Objective

We aimed to investigate whether there is an association between male pattern baldness and angiographic coronary artery disease (CAD) severity and collateral development, which has not been reported previously.

Methods

Coronary arteriograms, CAD risk factors, lipid parameters and presence and severity of baldness in 511 male patients were prospectively evaluated. Baldness was classified into five groups. Severity of CAD was evaluated with the Gensini scoring system and collateral development with Rentrop scores.

Results

Although subjects with a higher Gensini score had more frequent and severe baldness, they were older than the group with lower Gensini scores. Bald patients had a higher Gensini score when compared with their non-bald counterparts. In univariate analysis, age more than 60, body mass index more than 30, smoking and baldness were predictors of high Gensini scores. In multivariate analysis, only age more than 60, body mass index more than 30 and smoking were independent predictors of a high Gensini score. There were no differences in terms of presence and severity of baldness in subjects with and without adequate collateral development.

Conclusions

There was no relation between presence, severity and age of occurrence of male pattern baldness and Gensini and Rentrop scores, which are important measures of presence and severity of CAD.  相似文献

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a genetic disorder with acute inflammatory serosal attacks due to MEFV gene mutations which resides in chromosome 16. Lack of a C5a inhibitor activity in the peritoneum has previously been proposed in part to contribute in propagation of the serosal inflammation in FMF attacks. The aim of this study is to investigate C5a receptor (C5aR) gene polymorphism in patients with FMF and its relation to the main features of the disease. A polymorphism in the coding region of C5aR gene leading to C to T transition at nucleotide position 450 has been investigated in 85 non-related Turkish FMF patients and 160 non-related healthy controls by using PCR-RFLP. The frequencies of C5aR gene 450 CT genotype and T allele were not significantly different between Turkish FMF patients and healthy subjects (14.12 and 8.24% for FMF vs. 10 and 5% for controls, respectively). C5aR gene 450 CT genotype tended to associate with the presence Henoch-Schonlein purpura (OR: 1.25, 95% CI: 0.917–1.704, P = 0.017) but with no other clinical findings of the disease. C5aR polymorphism might be searched in populations having high prevalence of FMF.  相似文献

Summary: Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains exhibit significant variability in pathogenicity and ecological flexibility. Such interstrain differences reflect the dynamic nature of the P. aeruginosa genome, which is composed of a relatively invariable “core genome” and a highly variable “accessory genome.” Here we review the major classes of genetic elements comprising the P. aeruginosa accessory genome and highlight emerging themes in the acquisition and functional importance of these elements. Although the precise phenotypes endowed by the majority of the P. aeruginosa accessory genome have yet to be determined, rapid progress is being made, and a clearer understanding of the role of the P. aeruginosa accessory genome in ecology and infection is emerging.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to clarify the effects of high dietary supplementation with boric acid and borax, called boron (B) compounds, on lipid peroxidation (LPO), antioxidant activity, some vitamin levels, and DNA damage in rats. Thirty Sprague Dawley male rats were divided into three equal groups: the animals in the first group (control) were fed with a standard rodent diet containing 6.4 mg B/kg, and the animals in the experimental group were fed with a standard rodent diet added with a supra-nutritional amount of boric acid and borax (100 mg B/kg) throughout the experimental period of 28 days. The B compounds decreased malondialdehyde (MDA), DNA damage, the protein carbonyl content (PCO) level in blood, and glutathione (GSH) concentration in the liver, Cu–Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activity in the kidney. The B compounds increased GSH concentration in blood and the vitamin C level in plasma. Consequently, our results demonstrate that B supplementation (100 mg/kg) in diet decreases LPO, and enhances the antioxidant defense mechanism and vitamin status. There are no differences in oxidant/antioxidant balance and biochemical parameters except for serum vitamin A and liver GSH concentration, between the boron compounds used in this study.  相似文献

Glutathione reductase [GR, E.C.1.8.1.7] catalyses NADPH dependent reduction of glutathione disulfide (GSSG) to reduced glutathione (GSH). Thus, it is the crucial enzyme to maintain high [GSH]/[GSSG] ratio and physiological redox status in cells. Kidney and liver tissues were considered as a rich source of GR. In this study, rat kidney GR was purified and some of its properties were investigated. The enzyme was purified 2,356 fold with a yield of 16% by using heat-denaturation and Sephadex G25 gel filtration, 2′,5′-ADP Agarose 4B, PBE94 column chromatographies. The purified enzyme had a specific activity (Vm) of 250 U/mg protein and the ratio of absorbances at wavelengths of A 273/A 463, A 280/A 460, A 365/A 460, and A 379/A 463, were 7.1, 6.8, 1.2 and 1.0, respectively. Each mol of GR subunit bound 0.97 mol of FAD. NADH was used as a coenzyme by rat kidney GR but with a lower efficiency (32.7%) than NADPH. Its subunit molecular weight was estimated as 53 kDa. An optimum pH of 6.5 and optimum temperature of 65 °C were found for rat kidney GR. Its activation energy (Ea) and temperature coefficient (Q10) were calculated as 7.02 kcal/mol and 1.42, respectively. The Km(NADPH) and kcat/Km (NADPH) values were found to be 15.3 ± 1.4 μM and 1.68 × 107 M−1 s−1 for the concentration range of 10-200 μM NADPH and when GSSG is the variable substrate, the Km(GSSG) and the kcat/Km(GSSG) values of 53.1 ± 3.4 μM and 4.85 × 106 M−1 s−1 were calculated for the concentration range of 20–1,200 μM GSSG.  相似文献

Background  

Polysomnography (PSG) is used to define physiological sleep and different physiological sleep stages, to assess sleep quality and diagnose many types of sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea. However, PSG requires not only the connection of various sensors and electrodes to the subject but also spending the night in a bed that is different from the subject's own bed. This study is designed to investigate the feasibility of automatic classification of sleep stages and obstructive apneaic epochs using only the features derived from a single-lead electrocardiography (ECG) signal.  相似文献

Magnetic poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate-N-methacryloyl-(L)-histidine methyl ester) [mag-poly(EGDMA-MAH) beads, 50-100 microm in diameter, were produced by suspension polymerization for affinity depletion of immunoglobulin G (IgG) from human serum. Cu2+ ions were complexed directly via MAH groups (Cu2+ loading: 4.1 micromol/g). IgG depletion studies were performed by magnetically stabilized fluidized bed column. Acetate, Tris-HCl, MES and phosphate buffers all allow adsorption of similar quantities of IgG (27.3-45.6 mg/g). MOPS and HEPES allow higher adsorption quantities (79.6 mg/g and 74.1mg/g, respectively). Maximum adsorption capacities in MOPS buffer were 46.8 mg/g for mag-poly(EGDMA-MAH) and 102.1mg/g for Cu2+ chelated mag-poly(EGDMA-MAH) beads. The adsorption capacity decreased drastically from 102.1mg/g to 30.7 mg/g with the increase of the flow rate from 0.2 ml/min to 3.5 ml/min. The elution studies were performed by 1.0M NaCl. The elution results demonstrated that the adsorption of IgG to the adsorbent was reversible. To test the efficiency of IgG depletion from human serum, proteins in the serum and eluted portion were analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. The depletion efficiency for IgG was above 99.4%. Eluted proteins include mainly IgG, and a small number of non-albumin proteins such as apo-lipoprotein A1, sero-transferrin, haptoglobulin and alpha1-antitrypsin. When anti-HSA-sepharose adsorbent is used together with our metal-chelated mag-beads, IgG and HSA can be depleted in a single step.  相似文献

Biometrical studies on ancient skeletal series and comparison with modern people by using radiological methods are quite limited in Turkey. Previous studies showed that measurements obtained from orthopantomographs are highly correlated with the actual size of the bones. The aim of the present study is to determine the possible change in gonial angle over time in ancient Anatolian populations with the present. Also an aim was attempted to demonstrate the symmetry of the gonial angle in the jaws and the sexual dimorphism. Gonial angle values (right and left) were taken from 267 Turkish adults with no craniomandibular disorders, orthodontic history or treatment by using panoramic radiographs. Data of the past populations were collected from previous studies. Comparison between right and left sides and the sexual differences were tested by paired student t-test and discriminant analyses were conducted. The results showed that there were no significant differences between the right and left gonial angles of the individuals but there was a significant difference at the left gonial angle between sexes (p < 0.01). Furthermore, no statistically significant difference was found for the gonial angle between the selected past populations with the present sample.  相似文献
