The correct use of taxonomic names must become widespread if a clear understanding of primate paleontology is to exist among anthropologists. Physical anthropologists are urged to acquire genuine competence in the paleontology, systematics, and taxonomy of mammals. Examples are given of improper taxonomic procedure and of the perpetuation of invalid names. The need for a stable and correct nomenclature of the primates is emphasized. The importance of examining actual fossil specimens is stressed. The taxonomy of the Hominoidea is discussed and a summary of invalid names in current use is given. Recently discovered fossils from Oligocene strata in the Egyptian Fayum are figured and the pertinence of these to the origins of higher primates is suggested.  相似文献

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is an inflammatory cytokine that exerts protective effects during myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury. We hypothesized that elevated MIF levels in the early postoperative time course might be inversely associated with postoperative organ dysfunction as assessed by the simplified acute physiology score (SAPS) II and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score in patients after cardiac surgery. A total of 52 cardiac surgical patients (mean age [± SD] 67 ± 10 years; EuroScore: 7) were enrolled in this monocenter, prospective observational study. Serum levels of MIF and clinical data were obtained after induction of anesthesia, at admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), 4 h after admission and at the first and second postoperative day. To characterize the magnitude of MIF release, we compared blood levels of samples from cardiac surgical patients with those obtained from healthy volunteers. We assessed patient outcomes using the SAPS II at postoperative d 1 and SOFA score for the first 3 d of the eventual ICU stay. Compared to healthy volunteers, patients had already exhibited elevated MIF levels prior to surgery (64 ± 50 versus 13 ± 17 ng/mL; p < 0.05). At admission to the ICU, MIF levels reached peak values (107 ± 95 ng/mL; p < 0.01 versus baseline) that decreased throughout the observation period and had already reached preoperative values 4 h later. Postoperative MIF values were inversely correlated with SAPS II and SOFA scores during the early postoperative stay. Moreover, MIF values on postoperative d 1 were related to the calculated cardiac power index (r = 0.420, p < 0.05). Elevated postoperative MIF levels are inversely correlated with organ dysfunction in patients after cardiac surgery.  相似文献

Three series of azole piperazine derivatives that mimic dicyclotyrosine (cYY), the natural substrate of the essential Mycobacterium tuberculosis cytochrome P450 CYP121A1, were prepared and evaluated for binding affinity and inhibitory activity (MIC) against M. tuberculosis. Series A replaces one phenol group of cYY with a C3-imidazole moiety, series B includes a keto group on the hydrocarbon chain preceding the series A imidazole, whilst series C explores replacing the keto group of the piperidone ring of cYY with a CH2-imidazole or CH2-triazole moiety to enhance binding interaction with the heme of CYP121A1. The series displayed moderate to weak type II binding affinity for CYP121A1, with the exception of series B 10a, which displayed mixed type I binding. Of the three series, series C imidazole derivatives showed the best, although modest, inhibitory activity against M. tuberculosis (17d MIC?=?12.5?μg/mL, 17a 50?μg/mL). Crystal structures were determined for CYP121A1 bound to series A compounds 6a and 6b that show the imidazole groups positioned directly above the haem iron with binding between the haem iron and imidazole nitrogen of both compounds at a distance of 2.2?Å. A model generated from a 1.5?Å crystal structure of CYP121A1 in complex with compound 10a showed different binding modes in agreement with the heterogeneous binding observed. Although the crystal structures of 6a and 6b would indicate binding with CYP121A1, the binding assays themselves did not allow confirmation of CYP121A1 as the target.  相似文献

The Key Largo woodrat (Neotoma floridana smalli) and Key Largo cotton mouse (Peromyscus gossypinus allapaticola) are federally endangered subspecies endemic to the tropical hardwood hammocks of Key Largo, Florida. Woodrats are considered generalists in habitat and diet, yet a steady decline in natural stick nests and capture rates over the past several decades suggests that they are limited by the availability of nesting habitat due to habitat loss and fragmentation. The more specialized Key Largo cotton mouse appears to rely on old growth hammock, a habitat type that is rare following past land clearing. In 2004, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service started building supplemental nest structures to restore habitat quality and connectivity for these endangered rodents, but nest use requires evaluation. We used camera traps and occupancy models to evaluate the factors influencing woodrat and cotton mouse use of the supplemental nests. We detected woodrats at 65 and cotton mice at 175 of 284 sampled nest structures, with co‐occurrence at 38 nests. Woodrat nest use followed a gradient from low nest use in the north to high nest use in the south, which might relate to the proximity of free‐ranging domestic cat (Felis catus) colonies in residential developments. Cotton mouse nest use, however, was related positively to mature hammock and related negatively to disturbed areas (e.g. scarified lands). The two species occurred independently of each other. Stick‐stacking behavior was observed at supplemental nests and, although it was correlated with detection of woodrats, it was not a strong predictor of their occurrence. We suggest that nest supplementation can be an important tool for species recovery as habitat quality continues to improve with succession.  相似文献

Aquaporin 2 (AQP2) is a small, integral tetrameric plasma membrane protein that is expressed in mammalian kidneys. The specific constitution of this protein and its selective permeability to water means that AQP2 plays an important role in hypertonic urine production. Immunolocalization of AQP2 has been studied in humans, monkeys, sheep, dogs, rabbits, rats, mice and adult cattle. We analyzed the expression of AQP2 in kidneys of 7-month-old Polish-Friesian var. black and white male calves. AQP2 was localized in the principal cells of collecting ducts in medullary rays penetrating the renal cortex and in the collecting ducts of renal medulla. AQP2 was expressed most strongly in the apical plasma membrane, but expression was observed also in the intracellular vesicles and basolateral plasma membrane. Our study provides new information concerning the immunolocalization of AQP2 in calf kidneys.  相似文献

Recent studies have demonstrated that the cytoplasmic tail of syndecan-4, a widely expressed transmembrane proteoglycan, can activate protein kinase Calpha in vitro, in combination with phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate (PI-4,5-P(2)). Syndecan-4 is involved in growth factor binding as well as in adhesion to extracellular matrix proteins, while PI-4,5-P(2) synthesis is modulated by growth factor and adhesion-generated signaling. The cooperative activation of PKCalpha by the proteoglycan and the phosphatidylinositol may constitute, therefore, an essential part of the cell's response to these extracellular signals. To characterize the activation mechanism of PKCalpha, we addressed here the nature of the interplay between syndecan-4, PI-4,5-P(2), and PKCalpha by measuring their mutual binding affinities and the specificity of their interactions. We found that the cytoplasmic tail of syndecan-4 is unlikely to bind directly to PKCalpha, and that this interaction critically depends on PI-4,5-P(2). The PI-4,5-P(2) specificity of the activation of PKCalpha is conferred by the cytoplasmic tail of syndecan-4, which has higher binding affinity for this phosphatidylinositol over phosphatidylinositol-3,4-bisphosphate and the -3,4,5-trisphospate. The activation is specific to PKCalpha and does not encompass the novel protein kinase C delta isoenzyme.  相似文献

Plethodon cinereus, the red-backed salamander, is a small territorial vertebrate that defends refugia located on the forest floor. As a component of territorial defense, these animals use scent marks to advertise their refugia. Behavioral evidence indicates that scent marks are produced by the postcloacal glands located on the ventral surface of the tail just posterior to the cloaca. We placed animals on unmarked substrates and recorded changes in serous acini from the postcloacal and shoulder region over a 48-h period. Within the first hour there was an increase in the number of acini filled with secretory product in the postcloacal region. At 12 h the number of full acini decreased and the number of empty acini increased. By 24 h the number of empty acini had decreased and the number of renewing acini containing secretory cells producing product had increased. By 48 h the ratio of full to empty to renewing acini was similar to those observed at the start of the study. In the shoulder region, no significant changes in the ratio of full to empty to renewing acini were observed. Observations of the serous acini within the postcloacal region and the shoulder region indicate that the mode of secretory production is holocrine. These findings are additional evidence that the postcloacal glands are the site of scent mark production.  相似文献

Age and size at reproduction are important components of fitness, and are variable both within and among angiosperm species. The fitness consequences of such life-history variation are most readily studied in organisms that reproduce only once in their lifetime. The timing of the onset of reproduction (bolting) in the monocarpic perennial, Lobelia inflata, occurs over a range of dates within a season, and may be postponed to a later year. Empirical relationships among life-history traits, derived from over 950 wild-growing and experimentally manipulated plants in the field, are used to model an optimal changing size threshold (norm of reaction) for bolting over the growing season. Comparisons are made between observed and expected norms of reaction governing bolting. An apparently suboptimal bolting schedule that precludes bolting beyond an early (conservative) date is observed, and is found to be qualitatively consistent with conservative bet hedging under unpredictable season lengths. On this basis we propose the schedule of bolting as a plausible example of a conservative bet-hedging strategy. The results underscore the critical need for long-term studies of fluctuating selection to distinguish suboptimality from bet hedging.  相似文献

The effect of oral capsaicin on taste sensations in humans was reinvestigated with attention to methodological issues raised in previous studies, including the mode of presentation and temperature of the tastant stimulus, as well as the sensitizing and desensitizing properties of capsaicin. One-half of the dorsal anterior tongue was pre-treated with capsaicin, followed by bilateral tastant application (sucrose, NaCl, quinine, monosodium glutamate and citric acid). Subjects indicated on which side the taste intensity was greater in a two-alternative, forced-choice procedure and also rated taste intensity independently on each side of the tongue. Each of the five tastants was tested sequentially, with reapplication of capsaicin between trials in order to maintain a constant level of burn. Four experiments were conducted: (i) a high concentration (33 p.p.m.) (109 microM) capsaicin effect on taste intensity elicited by high tastant concentrations; (ii) a high concentration capsaicin effect on taste intensity elicited by low tastant concentrations; (iii) a low concentration (1.5 p.p.m.) (4.9 microM) capsaicin effect on taste intensity elicited by low tastant concentrations; and (iv) validation of the method for localizing taste by pre-treating one side of the tongue with Gymnema sylvestre, followed by bilateral application of sucrose. In the first experiment, a significant proportion of the subjects chose the non-treated side in the two-alternative, forced-choice procedure and assigned significantly higher ratings to that side for sucrose-induced sweetness, quinine-induced bitterness and glutamate-induced umami sensations. Salty and sour sensations were not different between sides. A 15 min break was imposed in order to allow the capsaicin burn to disappear and desensitization to set in, followed by reapplication of the tastant test solutions. There were no bilateral differences in the intensity of the sensations elicited by any of the five tastants. Similar results were obtained in experiments 2 and 3. In the fourth experiment, all 15 subjects tested chose the side not treated with Gymnema sylvestre as having a stronger sweet taste and assigned significantly higher ratings to that side, thereby validating the method for taste localization. These results indicate that oral capsaicin reduces certain but not all taste sensations and are discussed in terms of possible physiological and cognitive interactions.  相似文献
