenesis. 相似文献

Effect of methyl carbonate pesticide, carbonyl, was studied on macrophage functions, lymphocyte proliferation and delayed type hypersensitivity response. Sixteen adult chicken, vaccinated against Newcaslte disease, were procured and randomly divided in two experimental groups. Chicken of group I served as control, while group II birds were given carbaryl at 20 ppm (No observable effect level, NOEL) in feed for 3 months. To measure the functional activity of phagocytic cells, nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction test was performed on peripheral blood leucocytes. Concanvalin A (Con-A) and lipopolysaccharide stimulated proliferation of T and B lymphocytes was assessed using MTT dye method. At the end of experiment, the phagocytic capacities of macrophages were significantly reduced in carbaryl treated group. Lymphocyte proliferation responses to Con-A and LPS were (23 and 28%, respectively lower) in chicken fed with carbaryl. Delayed hypersensitivity reaction to tuberculin was reduced to 77% of control values indicating inhibition of cell mediated immune response.
